Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist

June 24, 2018 Reading I: Isaiah 49:1-6 Responsorial Psalm: 139:1b-3, 13-14ab,14c-15 Reading II: Acts 13:22-26 Gospel: Luke 1:57-66,80 T h e m e : “ J o h n i s h i s name” (Gospel).

Today, we give honor to St. John the Baptist, the precursor, forerunner, and baptizer of Jesus Christ. He was the Old Testament’s last prophet and the New Testament’s preacher of repentance. The angel Gabriel announced his birth and therefore the hand of God was upon him. The barren Elizabeth was able to conceive a child while the doubting Zechariah, the father was afflicted with aphasia until the divine promise came to pass.

Elizabeth expressed her experience of faith and joy when the Blessed Virgin Mary visited her. “Why, as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy! How is it that I am honored by a visit from the mother of my Lord?” (Luke 1:41-44). We can say John started his work and mission as early as his womb existence. He recognized and praised Jesus while still in Mary’s womb. Later, as John did his call, He baptized Jesus and the voice of God spoke, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

The birth and life of John the Baptist reminds us of God’s call to each of us. In God’s plan and providence, there are no accidents. God’s loving hand is upon those who believe. Faith perfects God’s work in us in an amazing way. In the divine and spiritual realm, the miracles of things to happen are obstructed by skepticism, indifference, cynicism, arrogance, sin, and unbelief.

One bold thing John did, he denounced the scandalous marriage of King Herod to his half-brother’s wife. He was unafraid of social and political power. Although bothered by his conscience, King Herod was pressured and ordered the beheading of John. In doing God’s will and as a witness, John met his early and martyred death. John as a witness “He himself was not the light, but came to give testimony to the light so that everyone might believe through him” (John 1:7).

Let us pray: O God, You raised up St. John the Baptist to prepare a perfect people for Christ. Fill your people with the joy of possessing His grace, and direct the minds of all the faithful in the way of peace and salvation. Grant that as St. John was martyred for truth and justice, so we may bravely profess our faith in you, and lead others to the Way, the Truth, and Eternal Life, Amen.

Lectura I: Isaías 49: 1-6 Salmo responsorial: 139: 1b-3, 13-14ab, 14c-15 Lectura II: Hechos 13: 22-26 Evangelio: Lucas 1: 57-66,80

Pastoral Reflection By Diana Puga, Pastoral Council Member Today is The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. In today’s Gospel, John is the miraculous son born to Zechariah and Elizabeth. The people of Judea were amazed that Zechariah was able to speak because he had named his son John. Zechariah also played a key role in God’s plan of salvation and was filled with the Holy Spirit. They also spoke of how the hand of the Lord was with John. John was sent from heaven to prepare the way for the Lord; to make straight the paths for him. He used baptism as the central symbol of sacrament. John is revered as a major religious figure, a prophet. Are you following a straight path? Are you praying? Are you being a prophet like John the Baptist? Do you have the faith that John the Baptist had? Faith is a quality that God values highly!

Parish Mission Statement: To unite our Parish family to grow in faith, love, and charity as we become active stewards in our church and community.

Holy Name Catholic Church Archdiocese Capital Campaign

Did you Know? Parish Fact We have 2677 Registered Parishioners. Only 1/3 of our Parishioners are active, 892. Capital Campaign Goal: $513,000.00 40% Share to Holy Name: $205,200.00 Proceeds for Multi-Purpose Building Phase #1 Classrooms, Outreach Ministry, CYO & Meeting Room Phase #2 Gymnasium HOW DO WE ATTAIN OUR GOAL? If we take the active families (892) and divide into our Campaign Goal, the average pledge per family would be $576.00.

$513,000.00 divided by 892 families = $576.00

This Campaign is a 3 Year Family Pledge… 3 year pledge would break it down to $16.00 dollars per month, per family.

$576.00 divided by 36 months = $16.00 If you want to break it down by the week it would be $3.69 dollars.

$576.00 divided by 156 weeks = $3.69

By explaining this formula, Parishioners will realize that this pledge is attainable and can be met. “For it is in Giving, that we Receive” (St. Francis of Assisi). ________________________________________________________________________ ¿Sabías? Hecho Parroquial Tenemos 2677 parroquianos registrados.

F.I.A.T. Faith in Action Teens

Calling all High School teens who have been Confirmed!!!

If you are a teen, have been Confirmed, looking to learn more about your Catholic Faith and want to serve others then FIAT is just for you! The word FIAT itself is from the Latin, literally meaning "Be it done;" it is the 'yes'' of Mary at the Annunciation - "Be it done unto me according to Thy word." At Confirmation you received the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, lets begin to see how you can use the gifts you have received. If you have any questions or are interested in being a part of FIAT please call Irma Bickel at 210 333-5020 or email at [email protected].

Mary’s Fiat is the supreme example of submitting ourselves to God’s will. She demonstrates to us the utmost act of humility. She responds to God’s authority. Looking at Mary’s submission to God’s authority tells not only about Mary, but also shows us a lot about God. God’s will works for the best in us. God’s will allows for freedom. God’s will operates out of love.
