TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

On Good Friday, at the heart of the Triduum, the commemoration of the Lord’s Passion is colored by sobriety and decorum, but this Thursday the mystery comes in a luminous celebration of Christ’s victory. In its deepest origins, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is the feast of a dedication of a church, since in the year 335 the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was dedicated on September 13, and on the following day the “true cross” discovered by St. Helena was brought outside to the faithful for veneration. It is a great feast of the Eastern Church, which often marks it by having the whole assembly prostrate themselves on the floor hon-oring the life-giving cross. At the core of the tradition is the quest of Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine, to acquire the cross and the nails of the Crucifixion from the ruins of Jerusalem. When she was satisfied that she had found them, thanks to the healing of a sick man whose body was placed on the cross, she had her son fund the building of the great basilica. The history of the relic is complicated, especially because it was carried off by invading Persians in the year 614 and “went missing” for fifteen years. Thursday’s feast does not celebrate the relic, but rather the life-giving cross from which salvation flows. It’s a good day to look around your house or office: Don’t those walls look bare without a cross? What better day to remedy that?

MEANING OF THE PALLIUM

Among the liturgical insignia of the Supreme Pontiff, one of the most evocative is the pallium made of white wool, symbol of the bishop as the good shepherd and, at the same time, of the Lamb Crucified for the salva-tion of the human race. As Pope Benedict XVI made reference to it in his homily for the Holy Mass inaugu-rating his Petrine ministry on 24 April 2005: “The sym-bolism of the pallium is even more concrete: the lamb's wool is meant to represent the lost, sick or weak sheep which the shepherd places on his shoulders and carries to the waters of life.” The pallium is the symbol of a special relationship with the Pope and expresses besides the power, that, in com-munion with the Church of Rome, the metropolitan acquires by right in his own jurisdiction. According to Canon Law (canon 437), a metropolitan must request the pallium within three months of his appointment and may wear it only in the territory of his own diocese and in the other dioceses of his ecclesiastical province The pallium of the metropolitan archbishops, in its pre-sent form, is a straight sash of material of almost five centimeters, made of white wool, curved at the center thus allowing it to rest on the shoulders over the Ro-man or Gothic chasuble and with two black flaps fall-ing in front and behind, so that, seen either from the front or from behind, the vestment reminds one of the letter "Y." It is decorated with six crosses of black silk, one on each end and four on the incurvature, and is decorated in front and on the back, with three pins made of gold and jewels (acicula). The different form of the papal pallium with respect to that of the metro-politans makes clear the diversity of jurisdiction signi-fied by the pallium.

GOD’S WATCHERS In the ancient world watchmen were extremely important people. They kept communities safe, and were there to alert them to any impending danger or attack. Before locks, alarms, and security systems, watchmen were the protectors, the safety measure. So when the Lord charges Ezekiel as a watchman today, it is a weighty charge. So weighty, we learn, that if Ezekiel fails to sound the alarm for those around him and they perish in a state of wickedness, Ezekiel will be held responsible! This profound connection between God’s will on earth and in heaven is repeated in today’s Gospel, where Jesus instructs us that we are to be the security force, the watchers placed on alert that nowhere in the Body of Christ, the church, will there be any two members of the one Body who are not reconciled. Scripture tells us that Jesus reconciled all things in heaven and on earth through the blood of his cross. But we are given the mission to continue that reconcilia-tion on earth as in heaven through our ceaseless efforts to be, as Paul would write, ambassadors of reconciliation. Let us not get too comfortable thinking that we are responsible only for keeping our own lives from the path of wickedness and disagreement. We are also held accountable for the lives of the members of Christ’s body around us.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Durante todo el mes de septiembre se celebra el mes de la herencia hispana. Esta fiesta responde a una presencia hispana que tiene su inicio con la llegada de los españoles a la Florida en 1513, hace 501 años. Los españoles estuvie-ron en 24 de los ahora 50 estados de Estados Unidos. Eventualmente, como bien sabemos, Florida, el Suroeste y Puerto Rico pasaron a manos de los estadounidenses. Desde nuestra incorporación a este país hemos ido creciendo en pre-sencia e influencia. La primera obra literaria en español publicada en EE. UU., fue un sermón de don José Agustín Ca-ballero en 1804. En 1808 inició la prensa hispana en EE. UU. con el periódico El Misisipi en Nueva Orleáns. Este fue el primero de los medios de comunicación en español en esta nación. En 1822 se eligió el primer político Hispano co-mo representante estatal de Florida. En 1865 la primera oficina para la pastoral católica entre los hispanos nombró al sacerdote Gabriel Serrano pastor hispanorium (pastor de los hispanos) en San Francisco, California. En 1970 el sacer-dote Patricio Flores fue el primer hispano en ser consagrado como Obispo en y para Estados Unidos. En 1972 celebra-mos el Primer Encuentro Nacional de Católicos Hispanos donde nos auto nominamos un pueblo en marcha. Y segui-mos caminando.

CENTINELAS DE DIOS

En el mundo de la antigüedad los centinelas eran gente de gran importancia. Mantenían la seguridad de las comuni-dades y su deber era alertarles sobre cualquier peligro o ataque inminente. Antes de que hubiera cerrojos, sistemas de alarma y seguridad, los centinelas eran los protectores, la medida de seguridad. Así que cuando hoy el Señor le encarga a Ezequiel ser centinela, es un cargo de peso. Tan pesado, se nos hace conocer, que si Ezequiel falla y no da la voz de alarma a los que le rodean y ellos mueren en estado de maldad, ¡Ezequiel será el responsable! Este profundo vínculo entre la voluntad de Dios en la tierra y en el cielo se repite en el Evangelio de hoy, donde Jesús nos instruye que tene-mos que ser la fuerza de seguridad, los centinelas colocados en estado de alerta para que en ninguna parte del Cuerpo de Cristo, la Iglesia, haya dos miembros del único Cuerpo que no estén reconciliados. La Sagrada Escritura nos dice que Jesús reconcilió todas las cosas en el cielo y en la tierra mediante la sangre de su cruz. Pero se nos da la misión de conti-nuar esa reconciliación en la tierra por medio de nuestros incesantes esfuerzos de ser, como escribiera Pablo, embajado-res de reconciliación. No nos quedemos muy cómodos pensando que nuestra única responsabilidad es mantenernos fuera del camino de la maldad y la discordia. También hemos de responder por la vida de los miembros de Cristo que nos ro-dean.
