Mass Intentions

Mass Intention for “People of the Parish”

Question: Every week in our bulletin I see a Mass on Sunday for the people of the parish. I just recently noticed it in another church as well. Is it there to fill in an intention, or is someone requesting it every week?

Answer: The pastor of a parish is charged with the well-being of the community. There are many aspects of this task, including the physical, spiritual and social concerns of maintaining and building a community of faith. Each week, by church law, the pastor offers Mass on Sunday for the people of the parish. It is a tangible and practical way that the pastor prays for those entrusted to his care. No one requests it, nor is it offered only when there is an open intention. The spiritual needs of the people are the primary concern of the pastor. His prayer for them is the first way he cares for them.

NOVEMBER 5TH - 11TH God has called each one of us to holiness and to a vocation as either a single person, married, or a

special call to be a priest or religious brother or sister. One of the most important things we can do is

seriously discern what God is calling us to do with our life, because when we follow that path we will be

the most fulfilled. Parents, friends, and relatives can play a crucial role in supporting a person in their

discernment. If you know a young person who has the qualities and character that you see in priests or

religious, let them know! Tell them you will pray for them. Perhaps that is the confirmation they need

to explore their vocation. God’s call is not silent, but often we are not listening.

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons, and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help others to respond generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth and young adults. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Please pray for our Holy Spirit Seminarians and all discerning a vocation to the priesthood or consecrated religious life. (Pictured left to right: Thomas Maddock, Zach Harris, AVI, Geoffrey Calvert, Danny Mauro, and Sister Mary Jesus Mauro).

Please stop b y the Knights of Columbus table after all weekend Masses to by religious greeting cards. Proceeds from the sales go to support our Holy Spirit Seminarians.

Feast of the

Dedication of the

Lateran Basilica

N o v e m b e r 9 t h

November 9 is the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome. What is the significance of this feast? Every diocese has a mother church, the bishop's cathedral where the diocesan church gathers and celebrates. The cathedral is the seat of the bishop's authority over the diocese. That authority is intended to be one of service to God's people, shepherding and guiding them in a truly pastoral mode. The pope is first and foremost the bishop of Rome, as well as the head of the Roman Catholic Church. St. John Lateran is his cathedral, and its prominence derives from that reality. St. John Lateran cathedral traces its origins to Constantine who converted a portion of the Laterani family palace into a church, and gave it to Pope Sylvester (314-335) as the papal church and residence. It became known as the cathedral of the pope, and its facade's inscription refers to it as "the Mother and Head of all Churches, in the City and of the World." The universal celebration of this feast stresses the unity among Roman Catholics, as they unite themselves with the chair of Peter. The Lateran portion of the name refers to the family who donated the land. St. John refers to the two saints in whose honor the church is dedicated, John the Baptist and John the Evangelist.

Book of Rem em brance The book of remembrance is placed in the Narthex during the month of NOVEMBER. This book is for parishioners who wish to add the names of their deceased loved ones. We will pray for those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith.

November 5, 2017 Marriage Minute

Do you have unrealistic expectations about what marriage is supposed to be like? Of course we have a right to expect certain things from our spouse, such as time, attention, affection and help. But we can get into trouble

when we expect things that aren’t reasonable. For instance: You expect that he can fix things (because your dad did). You expect her to keep the house as clean as she did before

you had 3 kids. You expect your spouse to react the way that you would, even

though he is a totally unique person! These expectations “tie up heavy burdens” for our spouses to shoulder. Many of our marriage enrichments teach skills that help spouses approach these expectations in a healthy way. Sign up today at :

LITURGICAL MINISTRIES: NOVEMBER 11TH & 12TH

Everyday Stewardship I remember attending Catholic school growing up and every year having to write a report on a saint. We were told that these people of faith were role models for us in our Christian journey. Even though they were real people, they always seemed to me to be larger than life. When I was younger I never thought I could become just like them. Now that I am older, I realize that we are all, in fact, called to be just like them. Holiness is not something reserved for those in a book of saints. It is the goal of all intentional disciples living as good stewards. However, it takes commitment to achieve holiness. It also requires us to live mindfully and be continually aware of how God is moving in our lives. You may never have thought about a stewardship way of life as a pathway to sainthood, but if you take the time to read the lives of saints you will see how these heroes truly cultivated the gifts God had given them and gave them back with increase to God. You will encounter stories of outreach to the poor, comforting the distressed, and befriending the lonely. And you will begin to see the parallel between what these great disciples did in their lives with the simple responses to God’s call in your life. The Church may never formally canonize you, but there will be those whose paths you cross that will bear witness to the fact that at least for a moment they caught a glimpse of what could have been a living saint. —Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
