We have these Catholic CD’s available at El Santuario gift shop and we have sold enough to enable us to pur-chase new CD’s. This week we are featuring:

An Invitation to Consider the Catholic Faith

Why should a person who is not Catholic consider enter-ing into the Church? Father Francis Peffley gives five compelling reasons, followed by a simple outline of the steps one would take to begin the process of becoming Catholic. Fr. Peffley is active with parish young adult mininstry, retreat work, Catholic apologetics, and evange-lization, His hobbies include golf, scuba diving, bowling, and juggling fire torches and machetes.

FROM THE DESK OF FR. JIM, S.F. FROM THE FINANCE COUNCIL

2018 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

(From New Sunday & Holy Day Liturgies by Flor McCarthy, SDB Year B.)

Some years ago an American journalist (Studs Terkel) did a survey to try to find out how people felt about their work. Armed with a tape recorder he went around the coun-try interviewing people. His findings were that the over-whelming majority of people are unhappy with what they are doing. And work begins when you don’t like what you’re do-ing. However, not liking one’s work is nothing new. In the old days miners, railroad laborers, cotton pickers, sweatshop workers didn’t like what they did. Conditions were very bad in those days. The workers worked long hours and were very poorly paid. Yet even though people didn’t like their work they never dreamed of questioning it. They were con-tent to have a job that put bread on the table for their family. But today people are asking questions. They want more from work than a wage. They want the work to have some meaning. They want to get some feeling of fulfilment out of doing it. They don’t want to be regarded as mere cogs in a machine. Their deepest ache comes from the need for recognition. A workman told Terkel how he would like to see a skyscrap-er with a plaque bearing the names of all the workers who put it up, not just those of the architect and the builder. ‘Who built the pyramids?’ he asks. ‘We don’t know the names of those guys. All we know is the name of Pharaoh.’ A check-out girl in a supermarket describes herself as ‘nothing’. A refuse collector sees himself as a horse pulling a wagon. On the other hand, those who like their work know who they are. They feel needed and useful. Tommy loves being a fireman because it gives him a chance to help people. The chemist feels close to the people who come in and out of her shop. Terkel’s book leaves us pondering this thought: if people find their work to be empty, what do they find their lives to be? Where does all this leave the unemployed, and what can we say to them?
