Dear Parishioners, I am glad that another month has come.

I wish all of you happy month. Let's prepare to celebrate

the Valentine's Day with great affection for one another.

God gave us the greatest Valentine gift with His Son, Jesus

Christ. Carefully calculate John 3:16 and you will see that

the word Valentine is hidden in there.

Our construction is becoming a reality very soon. I thank

the workers under Jackson Construction and all those who

are sacrificing their time, talents and money to help us

finish our Church construction.

May God bless you all. We are waiting for the day to put

the steeple on our Church building and as soon as the time

is available I will notify you all, so that you can be part of

it. Until then stay tuned for all updates. God bless you all.

Viva il Papa (Long Live the Pope)

Pope Francis (the first pope out of 266 Supreme Pontiffs in the history of the Church to

choose the name Francis) was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on

December 17, 1936. After his studies in the novitiate and seminary, he was ordained as

a Jesuit priest in 1960. He was ordained bishop in 1998 and was elevated to cardinal by

Pope John Paul II in 2001. Following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI (who had suc-

ceeded JP II) on February 28, 2013, a papal conclave elected Bergoglio as his successor

on March 13, 2013.

The new pope chose Francis as his papal name in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of the environment

and animals, and advocate for the poor and impoverished. This choice reflects the pope’s commitment to

protecting the environment, speaking against consumerism, and trying to eliminate poverty through direct

pastoral work.

Francis is the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere, and the

first pope from outside Europe since Gregory III, who reigned in the 8th century. A lot of firsts!

In his apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudiam (News of Joy), Pope Francis declared: “I prefer a Church which is

bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from

being confined and from clinging to its own security.”

And in recognition of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit Order, Francis said in one of his meditations:

“I am thinking of what Saint Ignatius told us . . . he pointed out two criteria on love. The first: Love is expressed

more clearly in actions than in words. The second: There is greater love in giving than in receiving.”

Ash Wednesday Is Coming

Ash Wednesday is early this year (February 26th). The tradition of donning ashes as a sign of repentance actually

predates Jesus. There are signs of ashes in the Books of Esther, Samuel, Isaiah, Job and Jeremiah. In our Catho-

lic tradition, we receive ashes on our foreheads as a symbol of repentance on Ash Wednesday, which begins the

Lenten season. Lent is 40 days (excluding Sundays) to repent, fast, reflect, and prepare to celebrate Jesus’ Res-

urrection on Easter Sunday. This time also represents the 40-day period when Jesus fasted in the desert and

was tempted by Satan. We set the time aside during Lent to focus on Christ’s life, sacrifice, ministry and Resur-

rection.

Some people traditionally “give up” something for Lent (candy, movies, etc.) but a more significant opportunity

exists to “do something” different or special during Lent as a way of showing our love

toward Jesus and toward one another (alms giving, praying, etc.).

The Church also asks us to preserve the tradition of abstaining from meat on Ash

Wednesday and on Fridays during Lent and also fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good

Friday. Every person 14 years of age and older - unless excused for health reasons -

abstains from meat (chicken, cattle, sheep, pigs) and items made with meat (but not

liquids such as broth, gravies or sauces or foods such as butter, cheese and eggs). Fish

and shellfish are always permitted. Fasting on the two specified days applies to those

between 18 and 59 (again with exclusions for health reasons), and implies just one full

meal with two smaller meals that do not equal a full meal.

February 14th Quiz Answer

Valentine’s Day is indeed also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine. So who was Valentine

in the history of the Church? Valentinus (from the Latin "valens", meaning to be strong and in good health) was a

common name in ancient Roman times, so there are various candidates for this saint. Here are a couple of

martyrdom stories associated with various people named Valentinus prior to the year CE 500 in and around

Rome:

Valentine of Rome. One legend says that in CE 269, this Roman convert to Christianity refused

the Roman Emperor’s demand that he convert back to paganism. Because he ministered to Chris-

tians, he was put in prison where, while waiting for execution, he

restored sight to the blind daughter of his jailer and gave her a note signed “From your Valentine”

as a farewell before his execution, which occurred on February 14 that year.

Saint Valentine. This version says that Valentine was a Roman priest who performed weddings for

soldiers who were forbidden by the emperor to marry. The emperor’s edict decreed that married

soldiers did not make good warriors and thus the young men could not marry. Valentine, accord-

ing to legend, wore a ring with a Cupid on it - a Roman symbol of love - that helped soldiers recog-

nize him, and he secretly would perform marriage ceremonies for soldiers. He was caught doing

this and beaten to death with clubs on February 14th around the year CE 270 for disobeying the

emperor, Claudius II.

Valentino of Terni. This Valentinus was a physician and the first bishop of Terni, a city about 60

miles northeast of Rome. He too suffered martyrdom on February 14, CE 273, for proselytizing during the perse-

cution of Christians by Caludius Gothicus. His relics were buried under a basilica in Terni which was built by Pope

Julius I.

Why is Valentine considered a saint? Whether a single story or an amalgam of similar stories,

Valentinus was declared a saint by the Church as a martyr to the faith as each of three sto-

ries above illustrate. Sainthood is a statement of the Church that it is “worthy of belief” that

the person is in Heaven and saved due to giving their life voluntarily for belief in Jesus as

Savior and Son of God.

Whether Valentine performed a miracle of eyesight, married soldiers who were otherwise

forbidden, or spread the word of the love of Jesus - or all three - Valentinus was a person of

love. So in honor of his love, Happy St. Valentine’s Day on February 14th.

Open to all Holy Family members and friends: The Knights of Columbus is sponsoring another

casino trip on Saturday, February 29th, to Jackson Rancheria and Harrah’s Casino (Ione).

Meet in Holy Family parking lot at 7:30. $35 per person with “casino cash” given back at the

two sites. Proceeds go to Knights of Columbus Council 15750 and the Holy Family

Construction Fund. [The last casino trip plus the Christmas Ornament project raised $500 for

Also, the Knights are hosting a Hawaiian Dinner-Dance party on Saturday, May 9th, from 4:00 to 10:00 pm at the

Community Gym (100 Benton Way). Tickets will be $40 per person with proceeds benefiting Council 15750 and

Recycling: Continue to drop off recycling cans and bottles at the church office. Please

remove caps, liquids, and foreign objects from all bottles and place loose caps in same bag with

bottles. All proceeds from recycling go directly to the Construction Fund. The last turn-in earned

$144 for the fund. Thanks for your participation in this endeavor.
