Flanagan Center Feature Film: GOING MY WAY

Starring Bing Crosby Winner of 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, the unforgettable classic Going My Way lights up the screen as it warms the heart.

Best Actor winner Bing Crosby shines as Father O’Malley, a young priest new to an established but

financially flailing parish. When his philosophies conflict with those of curmudgeonly Father Fitzgibbon (Best Supporting actor winner Barry

Fitzgerald), the result is a timeless story of patience, compromise and—just maybe– understanding. Featuring an all-new digitally remas-tered picture and filled with mesmerizing music including the Academy Award—winning song “Swinging on a Star,” Going My Way exempli-

fies the silver screen at its golden best!

FAZtor ’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora The Kindergarteners and 5th Graders of our Holy Name School will assist us in our 9:30AM Sunday Mass this weekend. A special welcome to our

students and parents who will be participating in the Liturgy! As you know we do have a lot of families in the school who are non-Catholics and yet they attend our services and show a spirit of oneness with us. Some eventually decide to be in full com-munion with us, going through the process of Christian Initiation or the Sacrament of Baptism in the church. In fact, 10 students from our school will be baptized on Easter Sunday. And at the 9:30 AM mass this Sunday, we will also have the First Scrutiny for those who are undergoing the process of the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) - those who are to be welcomed into the fullness of the Catholic faith at the Easter Vigil in just a few weeks. February is almost over. This Sunday would have been the last day of February, but since we have Leap Year we have an extra day. Imagine another day in February is what makes the whole year a Leap Year! Well, it could also mean Leap Year because some of us, if not all, will have to make a Leap of Faith this year. It could be a Leap of Faith for those who will become Catholics on Easter. It could be a Leap of Faith for those who are joining the Knights of Columbus of our parish, who will hold the First Exemplification or the initial pro-cess of membership this Sunday at 3:30 PM in the Flanagan Cen-ter. If you are a male, 18 years old and above, you may want to take the leap with them. Our parish will make a leap of faith as we begin the Steward-ship Way of Life. In the next week or so, you will be receiving our new Newsletter. This year could also be a leap of faith for you as you make a major decision in life. You may not see the end of the tunnel, but keep on believing that you’ll get there and that a beautiful life awaits you. An atheist fell over a steep cliff and halfway down caught onto the single bush growing out of the hillside. He hung on for dear life. He could not possibly get back to the top. A hundred feet below was a heap of rocks. In desperation he turned his face toward heaven and shouted, “If there is a God, save me.” A thunderous voice then replied, “If you really believe in God, let go.” The atheist looked up, then looked down, and lost his nerve, “Is there anyone else up there?” he screamed. Don’t let the hurt, the fear, negative feelings, sickness, trials, and problems rob the beauty that lies ahead. The thorns do not take away the beauty of a rose. Focus on the beauty of the rose, not on its thorns. Keep believing! Keep trusting in God!

Parish Volunteer Opportunities: Altar Linens Ministry – This is an opportunity to serve our Church by washing the altar linens

used at Weekdays and Weekend Masses. This is not an ordinary washing of clothes, but it is direct contact with the Body and Blood of our Jesus Christ. The purificators and corporals used at Mass might have drops of Jesus’ Body and Blood. In view of this, a volunteer needs to be trained on how to handle these linens with respect. For details, please call Sr. Necy at 415-664-8590. Liturgical Ministries: Church Environment Eucharistic Ministers Lectors For details, please call the parish office at 415-664-8590

Gabriel Possenti’s baptismal name was Francis. Though it seemed that his call to the religious life was clear, he delayed in pur-suing his vocation, and his early life was filled with frivolity. Twice, during two different illnesses, he promised God he would en-ter the religious life. When he recovered the second time, he asked for admittance to the Jesuits, and was accepted, but he hesi-tated again. Finally, after the death of his favorite sister, he joined the Passionists and received the name Brother Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. The rest of his life was spent in attaining perfection through the ordinary activities of his everyday life. St. Ga-briel grew in love for the poor, for obedience and, as seen by his restraining of his fervor for practicing bodily mortifications, in accordance with his superiors’ counsels, for self-surrender in all things. St. Gabriel has been a Passionist only four years when he contracted tuberculosis. He was a model of patience amidst suffering, and he shunned the admiration of his peers. Just be-fore he died, he destroyed all of the notes in which he described spiritual favors he had received.

A MESSAGE FROM FATHER ARNOLD The 'Heart' month of February is almost over but not our

loving, our caring and understanding. Remember:

The heart that loves is always healthy. The heart that serves is always happy. The heart that cares is always strong.

I pray that God keeps you healthy, happy & strong. People with big hearts sympathize & people with small

hearts criticize. But people with God in their hearts simply give and share

their love. GOD BLESS US ALL!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Ash Wednesday is not observed by Eastern Chris-tians, perhaps because, at least in Orthodox practice, weekdays are not proper days for the Divine Liturgy. Typically, “Great Lent” has a bit of a prelude. On “Meatfare Sunday” the faithful have their last chance to eat meat for the entire period of Great Lent. A week later, “Cheesefare Sunday” has dairy on the menu for the last time until Pascha (Easter). At twilight on Cheesefare Sun-day, officially called “Sunday of Forgiveness.” the church gathers for “Forgiveness Vespers.” The faithful identify with Adam and Eve, forgiving one another in order to experience God’s forgiveness. The desire to set aside all bitterness, and to achieve harmony and reconciliation in the family and with one’s neighbors gives a remarkable energy to the transition into the days of penitence. At the end of the vespers liturgy, the décor of the church is changed to reflect the new season. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
