Have you ever felt that when Christmas comes around that you’re just not ready? Of all the liturgical seasons of the year, Advent is certainly the most stressful and it may be the most confusing. Catholics seem to have a good grasp of Christmas, Lent, and Easter. But what is the

deeper meaning of Advent? And how can understanding this season help us

better prepare for Christmas?

In this series, Dr. Brant Pitre show how a deeper understanding of the ancient Jewish prophecies of the Messiah can help unlock the hidden meanings

of the season of Advent.

October is Reverence for Life month in the Archdiocese of Regina—

promoting the dignity of the human person.

Pope Francis has spoken about “throwaway culture” as a way of drawing attention to the disregard for human life as expressed in many different life issues. From abortion and euthanasia to refugees and migrants to capital punishment to victims of violence and abuse to human trafficking to racism, at the heart of the problem lies a willingness to treat human beings, made in

the image and likeness of God, as disposable.

A Catholic worldview brings into focus the deep connections between these issues that are so often artificially divided up by our contemporary political ideologies. To that end, we will be featuring pieces each workday that try to show the interconnectedness of various life issues while plumbing the

deeper logic relating them to one another.

This year we were very fortunate that Dr. Charles Camosy visited our Arch-diocese during Reverence for Life month to deliver the inaugural Jesuit Lecture at Campion College on October 16. His theme, also the title of his most recent book, is “Resisting Throwaway Culture.” Dr. Brett Salkeld and Deacon Eric Gurash have recorded 4 Thinking Faith! podcasts with Dr.

Camosy available on the Archdiocese website.

Listen to the podcasts. Deepen your own appreciation of the Gospel of Life!

Our new logo was inspired by the beauty of

the stained glass of our churches. The four shapes create between them a cross, symbol of our faith. Yellow, blue and red are the colours of the archdioce-san coat of arms. Together they embrace the green (lower left)—colour of our province and of hope. (colour version online).

TF162: Resisting Throwaway Culture with Dr. Charlie Camosy - Part 4In our fourth and final chat with Dr. Charles Camosy of Fordham University, we examine issues of ecology, ethical farming, poverty, and government-sanctioned violence. How does our #throwawayculture infect each of

these areas and can a consistent life ethic provide a holistic antidote? The doctor is in, this week on Thinking Faith!http://thinkingfaith.libsyn.com/tf162-resisting-throwaway-culture-with-dr-charlie-camosy-part-4

Archbishop’s Appeal In Jesus’ Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, the Pharisee exhibits all the good and respectable qualities. The Tax Collector is just the opposite, both a traitor of his people and a greedy cheat who takes more than his due. But God accepts the prayer of the Tax Collector and not the Pharisee’s. Why? Because the Pharisee is busy praising his own goodness and is concerned only about his opinion of himself. The Tax Collector, knowing what sort of person he is, asks God for mercy and forgiveness. In the reading from 2 Timothy, St. Paul also mentions some of his sufferings and declares, “I have kept the faith.” But it’s clear that he knows that it’s only through the strength that God provided that he was able to do this, not his own strength. Of course, we’re called to reject sin, but these readings can remind us that Jesus died to make us holy, not respectable, and he taught, “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Our discipleship of the Lord, like sharing our resources with the Archdiocesan Annual Appeal, is a grateful response to God’s generosity to us, not an attempt to impress others – or ourselves. [Adapted from: http://www.

catholicsteward.com – Printed with permission]

For the grace to see ourselves as channels of God’s mercy to others by our contribution to the Archbishop’s Appeal, let us pray to the Lord.

Sacred Heart Community School Santa Store Needs Sacred Heart Community School is once again hosting their annual “Santa Store” for our students. The Santa Store allows our children to shop for Christmas gifts to give to their family members. These gifts are new or gently used items that can be re-gifted to family members (no clothing, nothing broken or dirty, and no books please). We rely on the generosity of our faith community to make this Christmas shopping possible for our students. Items that we need: dad type gifts, art, jewelry, make-up (new/unused), bath/spa-type items and preloved toys but no stuffed animals for hygienic reasons. If you have any items that you would like to donate to Sacred Heart’s Santa Store, they can be dropped off at the school up until Friday, November 29th. Please also note that we are taking donations of gift bags, gift tags, and tissue paper to help wrap their gifts. We greatly appreciate your support. If you have any questions please contact the school at 306-791-7290.
