MUSIC AT THE LITURGIES

So that we may better actively participate in the holy sacrifice of the Mass, please refer to the

printed Order of Mass, which contains the spo-ken responses and all music for the Mass.

These are available at the door as you enter the Church each week. Please return the Order of

Mass to the bins at the door as you leave so that they may be used for the next Mass.

READINGS: We Celebrate Pg. 59

Wait for the LORD with courage;

be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD.

— Psalm 27:14

Bulletin Deadline: 4pm Thursday-week prior

Question of the Week

How do I need to “step outside” myself to fulfill my baptismal mission? To what “periphery” in my world do I need to bring Christ’s peaceable, liberating love?

TYPOGRAPHY

LIBERATION AND REFORM While you might have to reach for an atlas to determine that Isaiah is speaking about Galilee, today’s first reading (part of which was read at Christmas) is prophetic of Jesus’ future minis-try in that province. The light that brings salvation and rejoicing is, ultimately, Christ. Liberation is the theme: liberation from both ignorance (“darkness”) and sin (the “yoke”). As Isaiah identifies a place, so Paul describes an attitude: the attitude that develops, even among good people, of equating their own will with the common good. This always brings dis-sension, and so it has done in Corinth. Paul will not allow this; we are all members of “Christ’s party.” The gospel is not to di-vide us. Matthew quotes from Isaiah in today’s Gospel, presenting Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecies. The theme is “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). To spread this message, Jesus begins to select disciples, four of whom we meet today: Peter, Andrew, James, and John.

Reflecting on God’s Word

Imagine a large group of travelers, lost in the midst of a dense forest on a starless black night. They can-not see the path; they cannot even see each other. Little by little they wander in different directions, trying des-perately to find their way forward through the immense trees, all the while spreading further and further apart. Suddenly a bright white lantern shines from the edge of the forest. Their fear flees with the darkness. As they head toward the light they rejoin one another and rejoice to discover the one way out of the forest. The imagery of light in the darkness threads its way through the Sundays of Ordinary Time between Christmas and Lent. It reminds us that the Light of the World, whose dawning we celebrated during the Advent/Christmas season, is the same light of Christ whose flame will purify and enlighten us during Lent and enkindle the fire of the Holy Spirit in us during the fifty days of Easter. This week our first reading likens the salvation of the “District of the Gentiles” to light dispelling dark-ness, anguish, and gloom. Matthew’s Gospel characterizes Jesus as a light arising in “Galilee of the Gentiles,” beckoning the fishermen to join together in following him along the way. Paul exhorts us to remain united on the one way that follows the light of our one and only Lord, Jesus Christ.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The burdens that were once laid upon the people have been vanquished (Isaiah 8:23 — 9:3). Psalm — The Lord is my light and my salvation (Psalm 27). Second Reading — Paul exhorts the believers at Corinth: As there is one Christ, so too must there be no divisions among you. (1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17). Gospel — After calling his first disciples, Jesus goes throughout Galilee teaching, proclaiming the gospel, and curing the people (Matthew 4:12-23 [12-17]).

CATHOLICISM 101 – 193 Perhaps it would be a good thing for us to continue this week along the same line of thought we started last week. This is the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time; all things Christ-mas are now gone. Decorations stored, tree re-boxed or thrown out, house cleaned and re-organized without all the “stuff” and we are taking a break from all the activity of the Christmas Season. Christmas, however, is never actually over. We should all keep Christ-mas alive in our hearts every day of the year. As Catholic Christians, we all know that the Easter Vigil is the most important Mass of the entire year; the Roman Missal states that the Easter Vigil is “the greatest and most noble of all Solemnities” The death of Jesus for-gave our sins and His Resurrection defeated our death and gives us the opportunity for eternal life. But we must be aware that in order for Jesus to sacrifice His Life for us, He had to become man and He willingly did that by being born as any child is born and He be-came just like us in every way but sin. That is a gift of Love unprecedented and unmatcha-ble but we must strive to give the same love to those around us and we must always acknowledge that Christmas is a gift of love we should all keep every hour of every day and honor that gift by giving ourselves to our Father in the way we bear witness for Him.

Holy Rosary School is very proud of our

monthly rosary. After the Friday All School Mass, once a month, we pray the Rosary together. The Ro-sary is lead by a different grade each month. This month the Rosary was lead by 6th grade students. Six student volunteers pray a decade each with a student that begins the prayers. It is amazing to be in the church with the entire student body praying together! What a gift for us in our Catholic school to be able to pray together in this way. If you'd like to join us next month the 5th grade students are leading the Rosary on Friday, February 10th, immediately following the 8:15 Mass.

Sacramental Preparation Guidelines 1. Baptism (for infants up to six years of age) All parents must participate in the Parish infant baptismal preparation program before a Baptism can be performed. Please contact Rayna Cobb to schedule an appointment. At least one month notice is required for scheduling Baptisms.

† For first time Parents: This session is required before a Baptism may be scheduled.

† For parents of more than one child: Please, schedule a meeting with the Pastor to discuss requirements for baptismal preparation.

2. Rites of Christian Initiation (R.C.I.A.) All individuals six years of age and older who wish to be initiated into the Roman Catholic Community participate in special formational meetings, instruction and prescribed rites that lead to initiation at the Easter Vigil for most or other times, depending on particular circumstances. Separate tracts are established for children and adults. Contact the parish office at any time during the year for more information. 3. First Eucharist, Confirmation, First Penance It is the policy of the Diocese of Memphis that any child wanting to celebrate the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Confirmation and/or Penance must be enrolled in a parish-based catechetical program for one year prior to beginning preparation for the sacraments. We recognize and support parents as the primary educators of their children in matters of faith but also acknowledge that the local church has the responsibility of ensuring the proper catechetical formation of those who desire the Church's sacraments. 4. Matrimony Please call the parish office and schedule an appointment with the pastor at least five months in advance of the proposed wedding date. Church Law as well as diocesan and parish policy require that certain guidelines be met before a wedding may be scheduled. 5. Christian Burial Please call the parish office before making funeral arrangements to confirm the availability of the church and a priest or deacon if a Funeral Mass is to be celebrated. 6. Ministry to the Sick When a family member is hospitalized, call the parish office to request prayers and to arrange for a pastoral visit. According to the "Patient Privacy Act," it is the patient's and patient's family's responsibility to provide the patient's room number if a pastoral visit is desired.

Friday is a universal day of penance: abstain from all meat.

Holy Rosary Parish Mission Statement It is the mission of the People of God gathered together under the patronage of Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary, to proclaim the Good News of Salvation and to invite others to know the Lord Jesus Christ and adopt a life of discipleship for his glory. This is accomplished by: † Calling members of the Church to the recognition that we

are a pilgrim people who are both called to the Eucharist and sent from it with the knowledge and joy that God's promises to us are being fulfilled;

† Promoting Christian Stewardship as a way of life that enlivens each disciple, regardless of age, to satisfy her or his hunger to worship God in thought, word and deed through generous gifts of time, talent and treasure;

† Inspiring the People of God to grow in their faith by offering ample age-appropriate educational opportunities based on scripture, interpersonal relationships, peace and justice, and personal improvement; and

† Seeking justice for all God's children in the proclamation of hope through concrete actions.
