    From the Pastor’s Desk…

    In understanding today’s Gospel, some may choose to focus on the “inappropriate” dress the one wedding guest comes wearing, which eventually gets him thrown out of the banquet hall. Such a discussion usually raises hackles among many who always have chosen more formal, event-appropriate attire as opposed to those whose whole wardrobe is more relaxed and less formal. In today’s society, it is hard to come to an agreement about that topic!

    Instead, I would like to emphasize the opening lines of the Gospel. “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast… to summon the invited guests but they refused to come… some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business…” Some of us are beset with many invitations and with too many planned activities, which get in the way. An invitation should always be considered an honor, a sign of inclusion, a sign that one’s presence is wanted.

    God has invited all of us to take our place in the Kingdom. God invites us today to be his presence to others. God invites us to be the visible sign of mercy, generosity, and compassion in an oftentimes cruel and indifferent world. God’s invitation may not always be for the enjoyment of good things and good times. God also challenges us, calls us out of our complacency, invites us to bear the crosses of others. The Gospel draws our attention today to divine invitations in our lives that we may be choosing to ignore.

    Have a good week!Fr. Bill Arnold

    Hospital Visits – Once again, an important reminder: If you become hospitalized, please notify the parish office at St. Philip or Holy Spirit. If you are unable to do this yourself, make sure a family member or friend knows to call the parish office. We have had parishioners in the hospital, and only found out after the hospital stay was over. We are now permitted to do limited visitations at local hospitals.

    wonderful job of teaching, organizing, and maintaining a safe learning environment for everyone. I am so proud of the teachers and staff at Holy Spirit School. Next Week is World Mission Sunday: We are called to be part of the Church’s missionary efforts, supporting mission priests, religious Sisters and Brothers, and lay catechists who provide service to those in need. As Catholics around the world gather around the table of the Lord, let us pray for the Church’s worldwide missionary work, and offer financial help through The Society for the Propagation of the Faith for vulnerable communities throughout Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands.

    Please remember in your prayers all the sick, homebound and/or recovering from St. Philip and Holy Spirit Parishes, especially Ed Bracken, Ed & Kay Bramer, Robert & Lu Cudak, Mary Dattilo, JoAn Dumas, Christine Krites, Kim Marsh, Lisa Rundag, and Cathy Walker, and for those in our parishes coping with physical and mental conditions.

    Confessions at Holy Spirit: Every Thursday evening, confessions are held at Holy Spirit Church from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Either Fr. Bill Arnold or Fr. Mike Nimocks will be hearing these confessions. Keep a few points in mind.

    October is Respect Life Month. No single issue is more identified with Catholic belief in our nation today than is respect for all human life. We chose to live a faith which recognizes the dignity and worth of every human life – born and unborn. The horizon of this belief must be broad, however, and our vision far-reaching. Respect for life begins, certainly, with sacred regard for the yet to be born life in the womb, from the moment of conception. Life is a sacred gift from God, entrusted to our love and care. This is a “bedrock” belief, but it does not end there. We are a Church that must be spokesperson and defender of life whenever and wherever its value and beauty have been denied and neglected. That includes:

    • Compassion for the weak, sick, and elderly, as well as for the handicapped and mentally challenged;

    • Responsibility for the poor and homeless, as well as the immigrants and unwanted in our midst;

    • A rejection of war, racism, and violence in all its forms, which damages the lives and communities of so many today, which includes capital punishment;

    • Respect for the beauty of nature and the vineyard of the Lord, and protection for its resources for the benefit of all humanity;

    • Special concern for the weakest among us, children especially. They simply can’t defend themselves.

    Parishioners of St. Philip and Holy Spirit! Both parishes are open for those who wish to attend Mass. Attendance is voluntary. The Bishops of Ohio have extended the dispensation to attend Mass until further notice. Anyone at high risk or who shows any symptoms of illness, should remain at home.• You are asked to wear a mask. • Sanitize your hands upon entering Church.• You will be directed to a pew. Assigned seating.• No moving around during Mass.• No one will be admitted late.• Envelopes may be placed in a basket as you exit.• At end of Mass, an orderly dismissal.• Use hand sanitizer when leaving Church.• All entry to Church through the bell tower door or elevator

    door.• Please, no conversation/socializing inside Church.

    Next Saturday, October 17, 4:00 p.m. at St. Philip (call for a reservation: 614-237-1671)

    Next Sunday, October 18, 9:00 a.m. at St. Philip (call for a reservation: 614-237-1671)

  • Are you or is someone you know: curious about the Catholic faith? Interested in becoming Catholic? Baptized Catholic as a child, but never received the Sacraments of Confirmation and the Eucharist? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

    (RCIA) is the process through which adults join the Catholic Church. The first step in this process is a period of inquiry, which is an opportunity to learn more about our parish community, our Catholic faith, and our God. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our RCIA sessions will take place online using the Zoom teleconferencing system. Our first RCIA session took place on September 29th. Our next session will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13th. All are welcome to participate! This is also a great opportunity for lifelong Catholics to brush up on their faith. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact [email protected] for login information.

    Prayer in Time of Pandemic by Fr. Joseph Veneroso, M.M.

    Save us, Savior of the world! Let your mercy cover the earth as sunlight fills the skies.

    May these days of disease, uncertainty and fear never overshadow Your call to be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers.

    Keep us safe, O Lord, not only from physical illness and danger but also from spiritual sicknesses of hatred, envy, greed and apathy.

    Grant that this time of testing teaches us to appreciate our health, our faith, our friends and family, but most of all, our life.

    Into Your most merciful hands we commend the souls of the dead and beg Your blessing on the sick.

    Open our hearts to Your love and forgiveness and our eyes to Your diving image in all peoples at all times.

    May we never tire of serving You. Amen.
