HOLYBROOK PARISH NEWS Serving the communities of Fords Farm and Beansheaf Farm
www.holybrookparishcouncil.co.uk August 2017
Welcome to this year’s Holybrook Festival download. It was
wonderful to see so many families and friends enjoying an afternoon out at
Holybrook’s annual community event.
Did you know that the money raised from the Festival activities is
ploughed straight back in to fund the following year? This means that the
free activities can continue to be offered ensuring that the Festival remains an affordable event for
all.
Amongst the regular favourites; Circus Scene, Big Foot the Clown, K9
Planet Dog Show and Kick-Fit, we were glad to welcome, Owen’s
Animals with his creepy crawlies and snakes, Outdoor Academy offering
archery and disc golf, Reading Rockets with their basketball game, and
finally, Junk Percussion. All of whom were well received. In addition,
Pro-cision Football Coaching ran a fantastic inter-school football
tournament.
This year our chosen charity was ‘Daisy’s Dream’ whom we were
delighted to support. Thank you to each of you that kindly donated by putting
money in their buckets.
We had interesting and varied stalls and were delighted to
welcome some new additions including: British Beekeepers, RNLI, Sainsbury’s
Singers and Mini Professors (who demonstrated some amazing science experiments).
Finally, there are too many people to thank individually here. But,
hopefully, you know who you are! Without you all this event would not be
possible. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
The Festival Team is a small friendly group who are looking for highly
motivated people, with some spare time, to be involved in the Festival next
year. If this is you, please do contact the Parish Office on 0118 945 4339
for more information. Sarah Evans

Help Us Combat Loneliness
A successful volunteer Befriending scheme is looking for volunteers in the Holybrook area to befriend lonely people. The Befriend project started in April 2016 being co-ordinated from the Volunteer centre West Berkshire It is widely recognised that Befriending is an effective way of tackling social isolation. It can sometimes be the only contact with the outside world, shared interests can be developed. Once trained, you will be carefully matched to someone, then just like a friend, you will be to take a little time to visit once a week or so to enjoy each others company, or maybe a trip to the garden centre or local gardens. An example of someone who has benefited from Befriend is Maud. After contacting the befriending service Maud was introduced to Sue. The pair shared a love of walking and the cinema, and get on well, with Sue calling in to see Maud once a week. The service has over 50 volunteers who are DBS checked and referenced, but so far nobody in the Holybrook area. If you are interested in being a volunteer please contact the Befriend West Berkshire, on 01635 49004, email [email protected] or write to 1 Bolton Place, Northbrook Street, Newbury, RG14 1AJ.
The 2017 Open Day will be held on Saturday 5
August at the Thames Valley Police Training
Centre at Sulhamstead House, Sulhamstead,
near Reading RG7 4DX.
The Force Open Day helps to promote greater
understanding of the work of the various
departments and specialist roles within the
Force.

West Berkshire Matters Many of us will have shared thoughts and prayers for those that have lost their lives or loved ones in the terrible events that have taken place over recent months. In particular the tragedy of Grenfell Towers in London, has required a review by all Local Authorities of the buildings under their jurisdiction. Cllr Hilary Cole, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Planning and Housing, published an article in July offering reassurance across West Berkshire of the position and work being carried out. The article can be seen on the West Berkshire Council or the Holybrook Parish websites.
Travellers remain a concern shared by many residents and we can only assure you that work and engagement continues to ensure that the appropriate actions are taken at the earliest opportunity and, especially, where laws are being broken.
On a brighter note, all Ward Councillors would like to, once again, thank everyone involved in the Parish Festival this year; whether organising, providing attractions or visiting, it was a fantastic event and a credit to the Parish. Cllr Quentin Webb, Chairman of West Berkshire Council, was thrilled to have been invited and thoroughly enjoyed his time there.
Road repairs on Fords Farm have been completed, slightly delayed due to the incredibly warm weather which hampered the re-laying of the new surface. Thank you to everyone for their patience during the work, we do appreciate that this raised several concerns in the build-up and completion of the work.
We were hoping to have been able to provide final news on the Padworth Waste Management Facility application. Unfortunately, at the time of going to print, the matter is ongoing, but be assured that your Ward Councillors are pushing for updates and these will be shared. Once complete this is intended to not only provide more facilities but also to allow access for more hours each day.
We have been successful in securing some Members’ Bid funding from West Berkshire Council to further improvements to the Parish. We look forward to seeing the Trim Trail in the Linear Park, and improvements to the Kennet Valley Community Association building in the near future.
Ward Surgeries continue on the second Saturday of each month. There is no Surgery in August but will resume on 9th September, 14th October and 11th November. Please come along and discuss any local issues or concerns you may have. You will find us at the Newbury College area, at the back of the Sainsbury’s restaurant.
Enjoy the rest of your summer safely.
