VOCATIONS

God is calling new vocations to the priesthood, religious life and the diaconate. Are you one of them?

The Archdiocese of Hartford welcomes inquiries from men seeking to serve the Church as priests or deacons and from men and women who are discerning a vocation to the consecrated life as a religious brother or sister.

To talk about a priestly vocation, contact Father Jeffrey Gubbiotti, Vocation Director, at 860-761-7456 or by email: [email protected].

For information about religious life and men’s and women’s religious communities, contact Sister Mariette Moan, Vicar for Religious, 860-541-6491.

For those seeking information about the diaconate, contact Deacon Robert Pallotti, Director of the Office of the Diaconate, 860-242-5573 ext. 7447.

WELCOME

"So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him." What did Zebedee think about all of this? His sons and his partners, James and John, suddenly left their post and followed Jesus. So there he stood in the boat with a crew of employees, but not one of his sons. We can't help but wonder whether Zebedee was in favor of this promise that his heirs would become "fishers of men." Most likely, this event was the cause of some familial tension.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus instructs us to love and serve others for the love of God. But the Lord also makes it clear that our devotion to him is meant to trump our devotion to anything-or anyone-else. For our part, we are called to allow this divine allegiance to exist in those we love, even when it means a sacrifice for us as well. Parents for example, like Zebedee, are called to encourage their children to follow the Lord's call. A son or daughter's vocation to religious life certainly exemplifies this kind of sacrifice for a parent who might have had a different plan in mind. But in truth every son and daughter has a vocation from God and parents have the opportunity to support and assist their children as they seek to hear and follow God's special plan for their lives.

We don't know for sure how Zebedee responded to the vocation of his sons, but we know that James and John were counted among the Twelve Apostles and that their devotion and dedication helped to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Regardless of what he might have thought as he stood in that boat, we can be quite sure that looking back now, Zebedee can rejoice heartily in the choice of his sons to leave their nets and follow Christ.

ARCHDIOCESAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOLS

There will be a second collection on January 27th and 28th to support the Archdiocesan Catholic high schools. We ask for your participation in helping us reach our 2018 goal of $250,000.

Your investment will yield significant results, since our Catholic high schools offer students exceptional academics, solid faith formation, and a true spirit of service. We deeply value your support of Catholic school education as we continue to form another generation in the faith.

HAPPY HOUSE UPDATE

Dear Father Golas,

Thank you and the Holy Family Church for your very generous gift of $7,500 to the Haitian Health Foundation (HHF). Your gift will be used to build six Happy Houses for needy families in one of the 105 rural mountain villages that are under the HHF umbrella of care.

Housing is a critical determinant of health and, over the years, we have built over 3,500 strong, cement houses. The Happy House allows a needy family to leave a shack with a dirt floor and thatched roof that offers no security or protection from the elements.

During 2016's Hurricane Matthew, most of the Happy Houses lost their roofs to the 140-170 mph sustained winds that destroyed the Jeremie area. Still, we were pleased to see that, in nearly every case, the walls and foundations remained intact. With our skilled labor force focusing on repairing and re-roofing existing houses, HHF has not yet been able to resume new construction. We expect to begin building houses again sometime during the first half of 2018.
