Sharing the futureAnnual Report 2010-2011

Bill Bryson, the “British” humorist, and I have never met, but we grew up a few blocks from each other in Des Moines, Iowa. I have no doubt that both of us probably heard a number of aphorisms of which we were mutually suspicious. “Eat your spinach, it will make you strong!” “This hurts me more than it hurts you.” “Clean your plate, think of the starving Bohemians.”

These sayings seemed to be delivered by pursed-lipped puritans who wouldn’t be happy until we were busily at work doing things from which we could derive zip pleasure!

But among the most curious aphorisms was a Christian one: “It is better to give than to receive.” What child believes this? Why should a child worry about somebody else getting anything when his own needs are so great?

When did I begin to discover the true meaning of this aphorism? Was it in the Boy Scouts when we older Den Chiefs helped Cub Scouts master the challenges of the exercises that led to the smile of new-found knowledge and accomplishments confirmed by Merit Badges? Or was it in Dowling High School when Serra Club members delivered Thanksgiving baskets and turkeys to elderly ladies whose fondest possession was a yellow newsprint photo of FDR?

Or was it after college and graduate school, when I began to teach undergraduates and bask in the shared warmth of their discoveries of how Christianity had grown and expressed itself first as a form of Judaism and then Greek philosophy and then Roman law?

Or was it when I discovered the joy of starting a small endowment funded by small speaking stipends whose income helped to provide seed money each year to stimulate the research of young faculty?

Somewhere in this process, I discovered that it really was “better to give than to receive.” It not only was true, it was also a deep and all too well-kept secret. It is more fun and more pleasurable to give to others than to receive. For in giving we receive far more than we could ever think possible.

The front cover to this Annual Report tells it all. Our own Cornell Meier, Regent, Trustee Emeritus, is surrounded by current students whose scholarships he has made possible. They are all bursting with joy! It is impossible to guess who is giving and who is receiving.

This entire issue sets forth a myriad of such stories of joy, from planned gifts to charitable trusts, from annual gifts to the gifts of time and knowledge. May you take joy from all of them!

Steve Borg ’86 and Betsy Fabro-Borg ’86 met at then-Holy Names College when they arrived on campus, he from Redwood City and she from Honolulu, as freshmen in 1982. The first 12 years after graduation for Betsy were focused on career and travel, especially to Hawaii, Australia, and Europe. She and Steve married in August of 1990 and when they started a family, Betsy was a pricing analyst in the wine industry. The past 13 years have been focused on her most challenging role as mother to their two children (Noel is 12 and Sebastian is 6), homemaker for the family, caretaker of an aging parent, and community volunteer. Steve has worked for the past 25 years in the bank-ing industry and is currently a senior vice president and corporate marketing director of California Bank & Trust, specializing in cross-cultural communications/marketing.

Steve credits HNU for providing him with the “four key success factors” that have helped him to build his career. “Holy Names taught me the importance of critical thinking; it prepared me to be a good communicator; it gave me a sense of responsibility – both socially and ethically; and it gave me a global perspective, in part because of my major and in part because of HNU’s diverse student body.” Critical thinking, communication, and thinking ethically “are the basis of the whole liberal arts tradition; people need more than technical skills,” Steve observed, grateful that HNU prepared him to excel in every way in today’s global marketplace.

Sharing through Planned Givingby Carol Sellman, SNJM, EdD

In 2007, Steve and Betsy informed HNU that they were remembering the University in their estate plans and they became members of the Marie-Rose Durocher Legacy Society. Steve and Betsy have encouraged younger alumnae to think about remember-ing the University in their estate plans: “Many people with children, young like ours, or older and in college, probably don’t think about the Legacy Society as an option because they are naturally focused primarily on the welfare of their children. There is a way to do both, even if the larger percentage of the estate goes to their heirs. Those children grow up, finish school, and move away and then there is an opportunity later in life to make the Legacy Society a bigger part of the plan.” Thank you, Steve and Betsy, for remembering your alma mater while providing for your family, as well!

Holy Names University has been blessed with a significant number of generous alumni and friends who, like Steve and Betsy, have informed us that they are remembering the University in their estate plans. Since its inception in 1995, the Marie-Rose Durocher Legacy Society has numbered over 130 donors, 82 of whom are still living.

Sr. Marie-Rose Durocher

Each year since 2005, the Sisters of the Holy Names who minister at Holy Names Uni-versity, in collaboration with the Director of Campus Ministry, have returned to the tra-dition of offering student retreats. Eighteen undergraduate students gathered at Villa Los Gatos on the weekend of February 10 – 12 with Director of Campus Ministry, Carrie Rehak, and Sisters Maureen Hester, Donna Maynard, Sophia Park, and Carol Sellman. The theme of this year’s retreat was “Reflecting On and Sharing Our Gifts.”

In addition to talks by students and Sisters, prayer, and reflection, there was time for sharing in small groups and with the entire group. Interspersed with these more serious elements were opportunities for cooking breakfast together (we had delicious scrambled eggs and French toast Saturday morning, thanks to several student chefs!), decorating our own t-shirts with designs or words reflecting our gifts, and time for relaxation. Lunch and dinner were shared with the Sisters who live at Los Gatos and the students were pleased to meet them and hear about the Sisters’ experiences at Holy Names University. The following quotation sums up the experience of all who participated in the weekend:

“I enjoyed talking with the sisters during meals and talking with fellow retreat members. I learned so much about God and myself. I re-established my self-worth and I know that I am loved by God, and I am beautiful.”
