SUMMONED BY GOD As Christmas draws near, Advent’s scriptures lure us into a world of dreams, signs, wonders, and the miracle of the virgin birth. Too often we allow the great stories of our faith, the ones that are most familiar, simply to wash over us. Today’s Gospel account of the events leading up to the birth of the Lord reads like a present-day soap opera. Yet Joseph’s courage, even in the midst of what must have been an incredibly confusing time, provides a model for us. Each week, we are summoned by God to embrace the way of goodness and truth through the proclamation of God’s holy word. Like Joseph, we are called to do as the Lord com-mands us. As we stand at the threshold of Christmas, let us have the courage to be open to whatever it is that the Lord will require of us as we celebrate the miracle of Bethlehem. Copyright © J. S. FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora

Congratulations to the “Praise and Glory Choir” of St. Augustine’s Church, for winning the First Prize of the first Choral Competition here at our church last Sunday. The second prize went to St. Thomas Moore (parish) Choir. Our Holy Name Choir and the San

Francisco Choir opened up the afternoon’s program, but were not part of the competition. We thank our Blessed Virgin Mary Shrine group, especially Esther Aure-Novero and Marissa Reyes, for or-ganizing the event, assisted by Rudy Asercion and Benny Capuyan and many volunteers. Upcoming events are posted in our website www.holynamesf.org. You can view our Christmas schedule, the Altar Server’s schedule and even the schedule of the priests cele-brating the masses. You can download forms for the Sacraments. You can also make your donations via our site. There is other infor-mation that might interest you. In the coming weeks though, we will have a different look on our website as we keep on improving it to make it more attractive and easier to use. We thank our parishion-er Anthony Tom for volunteering his time and expertise to do this exciting transformation of our website. WWW stands for World Wide Web. But for those who are prone to committing mistakes it stands for “What Went Wrong?” A man went to the library and said to the librarian: “I’m looking for a book.” “What book?” the librarian inquired. The man an-swered: “FACEBOOK!” A certain Nancy Clark from Virginia said that she had given up social media for the New Year and tried to make friends outside Facebook while applying the same principles. Every day, she walks down the street and tell passersby what she’s eaten, how she feels, what she did the night before, and what she will do to-morrow. Then she gives them pictures of her family, her dog, and her gardening. She also listens to their conversations and tells them she loves them. And it works. She already had three people following her—two police officers and a psychiatrist. Be careful about spending so much time on the internet or on your smart phones or even watching your television. You might just be interacting with machines and forgetting to interact with people around you. Spending time interacting within the family is im-portant, and therefore, togetherness shouldn’t be replaced by hav-ing phones out and television blasting. This is what Pope Francis stressed during a weekly General Audience in St. Peter’s square. The Holy Father began his catechesis pointing out that sitting at the table for the family dinner, and sharing our meal and the expe-riences of our day, is a fundamental image of togetherness and solidarity. He also said togetherness is a reliable "thermometer" to measure the "health" of the relationship.

"A family that almost never eats together, or is not at the table, but watching the TV or on their smartphones, is hardly a family," he said, lamenting when "the children at the table are attached to the computer, to the phone and do not listen to each other."

Thank You All Christmas is a perfect time to be grateful for God’s blessings. Holy Name of Jesus parish is so blessed with volunteers who make things happen, with gracious commitment and cheerful giving of time, talent and resources. We want to thank those who organized and planned the Mass for the sick and homebound parishioners. It was well-attended, in spite of the stormy weather on Dec. 10th. Thank you Susan Logan who coordi-nated the event. Jim Regan and all Lay Canossians, who pre-pared the place, picked up parishioners, donated food, and served, and did the clean-up afterwards. Roony and Terry Flaher-ty for preparing the beautiful environment for the Liturgy. Thanks to Pat Relampagos who planned the entertainment, with the “dance ensemble”. Thank you Lina Hidalgo and Rose Tang for your availability to “cover all the bases” whenever needed. For the liturgical celebrations, thanks to the music provided by Tri Nguyen and family, Madeline Morten, and Leo Nascimiento. To everyone, may God reward you for the Christmas spirit that enliv-en the heart of those most in need!

Ministries that will take a Christmas Break Please note that the following will resume on the dates designated: Religious Education – Sunday, Jan. 8 – 10:30AM -12:00 Noon; Bible Group-Lectio Divina – Tuesday, Jan. 10; Seniors – Thursday, Jan. 12, 11:30AM-3:00PM; RCICY – Breaking of the Word, Sunday, Jan. 8 at the 9:30AM Mass.; RCICY – Thursday, Jan. 12, 7:00-8:30PM; Lay Canossians – Sunday, Jan. 8 at 1:30-4:00PM. Please contact Sr. Cristina for more infor-mation.

Where Are They Going? In the early Church, only those who had been fully initiated into the faith were allowed to remain at Mass after the Liturgy of the Word. This is why for centuries the first part of the Mass was also known as the “Mass of the Catechumens.” In the spirit, many parishes today “dismiss” catechumens and candidates after the homily. They are not sent out to the street, however. Accompanied by a catechist, they go to reflect on the Sunday Scripture readings that have been proclaimed at Mass, in order to be more deeply formed in the faith. Please continue to pray for Leigh Anne, Diana, and Syd, as they continue their Journey of Faith towards the Easter sacraments.

Reflection: “Hold on to Jesus, Emmanuel, God-with-us. Look for

the signs of his presence in your life. Wrap yourself in his protection. Most of all, rejoice in it! God has sent his Son to you. You have a Savior who is always with you. Pray: Em-manuel, I step forth today rejoicing in your faithfulness and in the courage and freedom that you bring to my life.”
