PENNY SOCIAL Our summer “Penny Social” sponsored by the Family Events Committee was wonderful evening! All who attended enjoyed themselves. Thank you to all the parishioners who donated new gifts. Your generosity enabled the committee to award over 200 prizes to lucky recipients. A big “Thank You” to the adults, teens and children who set up the hall on Tuesday, to those who baked delicious and decorative cakes for our famous “Cake Walk”, to all who worked at the Penny Social, cleaned up and to all who attended and supported our Penny Social. A very special “Thank You” to Jackie Kovatch, Danielle Dispenza and Tricia Mooney who served as chairpersons for the Penny Social; they did an excellent job! Without them and the many people who worked with them, this event would not have been possible. Thanks also to Joe Kovatch who was superb in calling the prizes! It was truly a parish event. God bless you all.

EVBS - Ecumenical Vacation Bible School-August 10th – 14th at Holy Innocents

Each year on July 26th we celebrate the feast of Saints Anne and Joachim, the parents of our Blessed Mother and grandparents of Jesus. Since the feast falls on a Sunday this year, our Sunday liturgy supercedes the celebration of their memorial. Coincidentally the composer of our Entrance hymn, Praise

to the Lord, shares the same name as one of these saints.

Joachim Neander was the grandson of a musician and son of a teacher. His family name in German was Neumann (“new man”), but, as was popular at the time, his grandfather, also named Joachim, changed it to the Greek equivalent. He was born in 1650 in Bremen Germany and studied theology in his hometown from 1666 to 1670. In 1671 he became a private tutor in Heidelberg and in 1674 became a teacher at a Latin school in Düsseldorf. While living there, he would often go to the nearby valley of the Düssel river where nature served as an inspiration for his poems and hymns. Joachim also held gatherings and services in the valley and gave many sermons becoming a popular preacher among the people. The valley was renamed in his honor in the early 19th century and became famous when the remains of the Homo neanderthalensis (Neanderthal Man) were found there in 1856. In 1679, he returned to Bremen and worked as a pastor. The next year, at the age of 30, he became seriously ill and died, presumably of the plague or tuberculosis.

Praise to the Lord, in German, Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren, was written in 1665 and is generally regarded as one of the greatest hymns of praise of the Christian church. Because the music's powerful, poetic lyrics are difficult to translate from the original German, no one version had been accepted as the standard. The situation was resolved in 2007 with the creation of the Standard Revised English Version, which is based on the 1863 work of Catherine Winkworth, with later work done to harmonize other versions and incorporate the best of what the various traditions have to offer.

While Joachim Neander wrote about 60 hymns and provided tunes for many others, and is considered by many to be the first important German hymnist after the Reformation, it is Praise to the Lord for which he is best remembered and the one that appears in most major hymnals.

A SUMMER PRAYER From the “Circle of Life” by

Joyce Rupp and Macrina Wiederkehr

May you breathe in the beauty of summer with its power of transformation. May this beauty permeate all that feels un-beautiful in you. May the God of summer give us beauty. May you seek and find spaces of repose during these summer months. May these moments refresh and restore the tired places within you. May the God of summer give us rest. May you be open to times of celebration and recreation that are so much a part of summer. May you find happiness in these times of play and leisure. May the God of summer give us joy. May your eyes see the wonders of summer’s colors. May these colors delight you and entice you into contemplation and joy. May the God of summer give us inner light. May you feel the energy of summer rains penetrating thirsty gardens, golf courses, lawns, and farmlands. May these quenching rains remind you that your inner thirst needs quenching, May your inner self be refreshed, restored, and renewed. May the God of summer give us what we need for healing. May you savor the fresh produce that comes to your table and enjoy the fruits of summer’s bounty. May the God of summer give us a sense of satisfaction in the work of our hands. May you find shelter when the stormy skies of summer threaten your safety. May the God of summer give us shelter when inner storms threaten our peace of mind and heart. May you enjoy the unexpected and find surprises of beauty and happiness as you travel the roads on summer vacation. May the God of summer lead us to amazing discoveries as we travel the inner roads of our soul.

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July 28, 2015

First Reading: II Kings 4:42-44 A man brought twenty loaves of bread to Elisha the prophet, who told his servant to distribute it to the people. The servant asked how he could offer twenty loaves to one hundred people. Elisha replied that God had said, “They shall eat and there shall be some left over.” After all the people had eaten, there was bread left over as God had said. Second Reading: Ephesians 4:1-6 Paul implores the Ephesians to live a life worthy of their calling by preserving unity among all of Christ’s followers. He reminds them that there is one body, one Spirit, and one God who works through all people. Gospel: John 6:1-15 Jesus fed a crowd of five thousand people with five loaves of bread and a couple of dried fish. After everyone present had enough to eat, twelve baskets of leftover bread were collected. Jesus then realized the people would want to make him king so he fled alone.
