Feast of the Presentation

of the Lord Feb. 2, 2020

Reading I: Malachi 3:1-4 Responsorial Psalm 24:7,8,9,10 Reading II: 1 Hebrews 2:14-18 Gospel: Luke 2:22-40 or 2:22-32

Theme: “Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons” (Gospel).

In accordance with the Law, Joseph and Mary, the parents of Jesus conformed to the sacred rituals of the Torah. The presentation of the Lord includes the redemption of the firstborn and purification of Mary after childbirth. The purification of Mary requires a sacrifice by offering a year old lamb or a pair of turtledoves for those who could not afford a lamb. In the case of Joseph and Mary being poor, they offered a pair of turtledoves (pigeons). “You will dedicate to the Lord every newborn that opens the womb. Every human firstborn of the your sons you must ransom” (Exodus 13:1, 13:11-16). Also, Hannah offered her son Samuel to the Lord in the temple of Shiloh (Book of Samuel). Sacrificial offering is an expression of worship and devotion to God.

Forty days after Jesus’ birth, Mary and Joseph presented Jesus into the temple. In the temple, they encountered Simeon and Ann, devout servants of the Lord. As Simeon took the Child Jesus, he exclaims, “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel” (Gospel). Hence, the presentation of the Lord is also the feast of candles or Candle mass.

The Holy Eucharist is referred to as the Holy Sacrifice. “The Eucharist is the memorial of this sacrifice. The Church gathers to remember and to re-present the sacrifice of Christ in which we share through the action of the priest and the power of the Holy Spirit. Through the celebration of the Eucharist, we are joined to Christ's sacrifice and receive its inexhaustible benefits. As the Letter to the Hebrews explains, Jesus is the one eternal high priest who always lives to make intercession for the people before the Father” (USCCB on Eucharist). We come to celebrate the Eucharist to honor and glorify God, to thank Him for all the graces bestowed on the whole world, to satisfy God's justice for the sins of all and to obtain all graces and blessings.

Let us pray: Take, O Lord, and receive my entire liberty, my memory, my understanding and my whole will. All that I am and all that I possess you have given me. I surrender it all to you to be disposed of according to your will. Give me only your love and your grace; with these I will be rich enough, and will desire nothing more (prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola).

Lectura I: Malaquías 3: 1-4 Salmo Responsorial 24: 7,8,9,10 Lectura II: 1 Hebreos 2: 14-18 Evangelio: Lucas 2: 22-40 o 2: 22-32

Oremos: Toma, oh Señor, y recibe toda mi libertad, mi memoria, mi entendimiento y toda mi voluntad.

Pastoral Reflection By Dulce Maria Islas, Pastoral Council Member

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, this Sunday we witness another important event in our Lord’s life as man here on earth. The presentation of Jesus in the temple is another 'epiphany' celebration as the Christ Child is revealed as the Messiah through the words of Simeon and the testimony of Anna the prophetess. Christ is the light of the nations, the light of the world and should be the light of our lives. I personally enjoy this time of our Catholic faith since I was a child. Taking an image of baby Jesus to the church in beautiful clothes to commemorate the presentation of the Lord was always exciting and memorable. I felt my heart filled with such enormous joy but with a lot of pride and responsibility that now it makes me reflect about how do I feel now as an adult during this time? How can I share this joy and this responsibility with my family? What is the impact that I want others in my community to feel about this important event? Now even more so…how much responsibility are we willing to carry with pride to present our Lord Jesus before others as well?

February 26 “Ash Wednesday begins Lent, a time when we stop and assess how we’re doing in our walk with God. Lent helps us identify spiritual areas in which we can grow and sinful areas that we need to avoid. To repent, put simply, means to turn away from sin and turn toward God. We use ashes as an outward expression of our need to begin again.” Ash Wednesday reminds us that it is only through God that we have life; He gave it to us. Ash Wednesday also begins preparation for Holy Week and the Passion and Resurrection of the Lord, Jesus, without Whom we would have no life here and no

chance at eternal life in Heaven. This is just a great opportunity for us to get better.

God forgives. He loves. And He gives this sinner a second chance. teenlife.com ______________________________________________________________________________
