Health Ministry: Processed Foods - Which to Avoid In today's world, many barely have time to eat a meal much less shop often for fresh food and then prepare it. Instead we opt for chemically processed food which can be stored: frozen meals, instant noodles and soup, packaged bread and desserts, meats like hotdogs and chicken nuggets, plus soda and candy. Convenience can equal bad news in large amounts of hidden sodium (salt), fats and sugar! Processed Foods best to avoid or limit: • Bacon - high levels of salt, saturated fat and many preservatives. • Granola Bars - loaded with sugar, digest fast, don't satisfy hunger long, little nutrition. • Instant Ramen - almost zero nutrition with salt, salt and more salt. • Fruit Snacks- Packed with high fructose corn syrup with only a drop of real fruit. Tends to stick to teeth leading to cavities. • Microwave Popcorn - it's not the popcorn unless high in salt/butter, but a chemical found in the bag which is a likely carcinogen. • Frozen Dinners - high in salt, fat and sugar. • Catsup/Ketchup - tomatoes are so diluted with sugar / salt they have no natural value.
Enjoy all things in moderation. Just check the nutrition labels to avoid anything high in fats, sugars and chemicals you can't pronounce. healthline/MedicalNewsToday/FDA

MINISTERS NEXT WEEK
Introductions to Readings by Bishop Ken Untener, in collaboration with Catherine Haven and Fr. Bill Taylor First Reading - Amos 7:12-15 Amos preached about 750 years before Christ and was the prophet whose words were put into writing. At that time, the Jewish people were spilt into two kingdoms: Israel in the north and Judah in the south. God sent Amos from the southern kingdom of Judah to preach to the people in the north. So he faithfully went there, to a place known as the shrine of Bethel. As so often happens to prophets, the priest wasn’t pleased that he came. Second Reading - Ephesians 1:3-14 Today and for the next few weeks, we will be reading from the letter to the Ephesians. Ephesus, a major seaport of the western coast of what is today Turkey, was a center for early Christians. Today’s passage is the beginning of the letter and is a prayer praising God for the good things God has done for us.

SUMMER UPDATE July 4th marks the half-way point of the summer for us. I can honestly say that the first half has flown by, and I fully anticipate the second half going just as quickly.
In addition to all of the paperwork, state reports, updating of computers, cleaning, etc. that has to be accomplished in the summer, we once again have taken on several capital improvement projects.
We have removed the remaining red lockers from the second floor hallway, painted, and are having cubbies built for the students in the lower grades. The ceiling tiles have been replaced and the drop ceiling track has been painted.
We have placed a covering over the gym ceiling to hold back the deteriorating vinyl. The gym has been painted (for the first time this century) and looks beautiful! Next week they will start on the resurfacing of the gym floor.
Two more bathrooms have been updated with new stalls and doors and a new drinking fountain (with a water bottle refill station) is being installed on the second floor.
We are looking forward to showing off all of our renovations at our Back to School Open House/Movie Night on Friday, August 17th!

6. A person using a scapular is (a) praying it (b) kneeling on it (c) wearing it (d) smelling it
Answers to the Special Terms II Catholic Faith Quiz
1. (c) Catholic parishes rely on the service of sacristans to care for, organize, and arrange the sacred vessels and vestments that are used for the celebration of the Eucharistic liturgy.
2. (b) A ciborium looks like a chalice but it has a more rounded bowl and has a cover usually surmounted with a cross.
3. (b) A lavabo set (lavabo is Latin for I shall wash; see Psalm 26) refers to the vessels used for washing of the priest’s hands after the Offertory of the Mass.
4. (b) A miter is two pieces of stiff triangle-shaped material attached at the side to form a hat. Israelite priests used to wear something similar. In about the twelfth century it became the customary hat for Catholic bishops.
5. (a) The censer burns incense made of aromatic gum, and the rising smoke symbolizes prayers rising to heaven. The vessel is also called a “thurible.” 6. (c) The word comes from the Latin for “shoulder blade.” It’s a garment covering the chest and back, worn by religious. A shorter version for laypeople is only two small pieces of cloth connected by two long cords. The most widely used is the “brown scapular” of the Carmelite Order.
