Health Ministry: I Brush. Why Floss, Too? Each tooth has five surfaces! A toothbrush cleans the top and outer surfaces. Floss is needed to clean the two tight spaces between the teeth and under the gums in the gap at the base of the teeth. Without floss you’re cleaning only three of the five surfaces! Bacteria which live in the mouth feast on leftover food particles to create a sticky, soft and colorless plaque which produces an acid which can cause cavities and gum disease. Flossing can remove plaque, but if not removed in the soft stage it becomes tartar which is hard, crusty and yellow/brown. Tartar can only be removed with dental, scraping equipment. Besides discolored teeth and bad breath, bacteria left to flourish in the mouth can harm the rest of the body and lead to heart disease, respiratory problems, diabetes complications and more. How to floss: 1. Use a piece of floss 15 to 18 inches long. 2. Slide the floss between teeth. 3. Wrap it around each tooth in shape of "C". 4. Polish with an up and down motion. (Most of us get step 2...but skip 3 and 4!) WebMd/American Dental Assoc./Dental Care Center

Introductions to Readings by Bishop Ken Untener, in collaboration with Catherine Haven and Fr. Bill Taylor First Reading - Isaiah 50:5-9 Chapters 40-55 of the book of Isaiah contain the message of a prophet who spoke to God’s people during their exile in Babylon. Several times, the prophet speaks about a “Servant of God” who will one day deliver God’s people and face many sufferings in doing so. Christians have traditionally identified Jesus with this “suffering Servant.” Second Reading - James 2:14-18 Among the New Testament letters, the letter of James is the one most attentive to social justice. Today’s passage offers practical advice about how to put our faith into action.

TRADITIONAL VALUES. EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATION. St. John XXIII represents 150 years of Catholic Education dedicated to encouraging and developing well-rounded, self-confident and compassionate children and young adults who lead successful, mindful, service-driven lives. Our school community is the foundation on which our core principles of faith and hard work bind us together as a family.

If you are interested in a Catholic education that provides a challenging, structured and thoughtful learn-ing environment led by highly qualified and experienced teachers, contact Principal Dawn Pickerill at 424-1196 for a meeting and a tour of the school.

THE FESTIVAL IS BACK Last week I was contacted by the Bishop Fenwick Principal who asked if St. John XXIII Catholic School would be willing to take over the Fenwick Festival as they would like to move in a different direction in regards to their fundraising efforts. After much prayer, discernment, and discussion, I have agreed to take on this challenge.

For the first year, the festival will be called the Fenwick/St. John XXIII Festival so that there is continuity and a connection for the community. While Fenwick’s name will still be associated with the festival in 2019, they will have no part in putting it on or the proceeds that it earns. The following year (2020) the name will be changed to just be the St. John XXIII Catholic School Festival.

The festival will be held at St. John XXIII Catholic School – 3806 Manchester Blvd as it was for many years prior to Fenwick building the new school on State Route 122. The weekend will remain the same as it has for several years – the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday after Father’s Day. For 2019, that means it will be held on June 21st, 22nd, and 23rd.

We are looking forward to this new adventure and are very happy to keep this tradition alive for the people of Middletown! More details to follow in future bulletins.
