On February 12th, the Grade 1 class celebrated the 100th day of school.
The 100th day is quite a fun milestone that we celebrate in our classroom. It marks just over the half way point
in the school year. It is filled with activities all centered on the guest of honour; the number 100.
From the very first day of school, our class began keeping track of the number of days we have been in school.
As part of our morning calendar routine, we add one part of a caterpillar to our board, until we reach 100. You
can sure feel the excitement grow as we get closer to 100.
When the students arrive to school, they are greeted with a banner that reads “100 Days Smarter” thanks to
Mrs. Pritchard.
We kick off the day with finding 100 Hershey Kisses hidden in the Grade 1 classroom.
Other activities range from where will 100 footsteps take us to build a structure with 100 Lego pieces.
Here is a photo gallery to see how Holy Ghost Students commemorated this special day!
The best part of the day was seeing the students dressed up of how they would look at 100 years old.
I hope the children enjoyed their “100 cookies” and l hope you enjoy listening to your child talk about their
100th day.

A few short days ago the Catholic community began the Lenten journey toward our greatest feast, Easter.
Lent is characterized by the practices of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Although prayer is already a part of
our day, we will be extending our prayer time with visits to the Chapel to pray the Stations of the Cross and to
have some quiet time with Jesus.
In regards to fasting, children should never fast from essential meals but they can “give up” non essen-
tial foods like treats. Jesus fasted for 40 days. (If He thought it was important we should at least give it a try.)
To help our children understand what it is to go without, we are giving up our treats until Easter (with the ex-
ception of upcoming birthdays). With the money saved not buying all those cookies, chocolates and gummies,
maybe use it to purchase some real fruit for our almsgiving project. Every week we will be collecting apples
and oranges for the soup kitchen in our neighbourhood.
Prayer…Fasting…Almsgiving
Help make this a meaningful Lenten journey for your child as we walk along the way of
love with Him.
Grade 2 News
Holy Ghost School held another successful Science Fair in
February. The grade 2 class studied the topic The Planets of
the Solar System. This was an interesting topic for the
children. They learned about each of the eight planets and the
five dwarf planets. During our discussions in class they were
eager to share the information they had learned or researched
at home.
The students prepared their own project on a planet of
their choice. The projects were each done extremely well and
showed much originality. We will keep the projects in the
class for a while as they decorate our class so nicely.
Holy Ghost School
Science/Learning Fair
February 20, 2020
On Thursday, February 20th all students of Holy Ghost School participated in the 51st Annual Science Learn-
ing Fair. Science is asking questions about the world around us and trying to find answers to those questions.
Students learn how to follow the scientific method, research, present their ideas to a judge and many other im-
portant skills throughout the process. Creating a science fair project is a valuable learning experience.
We had a total of 127 group or individual projects from grades 4 through 8. Students were judged on Thurs-
day afternoon. We would like to thank all our science fair judges for taking the time to participate in this years
science fair.
Teachers would like to congratulate all their students for their efforts. Parents play a big part too; whether it’s
driving to a partner’s house, purchasing materials, or just helping children manage their time. Without this
support, our science learning fair would not be the success that it is. We are all very thankful to parents too.

NEWS FROM THE PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL (PAC)
HOT LUNCH
In February we introduced a new Hot Lunch option on Tuesdays with Salisbury House
Catering. The trial continues in March and we presented parents with a sandwich menu from Subway on
Thursdays. Don’t be shy, forward your comments to the PAC!
Are you available for light duty volunteering on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 11:30-12:15? Lunches come
prepackaged but we need help distributing to the classrooms. This is a perfect volunteer opportunity for those
who can take up to 45 minutes max. over lunch, once or twice a month.
SCIENCE FAIR
CONGRATULATIONS! to all participants of our school’s science fair on February 20th. The PAC has made
$25 available to all Gold winners who enter their research project in the province-wide science fair. Bring
your proof of participation to Mrs. Gubala for reimbursement.
FUNDRAISING
Earlier in the year we mentioned a new ‘passive’ fundraising opportunity called Fund Script. This program
involves making your everyday purchases using cash cards (gift cards) purchased through the school. Cards
are available for a wide variety of retailers, returning a percentage of their value to the school. Order forms
and instructions were sent home with students and will be available on the website for download.
COMMUNION – Each spring our Grade 2 students are wonderfully dressed as they present themselves for
the sacrament of communion. The Uniform Exchange program will extend itself to facilitating the sale (or
gift) of pre-worn items. Do you have an excellent condition communion dress, suit or accessories? Let us
know if you are interested in participating either as a seller or buyer!
UNIFORM EXCHANGE – Has your child lost a school sweater or stained a shirt beyond washing out?
Good and excellent used uniform items and shoes are available for low prices (well-worn items are free!).
Contact Dorota at [email protected] to view or submit clothing.
NEXT MEETING - Tuesday March 10 at 4pm in the upstairs Staff Lounge.

Hello dear children and parents!
It’s still winter but our hearts are full of colour! The children made beautiful Valentine’s Day hearts for par-
ents. I hope every family embraces Saint Valentine as their patron to bring smiles, joy and love to children and
adults alike. In March we welcome the SPRING season!
Class 1 continues learning the letters of the alphabet in reading and writing. We can ask questions and answer
them correctly.
Class 3 learned nouns and verbs. We will focus on singular and plural adjectives in developing sentences that
are interesting and grammatically correct.
Remember that library books are exchanged weekly on Tuesdays and children should keep a journal of com-
pleted books. The reading contest ends in May with a distribution of prizes.

Grade 3 News
The grade 3 class enjoyed their outing to the Children’s Museum during Catholic Schools Week. In celebra-
tion of I Love to Read month, they even had the opportunity to create a story at the museum.
Thanks you to Mrs. Magtuloy, our wonderful E.A and our terrific parent volunteers, Mr. and Mrs. Del Rosario
and Mrs. Ordonez for making this such an enjoyable day.
Holy Ghost School would like to extend a warm thank you to Mrs. Bernadette Smith
the MLA for Point Douglas for being a guest reader to our student during “I Love to
Read” month; and for her wonderful donation of books to our school library.
PROVINCIAL MIDDLE YEARS ASSESSMENT
The Manitoba Department of Education facilitates a provincial
assessment for all grades 7 and 8 students. As part of the Middle
Years Assessment, HG School will report to parents on the
achievement levels of Grade 7 and Grade 8 children in certain key competencies (important skills). Student’s
performance will be compared to mid-grade provincial criteria in certain areas (competencies) of mathematics
at Grade 7, and in reading and writing at Grade 8. In addition, at Grade 7 there will be a report on students’
involvement with their learning (student engagement). For the Middle Years Assessment there is not a specific
provincial test students write. Teachers regularly observe students and discuss their achievement with them,
and use the information to help children learn. Teachers will also use the information collected this way to pre-
pare the required reports. The Middle Years Assessment reports will be included with the 2nd Term Progress
Reports. These Reports are one of several ways HG School communicates with parents on, their child’s pro-
gress. For more information on Manitoba’s Middle Years Assessment go to:
https://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/assess/myreporting.html

Developing a Positive Growth Mindset
Did you know that your brain grows bigger every time you learn how to do new things? Learn-ing to do new things is not always easy. Sometimes you have to work very hard and spend many hours on one thing until you can do it. So if you want to be a good reader, you have to read a lot. If you want to be good in Science, you have to study hard. If you want to be good in Math, you have to practice lots of problems and try different strategies. Do not give up if you make mistakes! Mistakes are part of learning. You may not know it YET… but you’ll get there!
What is true about your brain?
A. Your brain can grow B. Your brain never grows
What do you have to do if you want to learn hard things?
A. Work hard B. Spend a few minutes on it
What do you need to do if you make a mistake?
A. Keep trying B. Give up

From the Gym Hello everyone. The grade 5-8 classes wrote their basketball test in February; that will go towards their term 2
report cards. Following basketball we will begin a badminton unit. The K-4 classes continue to move
through classes that involve tag games, dodgeball games, soccer, team handball etc.
If you have any questions at all on what is going on inside your child’s Phys. Ed class, do not hesitate to con-
tact me at the school.
Sincerely,
Mr. J. Thiessen
