Readings for the Week

Hi all: With all the hot weather, we certainly know that we are in

the throes of summer! I know I have written a lot the last few

months about understanding how we are taking the summer off

from doing new ministries. Well it’s time to write about how we

can begin to serve our parish once again. Here is your chance !!!!!!!

Harvest Faire is 8 weeks away and there is so much that needs

to be done by our parishioners. I know that we often ask for money

and I am going to do it one more time. Because of the new health

department requirements we need a special set-up for the Harvest

Faire this year, and like everything in life it’s going to cost us mon-

ey. BUT, you can help us!!! We need parishioners to sponsor

booths for $200 in order for us to provide the correct kind of

screening and hand washing stations for the booths. Or you could

donate $150 for new canopies for the game area. Now I know this

is a lot of money but maybe you know of another family who might

be interested in partnering with you. If you provide a booth spon-

sorship, your name will go on the booth. If you pay for a canopy

your name will be on our thank-you board.

Over the next few weeks we will be publishing a list of supplies

that parishioners can donate. These will be such things as paper

plates, napkins, cups and more. Watch for the bulletin insert which

will tell you what we need. If we can cover our overhead in ad-

vance our profits will increase. We need to remember that this is

our largest fund raiser for our parish each year as well as being our

greatest community-building event.

Now...you might not have extra money but maybe you have time.

We need you to help with the Country Store, the Candy Booth, or

the games in the Midway. If you have time the weekend of the

Faire please call me at the rectory 757-4020 and leave your name

and phone number. The Country Store can use all handmade items.

If you are crafty, please donate something. We are trying to have

more handmade items this year.

These might not be considered parish ministries but they are oppor-

tunities of service that will help all of us. I will be offering more

suggestions during the next few weeks.

Our unsung heroes this week are Allen Espinole and John Glick,

our past Music Directors, who came back last weekend to cover the

music for the Masses. Everyone was happy to see them!

Have a good week. I will be back in the office the first of August.

Come by or call me if you can be a part of this parish-wide service

project.

Blessings, Jackie

Parish theme for this year: Be Disciples. Make Disciples.

Why a Pastor Should Be Installed? Canon 519 of the Code of Canon Law of the Catholic Church

describes the parochus: “The parochus is the proper pastor of the

parish entrusted to him, exercising the pastoral care of the com-

munity committed to him under the authority of the diocesan

bishop in whose ministry of Christ he has been called to share,

so that for that same community he carries out the functions of

teaching, sanctifying, and governing. . ..”

How we receive office— and some variations Canon 523 stipu-

lates that the diocesan bishop appoints the parochus (cf 5 Canon

525). Theologically, the parochus partakes in the priesthood of

Christ of the diocesan bishop. Canon 526 stipulates that one

physical person is to be appointed parochus of one parish. When

we become pastors, we need to do two things: First: we make

a profession of faith and take an oath of loyalty, according to

the requirement of Canon 833.6 --although failure to do so

does not affect the validity of our tenure of office. Next: we take

possession of the office: the Latin here is “possessionem ca-

pire” in a ceremony before the Ordinary of the Place

(bishop, Vicar General, Episcopal Vicar) or a priest delegat-

ed by one of these. Please note the following: 1. taking pos-

session is required for a priest to hold the office of parochus.

“Installation” is done to mufflers by Midas and to dishwashers

by Sears. Pastors are not “installed”: they take possession of

their office. Third, how we are to serve in office: the pastor as

householder, and as minister of word and sacrament. The paro-

chus is a householder. As such, he needs to have a residence

within his parish (Canon 533) • As a householder, he is required

to celebrate a Mass for the people of his parish (or parishes) on

each Sunday and holy day of obligation. (534) • As a household-

er he is required to keep parish records, especially sacramental

records, and to maintain the parish seal that testifies to the au-

thenticity of facts and acts. (535) More than just a householder,

the parochus is minister of word and sacrament. Canon 528

points out that a parochus is to collaborate with the lay members

of the Christian faithful by “fostering their associations for the

purposes of religion” 2. that he is to be in communion with bish-

op and presbyterium – and that he is to work so that the faithful

have concern for parochial communion, consider themselves

members of the diocese and of the Church Universal, and partic-

ipate in and sustain efforts to promote this same communion.

B. The Autonomy of the Parochus Canon 532 is very important.

It stipulates that, despite the requirement for ecclesiastical com-

munion, the parochus “personam gerit” –moves the juridic per-

son of the parish in all its juridic affairs. The bishop can have

oversight; his permission can be required for the spending of

money or the sale of property. But it is the parochus who is the

CEO of the parish or parishes in which he holds office.

C. Mandated Collaboration by the Parochus It is important to

emphasize that the parochus does not exercise his role of CEO,

of office-holder, of householder, on his own. He needs assis-

tance. Moreover, as a member 8 of Christ’s faithful himself, he

needs to co-opt other members of Christ’s faithful to make the

parish household a vibrant actuation of Christian communion.

Cómo recibimos Oficina- y algunas variaciones Canon 523

Housing Needed Santa Maria Church of Orinda is looking for housing for their

10-person Afghanistan family. They are currently being housed

in Oakland but the rent is too expensive and they wish to move.

Their first choice is to find a house to rent, but an apartment

would be fine, too. They need it to be at least 1200-1500 SF

with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, with a rental rate of no more

than $2700/month.

The parish can vouch for the family as they have been assisting

them since they came in November 2017. They are a lovely

family, no pets or smokers, very neat and organized and won-

derful housekeepers.

Please let us know if any of your parishioners have a rental or

know of a rental that would accommodate this lovely fami-

ly. Contact: GAIL GABRIEL at 510-303-0306 if you have any

questions or for information.

The Rosary Confraternity The Rosary Confraternity is a group of

Christian men and women who are dedi-

cated to recite the Rosary three times a

week. Members of the Confraternity

join an endless stream of Christians who

are devoted to Mary and her Son. Pope

Leo XIII said in his encyclical on the

Confraternity, “whenever a person ful-

fills his obligation of reciting the Rosary

according to the rule of the Confraterni-

ty, he includes in his intentions all its

members, and they in turn render him

the same service many times over.”

against you” – St. John Bosco

The Adoration Chapel has been such a

blessing to our Church. The amount of

grace received and prayers made are

heartwarming. Thank you Holy Rosary

Church.

We wish to have more adorers. 1 hour a

week is a commitment, but do not be

afraid of commitment. The amount you

will receive back from your generosity

of time in the Chapel could never be met

in any other way. Let us grow in our

prayerful lives. Call 925-783-6841 to
