It’s hard to believe that we are in the Lenten season, having to try and set our minds and hearts on the main goal, which is conversion. “The entire Christian life,” said St. Augustine, “is an exercise of holy desire.” As we receive the ashes on our foreheads, we remember the purpose of Lent: it is an exercise in cleansing
and holy desire, helped by some penitential practices: prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
This can only be meaningful if it is seen as a way to open our heart to God and others, to share in the suffering with those who are starving and to save money to give to the poor. I am going to address “fasting”. I find there needs to be some clarification of this. In the Roman Rite, including Canada, we have two days of fasting and abstinence from meat: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Some people keep this tradition of fasting until Holy Saturday’s Easter Vigil. Also, Fridays are days of abstinence from meat, but Catholics may substitute special acts of charity or piety on this day. All Catholics, from the ages of 18 to 59 are obliged to fast and the law of abstinence from meat pertains to those 14 and older.
I wish you all the strength and vision to unclutter your life from whatever keeps you away from God.
