Principal’s message
Year 12 Formal The annual year 12 formal is always a bittersweet
occasion where we formally say good-bye to our
graduating students. We celebrate their successes and
revel in the joy of their completion but at the same time
it is always sad to see them leave. I thoroughly enjoyed
my time with this year’s graduates and thank them most
sincerely for their time at Barham High School.
Congratulations to Ms Donnan for being their constant
confidante as year adviser and for providing pastoral
care.
Thank you to cluBarham and for all the organisers,
decorators and event planners for making the night such
a success. It was such a delight to spend time with the
students who were all dressed beautifully in their formal
attire. They all looked so different out of their school
uniform, there was no doubt that they have all become
young adults. I have included a transcript of the address
I presented on the evening later in this newsletter.
Remembrance Day Thank you to our wonderful school leaders who joined
me at the Remembrance Day service on Sunday 11th
November. Matthew and Sophie conducted themselves
with dignity and respect as they performed their official
duties by reciting the poems “In Flanders Fields” and
“We Shall Keep the Faith”.
We held our own ceremony on the following Tuesday.
Thank you to all involved, especially to the students who
demonstrated respect at this solemn occasion.
Showcase We are looking forward to the annual Art Showcase
being presented next week at school. The showcase will
feature works from students in Years 7-10. The
exhibition will be held in the school hall and will be open
from 3:15 – 5:30 on Tuesday 27th November. The
exhibition will also be available for viewing during school
hours on Wednesday 28th November. All are welcome.
Stage 5 assessment period It has been a busy assessment period for our Stage 5
students, some of whom have completed up to 7 exams
in the last two weeks. Staff will now begin the task of
marking exams, compiling grades and preparing reports
back to parents. Year 10 students have a busy program
of extra-curricular activities coming up over the
remainder of the term mixed in with normal classroom
activities. This includes Teen/Youth Mental Health First
Aid workshops and the All My Own Work program next
week, Work Experience for some in Week 8 and Driver
Education.
The Teen/Youth Mental Health First Aid workshops are a
great opportunity for students in Year 8 and Year 10 to
build capacity within our school to support students with
emerging mental ill health.
Year 6-7 Transition Barham High School has another four days remaining for
Year 6 transition into high school. There are a myriad of
opportunities planned ranging from lessons across the
range of KLA’s (Science, Maths, English, Art, HSIE) as well
as other experiences including robotics, language,
Library, food tech and PE.
We look forward to sharing our school with the year 6
students and are excited to welcome them into our
school in Year 7, 2019. Many thanks to Mr Yu for
organising the transition events and for all the teachers
for giving up their time to host these classes.

Deputy Principal’s message
As we progress through Term 4, many assessments that
will contribute to students’ yearly results for 2018, will
be completed. Students must ensure they are well
prepared for these assessments and that they give their
best effort.
The NSW Department of Education requires all students to attend school until Wednesday 19th December, the last day of teaching for Term 4 2018. Prior to this date, students in all year groups will be engaged in meaningful work, based on the curriculum and syllabus requirements.
If parents are seeking permission for their child to be absent from school for a period of time, the current Exemption from school – procedures should be followed and permission sought from Mr Buchanan.
Stage 5 Exams Stage 5 exams finish this week and a busy period is
coming up for the remainder of the year. Next week will
be Driver Education for Year 10 students. On Monday
26th November, the students will complete the in-school
theory component and then on Wednesday and
Thursday they travel to Charlton to complete the
practical component.
Teen Mental Health First Aid By the end of this week all Year 10 and Year 8 students
will have completed the teen Mental Health First Aid
program which helps equip our students with the skills
they need to recognise and help with mental health
problems and crises in their friends. A big thank you to
Michelle White for running this program for our
students.

Year 10 students have the option of completing another
work experience. Stage 5 classes will run as normal
during this week.

Science Department, just like that! As always, it’s been
a flat out time with all of the things happening!
Year 7
Declan, Lachie & Nathaniel with their Science toys
Year 7 have been busily completing their assessment
task for this term. They were required to design and
build a children’s toy out of recyclable materials, with
one small catch – their final product had to use FORCES
in some way! There have been many clever and creative
ideas going around, along with some exceptional
problem-solving skills. We can’t wait to see what they
produce, stay tuned to the next newsletter for some
photos!
Year 8 Year 8 finished off their Student Research Projects this
week and are continuing to work through their
Chemical Reactions unit. They will have the opportunity
to complete some fun practicals as we approach the
end of the year.
Stage 5 Stage 5 students completed their exam last week and
should be very proud of their efforts. It was pleasing to
see a strong understanding of the topics covered this
semester. There are plenty of activities for the students
to complete in the coming weeks, so we encourage the
students to maintain their enthusiasm for learning for
the rest of the term.
VALID 10 Results The VALID 10 results have been released and we are
proud to inform you that our students again performed
well with 80% of the cohort achieving in the top three
bands. 76% of these showed growth when compared to
their VALID 8 results in Year 8. Year 10 students will
receive a comprehensive report about their individual
results shortly. Congratulations to Year 10!
Year 11 Year 11 students are well into their Year 12 courses and
are to be commended on their diligent approach and

Visual Arts
Dali Birthday Party Day
Barham High School Diligence & Integrity
On Monday the 19th of November, Year 8 Visual Arts
participated in the Dali Party assessment task. Students
were given a formal invitation at the start of the Term to
attend Dali’s 114th Birthday celebration. Salvador Dali is
the most famous surreal artist and students have been
researching him in class. For their assessment, they had
to create a digital profile of him that outline his family
and childhood, education and artistic achievements.
From this information, students were then required to
hand make Dali a birthday present. He received a
number of interesting and relevant presents. Special
mention must go to Hayden sleep, who had the best
present on the day- a clock (From the famous melting
clock artwork ‘the Persistence of Memory’) made from
canvas (Because he painted on canvases) with hand of
the clock being made form a paintbrush and a can of ant
spray (He had a terrible phobia of ants) and the time
indicated his date of death. Hannah Boyd made him a
beautiful self-portrait, Cooper Birrer drew and framed a
lovely illustration of a butterfly on a rose inspired by one
of his paintings, Ella De Jong made him a bacon butterfly
and India Leonard made him an ant from found materials
(plastic spoon and wire). You know it is a good
assessment task where chocolate cake and fairy bread
are part of the task!
These presents and the work of students in Years 7-10
will all be available for your viewing pleasure on the
afternoon of Tuesday the 27th of November at our
Showcase exhibition from 3:15-5:30pm. The exhibition
will also be open for viewing anytime on Wednesday the
28th (during school hours). Just sign in as a visitor at the
front office and make your way to the school hall. We
would really appreciate your support- all welcome!

Barham Primary School Ceramic Fish Mural
Late last year, Miss Sullivan went to the primary school
and did a clay workshop with Year 6. They made hand-
built slab fish inspired by local species like Murray River
Cod and Yellow Belly. The beautiful works are all glazed,
fired and ready to be installed.
In the next few weeks, the backing board will be
painted and treated with varnish and the fish glued
onto the board, ready for their home at Barham
Primary School. Stay tuned for further updates.

TRANSCRIPT OF PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS TO YEAR 12
Good evening folks, welcome to tonight’s gala event – saying farewell to the Year 12 class of 2018.
I have a really strong affinity with this year group – we both started Barham High School at the same time, 2013. It has
been my absolute pleasure to watch these young people throughout their entire high school career, growing from their
much smaller Year 7 selves into the confident and mature adults we have here tonight. In my first year at Barham High
School, whilst I was nervously making my way around the school – a new environment, new teachers, new routines, you
guys were experiencing the same thing. Somehow we seemed to struggle through. In 2013 there were a total of 37
munchkins who joined our school community in Year 7. Some of them left our school a little early, and eventually we
became whittled down to the 18 wonderful Barham High School graduates we are celebrating with tonight.
So here we are at the end of your formalised, compulsory schooling but fortunately for you, it is not the end of your
learning. Learning is one of the great joys of life and will continue until your last day; the acquisition of new knowledge,
the assimilation of new skills, the connections you draw from environmental factors that will hone your decisions, opinions
and beliefs. From now on, some of the lessons will come easily, some lessons will not. Some lessons you will learn from
your successes, some lessons you will gain from your failures.
Your years at school are merely the building blocks to an even greater learning journey ahead. You will experience the
enormous joy in creating your own life and enjoying the benefits of it. You will discover the things you have to work the
hardest for are the ones you value the most. Of course there will be challenges ahead but when you are determined to
succeed you will handle anything that gets in your way. Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. Be
calm, and cool – whatever happens, how you handle hardship demonstrates a whole lot more about you than how you
handle success.
For your entire life we have referred to you as the future generation, that more or less stops now – you are now on the
precipice of becoming the present generation – you are the generation of NOW. It will be your actions and ideals that will
shape and manipulate society, you are the active members that the future generation will look up to and treat you as role
models – be good role models.
Keep your eyes out for opportunities – it is amazing how often they tap you on the shoulder, you just have to be open
and aware enough to recognise them when they present themselves. Opportunities will often take you on a completely
new direction, offering new experiences and unexpected outcomes – be brave enough to have a go, you might surprise
yourself. . . and if you don’t, just chalk it down to experience.
Tonight, we also acknowledge the work of your dedicated teachers. Teachers who are passionate about your education
and strive to give you the very best learning experiences, always. By setting such high expectations, focusing on
exceptional standards and challenging the pedestrian, your teachers have prepared you well for the HSC exams and more
importantly, their insistence on your personal best at all times has prepared you for a life of success.
We also cannot underestimate the importance of family. Familial influences shape who we are; blood truly is thicker than
water. As a parent myself, I understand the effort that goes on behind the scenes in getting the students though their
schooling. On behalf of the Year 12’s can I thank you all most sincerely, it is very much appreciated.
Eleanor Roosevelt said: “Small minds discuss people, average minds discuss events and great minds discuss ideas.” each
and every one of you is an intelligent and articulate human being. Don’t be passive or pedestrian through life’s journey,
be active with an enquiring mind; generate your own ideas and seek out others with whom you can discuss your ideas,
have your ideas challenged, investigated and validated. Be rigorous in your expectations in others and, more importantly,
yourselves. Determine for yourselves the highest moral standards and hold yourself to them.
Barham High School Diligence & Integrity
I will not be singling out significant individuals who have helped you on your way through the past six years at Barham
High School as the list is long and comprehensive. There is one exception, however, I would like to recognise Ms Kate
Donnan who has been your year adviser, friend, confidante, and mentor. Her unwavering support in you all as a year
group cannot be understated, she cares deeply for each and every one of you and she has gone beyond the line of duty
to be a wonderful year adviser. Thank you for all your efforts Kate, I really appreciate it.
Remember always shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you will land amongst the stars. And that’s what you are to us –
you are our stars. Today and always. You are all stars who have shone in some way. Nobody is outstanding at everything
but we are all brilliant at something. You, Year 12, have strengths beyond your years. I am truly confident that all of you
will make a difference in our world and find your true calling in life . . .or as in today’s world – callings - for I have no doubt
that many of you will take many pathways and have many careers.
So folks enjoy tonight and the next few weeks and months as you settle into the idea of no more school, enjoy the summer,
before you plunge headlong into your future – jobs, travel, further study. Do me a favour – be on the lookout for the first
time you say in a conversation “when I was at school. . .” when these word come out of your mouth (and they will
probably sooner than you realise), please think of us kindly and remember your time at Barham High School with affection
as we will remember you in exactly the same manner.
In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson – “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go, instead, where there is no path and
leave a trail”
