If something or someone is interfering with our love of God and others, we have to have the willingness to put aside. Clinging to anything or anyone is against the way of life in Christ. Detachment is a part of all great spiritual traditions. The great Buddhist holy man, Nagarjuna moved around na- ked except for a loincloth and, strangely, a golden begging bowl, which had been given to him by the king, who was his disciple. One night he was about to lie down to sleep among the ruins of an ancient monastery when he noticed a thief lurking behind one of the columns. “Here take this,” said Nagarjuna , holding out the golden begging bowl. “ That way you won’t disturb me once I have fallen asleep.” The thief eagerly grabbed the bowl and made off – only to return the next morning with the bowl and a request. He said, “When you gave away this bowl so freely last night, you made me feel very poor. Teach me how to acquire the riches that make this kind of lighthearted detachment possible.” A beggar with a golden begging bowl is an interesting image. The bowl is not bad in and of itself. Difficulties arise not because we have things, but when our relationship with our possessions becomes attachment. This happens when we make them into more than objects by seeing them as in some way an essential part of our very self. When we view created things in terms of our relationship to God, they can be regarded simultaneously as gifts from a loving creator, the means to attaining union with the Lord, or possible snares that retard our spiritual progress. It’s important to see things and people in the proper light. There’s no doubt that most of us will be struggling with attachment and detachment for all of our lives. People will come into our lives who will want to possess us in an unhealthy way. They will demand more than we are able to give. If we try to give more than we have, we end up in a terrible situation of almost being possessed by another human being. This is not friendship or love. It is slavery. And so with new possessions that will come our way. Will we possess them or will they possess us? Those who join religious orders in our Church take a vow of poverty. They make this commitment as a concrete way of freeing themselves to more fully serve Christ. In our own lives, a spirit of poverty can free us to become more available for service to others. We leave our clinging to things and people so that we can be free to follow Christ more closely.

In today’s Gospel Jesus warns us that we are not allowed to cling to anything, or anyone for that matter, as if that thing or that person had the power to save us. If something or someone is interfering with our love of God and others, we have to have the willingness to put aside. Clinging to anything or anyone is against the way of life in Christ.

Detachment is a part of all great spiritual traditions. The great Buddhist holy man, Nagarjuna moved around na-ked except for a loincloth and, strangely, a golden begging bowl, which had been given to him by the king, who was his disciple.

One night he was about to lie down to sleep among the ruins of an ancient monastery when he noticed a thief lurking behind one of the columns. “Here take this,” said Nagarjuna , holding out the golden begging bowl. “That way you won’t disturb me once I have fallen asleep.”

The thief eagerly grabbed the bowl and made off – only to return the next morning with the bowl and a request. He said, “When you gave away this bowl so freely last night, you made me feel very poor. Teach me how to acquire the riches that make this kind of lighthearted detachment possible.”

A beggar with a golden begging bowl is an interesting image.

“PRAYER: THE FAITH PRAYED”

This year, the Church will celebrate National Catechetical Sunday on Sept. 18, and will focus on the theme "Prayer: The Faith Prayed." On this day, the many men and women who serve in the Church’s catechetical ministries are recognized and affirmed for sharing their gift of faith with others. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportuni-ty for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. So take a moment on the 18th to say “THANK YOU” to your child’s catechist for taking on such a commitment. Catechists, Youth Mentors & RCIA Team members, you and your immediate family are cordially invited to an Appreciation Brunch, in your honor, from 8:30-11:15 a.m. in the dining room prepared by our own Knights of Columbus.

CHILDREN’S FAITH FORMATION CLASSES

ARE OFFICIALLY IN SESSION AS OF SUNDAY, AUG. 28!

If you missed Parent Orientation, please stop by the front desk and pick up a packet of important

information about the 2016-2017 Faith Formation year including all the great special events and activities planned for the year. And, if you haven’t yet registered your children for Faith Formation, it’s not too late! You can pick up registration paperwork 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday-Thursday, at the Community Center front desk or on Sunday mornings during Faith Formation. We are closed from 12:00 Noon -1:00 p.m. for lunch…

The deadline for Faith Formation registration for the 2016-2017 year is NEXT Sunday, Sept. 11 for children wishing to enroll in our sacramental preparation program and Sunday, Sept. 18 for children needing to fulfill the one-year attendance requirement (that’s first grade and up). After that, classes will be officially closed except for PK3, PK4 and Kindergarten or those who have already celebrated sacraments (pending room availability).

Additionally, if you registered during the week of Aug. 22 or later, your children will be on class rosters beginning with the Sept. 11 class. Those rosters will be posted outside classroom doors or stop by the front desk for class assignments.

Also, don’t forget that with the start of the Faith Formation year, the familiar orange safety cones and locked gate will be in

place. For safety’s sake, PLEASE DON’T MOVE THE CONES! They are there to

ensure the safe passage of both the children and parishioners, as they move from the Church to the Community Center and vice versa. And please be kind to our Parking Lot Attendants who are here to assist safe vehicular traffic. Thanking you in advance!
