ORDINARY TIME…
WHAT IS SO ‘ORDINARY’ ABOUT IT?
This past Monday, January 11, 2021, we began
another period of time in our Church year entitled
Ordinary Time. So, what is it? What is so ordinary
about it? It simply is a period of time in our church
calendar where we can spend out days worshipping
outside the great liturgical seasons of Christmas and
Easter along with their preparation times, Advent and
Lent. It is during this time in the calendar year when
we remember, in prayer, many Saints, for example.
This period of time also allows the church to celebrate
Masses in honor of saints or The Blessed Virgin. There
are any number of Mass intentions of the Holy Father.
We can remember to pray for persecuted Christians.
The liturgical color for this time of the year is green.
There are two periods of this special time within the
calendar year… the space of time from the end of the
Christmas season up to Ash Wednesday.
The second period falls between the end of the Easter
season until the beginning of the season of Advent.
Prayer time is
essential for our
spiritual growth and
the opportunity to
participate in the
celebration of the
Mass is the best
way to
communicate with
the Lord and one
another!

6¿QUE PUEDO HACER PARA CRECER ESPIRITUAL-
MENTE (segunda parte)?
Participar de los estudios bíblicos: Diferente al servicio
tradicional de los domingos, los estudios bíblicos que se
ofrecen durante la semana permiten que levantes la mano
si tienes alguna pregunta o si no entiendes algo.
Mientras estés leyendo a
Dios.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
READING I 1 SM 3:3B-10, 19
Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD where
the ark of God was. The LORD called to Samuel, who
answered, “Here I am.” Samuel ran to Eli and said, “Here
I am. You called me.” “I did not call you, “ Eli said. “Go
back to sleep.” So he went back to sleep. Again the
LORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. “Here I
am, “ he said. “You called me.” But Eli answered, “I did
not call you, my son. Go back to sleep.”
At that time Samuel was not familiar with the LORD,
because the LORD had not revealed anything to him as
yet. The LORD called Samuel again, for the third time.
Getting up and going to Eli, he said, “Here I am. You
called me.” Then Eli understood that the LORD was
calling the youth. So he said to Samuel, “Go to sleep,
and if you are called, reply, Speak, LORD, for your
servant is listening.” When Samuel went to sleep in his
place, the LORD came and revealed his presence,
calling out as before, “Samuel, Samuel!” Samuel
answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”
Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him, not
permitting any word of his to be without effect.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 40:2, 4, 7-8, 8-9, 10
R. Here I am, Lord; I come to do Your will.
I have waited, waited for the Lord, and He stooped toward
me and heard my cry. And He put a new song into my
mouth, a hymn to our God.
R. Here I am, Lord; I come to do Your will.
Sacrifice or offering you wished not, but ears open to obedi-
ence You gave me. Holocausts or sin-offerings you south
not; then said I, “Behold I come.”.
R. Here I am, Lord; I come to do Your will.
“In the written scroll it is prescribed for me, to do Your will, O
my God, is my delight, and your law is within my heart!”
R. Here I am, Lord; I come to do Your will.
I announced Your justice in the vast assembly; I did not re-
strain my lips, as you, O Lord, know.
R. Here I am, Lord; I come to do Your will.
READING 2 1 COR 6:13C-15A, 17-20
Brothers and sisters: The body is not for immorality, but
for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body; God raised the
Lord and will also raise us by his power. Do you not
know that your bodies are members of Christ? But
whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one Spirit with
him. Avoid immorality. Every other sin a person commits
is outside the body, but the immoral person sins against
his own body. Do you not know that your body is a tem-
ple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from
God, and that you are not your own? For you have been
purchased at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.
R. Alleluia, alleluia. JN 1:41, 17B
We have found the Messiah: Jesus Christ, who brings us
truth and grace.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL JN 1:35-42
John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he
watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”
The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.
Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them,
“What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” —
which translated means Teacher —, “where are you stay-
ing?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they
went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed
with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. An-
drew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who
heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own
brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah”
— which is translated Christ —.Then he brought him to
Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the
son of John; you will be called Cephas” — which is
translated Peter.

Join Holy Family Parish for a special at-home retreat -
33 Days to Greater Glory – a retreat with Father Michael Gaitley
Father Michael Gaitley, author of the popular 33 Days to Morning Glory has finished his third
book, 33 DAYS TO GREATER GLORY: A TOTAL CONSECRATION TO THE FATHER
THROUGH JESUS BASED ON THE GOSPEL OF JOHN. Our Parish has arranged a
discounted bulk rate of this book for us to hold another at-home retreat during Lent,
beginning on Ash Wednesday, February 17 and ending on Palm Sunday, March 28. Each
day involves a reflection reading from the book and a consecration on the concluding day that we will have at our weekend
Masses on Palm Sunday. The book also includes a 9 day consecration to St. Joseph. In addition, Father Nathaniel Polinski,
OSB, one of the popular Benedictine priests that is a weekend guest for Masses in Plum recently authored an academic book,
That the Scriptures Might Be Fulfilled through Perfect Worship. Father Nathaniel will share a presentation from his scholarly
work on Palm Sunday afternoon. The title of his presentation will be “Diving More Deeply into the Passion of our Lord Jesus
Christ according to John.” Parishioners, especially those who have completed the 33 Days to Greater Glory retreat, are invited
to attend in person at St. John the Baptist Church or via livestream. Sign up now to reserve your copy of 33 Days to Greater

FR. GEORGE UPDATE
Last Sunday, Father Dalton tested positive for
COVID. Since he had been experiencing symptoms
earlier in the week, he remained quarantined.
Father Dalton has had only mild symptoms and is staying
at the rectory at St. Irenaeus Church which is a separate
house. He lives in a separate rectory from the other clergy
and has not been present in any of our public buildings
for over two weeks. All of our buildings have been
electrostatically sanitized again last week.
When Father Dalton shared that he had symptoms and
was being tested, we issued a Flocknote to everyone who
has signed up for COVID updates. We sent another
Flocknote when he got the news that he tested positive.
Flocknotes can be sent to email or your cell phone. If you
would like to be added to the Flocknote COVID update
group for future notifications, email Kathy Dober
[email protected] or call the parish
office. Thanks to all parishioners for their prayers for
Father Dalton and for all those affected by this dangerous
virus for their continued healing and safety.

HOLY FAMILY SOS CHRISTMAS BRUNCH
Since 2014 the SOS (Serving Our Seniors) Ministry has conducted a Christmas brunch to provide a meal
for those struggling financially, the elderly, the homeless, and anyone who wanted to come and not eat alone on
Christmas Day. This outreach took on a new look in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions. The Holy
Family Parish Christmas Brunch Team felt it was important to carry on with the spirit of Christmas and decided that
delivering small gifts of pastries, fruit, crackers, cookies, candy bars, and a small ornament of the Holy Family,
while observing all CDC guidelines, was the best way to share the joy of Christmas in 2020 to the homebound and
needy.
The Christmas Brunch Team reached out to senior high rises, senior centers, service associations and food
banks in Delmont, Monroeville, Murrysville, Oakmont, Penn Hills, Plum, and Verona, as well as parishioners of
Holy Family Parish in Oakmont, Plum and Verona to determine those who were in need of some Christmas joy.
With God’s guidance and grace, a number of volunteers from Holy Family Parish in Oakmont, Plum and
Verona were able to deliver gifts of joy to two hundred fifty-eight (258) homebound individuals this past
Christmas in the following areas: Apollo, Bradenville, Derry, Derry Township, Latrobe, Loyalhanna, Monroeville,
Murrysville, New Kensington, Oakmont, Penn Hills, Pittsburgh, Plum, Springdale, Verona, and Youngstown,
PA. The gifts were packaged on December 23
rd
, with delivery occurring on Dec 23
rd
, 24
th
, and 25
th
, by twenty-
three teams of drivers, including four teams from our namesake parish, Holy Family Parish in Latrobe. One of the
recipients later remarked, “The gift of joy was a ray of sunshine in a very dreary year.”
Another recipient exclaimed about receiving the
gift in spite of the snow, "I am in appreciation of
the people who delivered the gift bags. They
needed a dog sled to get through this morning!
God bless them all!" The volunteers received
gifts of another sort, “People were so grateful and
Happy to see us; it truly warmed our hearts.”
UPDATE - GIFT CARDS FOR SALE
Thank you to everyone who purchased gift cards from our supply. Listed below are the remaining cards that need to be

The Holy Family 31 Club
Supporting Future Vocations from Holy Family Parish
Would you be willing to dedicate prayer time one day of each month for vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life in
Holy Family Parish? If so, The 31 Club wants you!
What: The 31 Club is a way for parishioners prayerfully to help in the vocations effort at the parish level.
When: No meetings, just sign up for one day a month.
Who: Open to all parishioners including those that are homebound and wish to offer their sufferings.
How it works:
-Sign a pledge form (below) to pray one day of the month (that you have chosen).
-Choose a type of prayer.
-Examples are: Mass, Rosary, Holy Hour before Blessed Sacrament, Divine Mercy Chaplet or some form of fasting,
abstaining, sacrifice, offering of suffering.
Goal: The 31 Club is to have dedicated prayer all possible 31 days of each month.
Prayer is talking to God. Through prayer we deepen our friendship with Jesus. Through prayer we deepen our understanding of
God’s plan for our life. Through prayer we deepen our appreciation for how much God loves us. Through prayer we strengthen
our spiritual lives so that we, through the grace of God, change ourselves. In seeking God’s call for our lives, prayer helps us to
choose and live our vocation.
Simple prayer: Lord, help me to live my vocation and pray for those called to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life.
The 31 Club Pledge

On Mission Prayer
Father of Mercy, as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! endow us
with your gifts of courage, collaboration, and compassion. Help us to fulfill the
mission of Jesus and his Church through vibrant parishes and effective
ministries. Raise up selfless, energetic leaders to serve the Church in fidelity
and with care. May we the Church of Pittsburgh in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler,
Greene, Lawrence and Washington Counties be sustained and strengthened
