We have rules for driving a car, for playing sports, for playing games, in relationships and many more! Sometimes, we don’t mind these rules, and other times, we don’t want to follow any or all of them. We also have rules in our Catholic Church. And the same thing in our church happens—some of the rules, we have no prob- lems following and other rules can be difficult to follow. However, we have to follow the rules if we want to drive, play organized sports, play games or if we want to be suc- cessful in relationships. That is true about the Catholic Church. I recently got a letter from the Assumption Abbey, a Benedictine Monastery in North Dakota. Part of the letter dealt with the rules that the monks live by—the Rule of St. Benedict. It was stated that those rules guide them toward their ultimate goal of salvation in Christ and also provides them with a means by which they can live their earthly lives in faith, virtue, charity and community. The first word in the Rule is “Obsculta”, which means, “listen”. The monks are asked to listen to God, to their ab- bot, and to each other. We too should be listening to God, to our bosses (our abbot), and to one another! Not only do we have to listen, but we have to act on our listening, Listening and then acting will lead us closer to God rather than us trying to be a god in our own right! After being told to listen, the monks are told to “Obey”. They cannot obey if they are not able to listen to what they are being told. The same thing is true for us. If we don’t listen, we will not be able to obey the rules of the world. Some of the monks who have lived by the Benedictine Rule for decades, often say that the most difficult of their vows is that of obedience. Just as the monks have to be careful with this rule, we too should be careful. The abbot of the monas- tery has to be sure that the commands he gives will led the monks closer to God. (He shouldn’t tell the monks to dig a bunch of holes just because he can do that —instead the monks should be doing something for their own good and the good of others! This is true for us also. We follow all rules, but those in authority have to be realistic in the rules they give us! Although we may question the rules, we hope that the majority of the rules are there for our own good and will lead us to more goodness and Godliness! We have to be careful not to stop following the rules just because we don’t like them, understand them, or agree with them. If you think the rules aren’t good, discuss them with your friendly parish priest. You might be surprised at what you learn when you ask a question!! The Men's Club Organizational and planning meeting on Sunday, October 21st following 11 o'clock Mass. All men of the parish are eligible for membership and there are no dues. For those who have yet to participate in this group, consider joining us as an opportunity to serve your church in projects that contribute to the social life of the parish and the care and mainte-nance of our building and property. We also have some other important mandates in our bylaws. . Your time and efforts, and especially your ideas, would be most welcome. The Men's Club is not necessarily a huge commitment in terms of your schedule, whatever it might be. How much you participate is up to you--all contributions are welcome.

ON THE HORIZON AND WAITING FOR YOU. . . You can be part of a sharing team! Our Religious Formation Program is in need of teachers for the 5/6th grade class and substitute teachers. What would be your responsibility if you agree to help? As a teacher, you would be supplied with an instructional manual for the class. You would have to make up a lesson plan for each class from that manual. If you are a substitute teacher, you will be given the lesson plan from the teacher you are helping. Subs are only needed when we have a teacher who cannot make it for a class ——and that does not happen very often. Parents are the first instructor, followed by church attendance and example of other church members. When you volunteer for one of these jobs, you are teaching twice: once by example and secondly by presenting information to the children. The future of the church depends on passing along religious teaching to the youth of to-day so that they can become the adult members of our church tomorrow! Classes meet on Wednesday, 6 to 7 pm. Please call Ginger Kusnier at 989-834-2512 and volunteer today!

Thurs. Oct 18 at 7:00 pm, St Isidore large hall. All ladies of St Isidore/Holy Family are invited to a gathering of WINGS (Women in God’s Service). The program will include a story read by Nancy Kienitz. You are asked to bring a jar of peanut but-ter and/or jelly for the Food Bank. Refreshments will be served. “The mission of WINGS is to build community among the women of our parish through spiritual, social, and charitable activities with the help of the Blessed Virgin Mary as our patron and guide.”
