2013 Holt County 4-H Leader Update Monday, March 25 —7:00‐9:00 p.m.  Holt County Annex 

This update is for all 4‐H leaders to learn what’s new for the 2013 4‐H year.  A endance by all leaders at this mee ng is highly recommended.  Topics covered will include: Club Ac vity Ideas, Fairbook Update, New 4‐H Policy, 4‐H Technology Update, New Fair Program and 2013 Workshops planned.

Clover Kids News Any Clover Kids wishing to receive a free rabbit can contact Jackie Meyer at 402‐340‐5877.    Clover Kids wishing to receive a free chick can contact Leo Vandersnick at 402‐340‐9255.  A er the fair you may have the op on to keep the chicken or return it to Leo. 

Holt County 4-H Trash Can Challenge This year the Holt County Fairgrounds will receive new plastic trash cans. Each club will be allowed to decorate these trash cans. The plastic trash cans can be painted in any way to promote 4-H. Clubs will need to use a special plastic paint. Call the Extension Office for details about the paint. We suggest you pick from the following 4-H program areas: 4-H Agricultural Literacy: Ensure that Nebraska’s youth have a knowledge and appreciation of where their food coms from. 4-H Career Development: Prepare youth to make informed decisions about their college career path. 4-H Citizenship/Leadership: Foster youth’s commitment to their communities and growing future leaders. 4-H Healthy Living: Educate youth about how to make healthy and safe decisions in their daily lives 4-H Science: Developing science interests, skills and abilities in the areas of agriculture, energy, environmental stewardship and technology. Don’t forget—this makes an excellent community service project!!! The trash cans will be judged at the fair. The winning club will receive a $100 grant donated by the Holt County 4-H Foundation!!! March is Bake and Take Month March is Bake and Take month. The purpose of Bake and Take is to promote community 

awareness and wheat educa on by baking a wheat food item and sharing it with someone 

else.  Bake and Take can be celebrated any me during the month. If you have any ques‐

ons, or would like to request recipe brochures and s ckers for your event, please feel free

The Interview Judging Contest is a NEW opportunity, for young people to prac ce real‐life career prepara on skills. This program is created in partnership with Trusted Choice Insurance. The contest involves a set of fic ous job descrip ons that the members use to prepare for the process of          applying and interviewing for a posi on.    A Regional Interview Judging Contest will be held along with the Regional Public Speaking Contest on May 23rd held at the Lifelong Learning Center   Prior to the contest, contestants will submit a cover le er and résumé wri en for one of three job descrip ons: Veterinary Assistant, 4‐H Camp Counselor, or Poli cal Intern. On the day of the contest, par cipants will complete a wri en job applica on and an interview. Youth are encouraged to high‐light their 4‐H experience in all aspects of the contest. 4‐H members age 10 and older by January 1, 2013 are eligible to enter this contest. Winners of the Regional contests will advance to State Fair where they will each receive $50. Registra on material, rules, and contest resources can be found at: http://4h.unl.eduinterviewjudgingcontest

Are you ready for the next step in clothing and design?  

Let the rich beauty of nature at the Nebraska State 4‐H Camp inspire you to design and create an original garment and fabric accessory. Learn new fabric design techniques and how to manipulate a simple pa ern to create a unique ou it. 

4‐H Design Camp will be held May 22 & 23 at the Nebraska State 4‐H Camp at Halsey. The $65.00 fee includes fabric, dyes, pa ern, meals and cabin. Sessions will begin at 9:00 a.m. CDT Wednesday the 22nd. The runway show for camp par cipants and their families will be held at 3:00 p.m. CDT on Thursday the 23rd.  

Par cipants must have sewn at least one garment in Clothing Level 1 to be ready to par‐cipate in this camp. Camp brochures including registra ons can be found at: 4‐H Design Camp Registra on

Each summer, over 500 4‐H'ers convene at the University of Nebraska‐Lincoln East Campus to test their skills in animal science and family and consumer sciences during PASE (Premier Animal Science Events) and Life Challenge. Teens compete in a variety of different contests including: livestock, meats and poultry judging, livestock skillathon, livestock quiz bowl, life challenges and clover challenge. While on campus, young people have the opportunity to take part in faculty‐led workshops, campus tours, and special sessions by UNL recruiters. Visit: PASE/Life Challenge Contact the Extension the Office for more informa on. Events will be held July 1‐2, 2013.  Entries begin: May 17 through June 14, 2013.
