White &Light Kitchen

Think an all-white kitchen sounds boring? Think

again. This style is at once light, bright and

appealing. What enhances the freshness of this

“new again” trend is in the details. Interesting

textures, modern fixtures and contemporary

metal finishes add interest to what otherwise

might be a dull space. Choose a focal point where

you can add color or texture to draw attention.

In this kitchen, wood barstools with dark brown

leather seats give the eye a place to land.

Stainless appliances and light wood floors allow

the white cabinets to take center stage. The result

is a fresh, open, inviting space that complements

any design aesthetic.

5 Signs That You’re Ready

For A New FloorHow do you know when it’s time to

explore the home flooring options

at your local ProSource Showroom?

Just look for the signs.

Unsightly StainsNothing makes a floor look old and tired

like stains that stick around. You might not

remember how they got there, but your

flooring seems to be unwilling to forget. Despite your failed

attempts to scrub, shampoo and mop them into oblivion,

those stains are apparently not going away. That is, unless

your flooring does.

Wear And TearBy its very nature, home flooring takes a lot of abuse. (In

fact, we literally walk all over it.) When carpet becomes

matted, unfortunately there’s not much you can do to bring

it back. If your hard flooring develops cracks or tears, the

problem goes beyond aesthetics. That surface damage can

expose your subflooring to damage from spills and other

liquids – and replacing a subfloor requires a bigger project

than simply replacing a floor.

Wrinkles, Crinkles And Soft SpotsIn some ways, our flooring ages just like we do. And the

subfloor or carpet pad issues that develop along the way are

part of the life cycle – especially if your home flooring

is subjected to heavy traffic.

If your hard floor coverings develop soft spots or warped

areas, it’s likely a sign that both your floor and subfloor

need to be replaced. Along the same lines, if you start to see

wrinkles in your carpet, or hear crinkling sounds when you

walk on it, your project probably includes new pad as well as

carpet.

The Romance Is OverYou loved it when you first picked it out. But styles have

changed, and so has your décor. The flooring you once loved

now looks out of date and out of place, in your home. That’s

a sure sign that you need to rekindle the romance with a new

floor.

Making A MoveFor some homeowners, a sign that it’s time to replace flooring

is a “for sale” sign in the front yard. Nothing gives a room a

fresh, updated look like a new floor. It’s also a good way to

help neutralize a room’s color palette, and improve appeal to

potential buyers.

If you’re seeing signs that it’s time for new home flooring,

it’s time to see the experts at ProSource. Be sure to show the

product ideas you saved to the myProSource Project Center.

ProSource is the place to find the latest flooring solutions to

bring new life and better performance to your floors.

Kitchen CharmWith ReclaimedMaterials

Imagine preparing dinner on a butcher-block

countertop that came from a bakery in Paris,

walking under hardwood beams from a whiskey

distillery in Kentucky, or eating dinner on a surface

that started its life as an old farmhouse in Montana.

Reclaimed kitchens blend old and new for rustic

charm and character. Each piece of salvaged wood

tells a story, and your home can become part of

that history. Reclaimed wood comes with another

plus—knowing you’ve kept it out of a landfill and

putting pieces to good use just feels good.

Jim W.REMODELER MEMBER – PROSOURCE OF FORT WORTH (TX)

Tell us about your business.I’m a full-service remodeling contractor.

My company is dedicated to providing

all of our clients the absolute best in

high-quality professional renovations.

From the design process through

the completion of the renovations

themselves, we ensure that projects are

completed with quality and efficiency. We

do everything, but we specialize in

kitchens and baths.

How did you get started in business?

I’ve been in business for more than 18

years, but I’ve been doing this on and off

my whole life. It was something my father

and grandfather did, and I was actually

determined not to do it … but here I am.

And I’m glad I’m here.

Why do homeowners choose you? What sets your business apart?

All of our trades are in-house, which is

unusual. This is what I’m most proud

of; it’s what sets us apart. It’s the single

greatest thing that I have going for me.

Most of my guys have been with me for

over 10 years. Our customers know our

crew by name, and my guys feel like they

have their name on the work. They put in

their heart and soul. I couldn’t do what I

do without them.

My friends who own remodeling

companies say I’m crazy to do this. But if

all of your trades are in-house, they truly

work for the customer. We have control

over the quality and the production.

We do some big jobs. I think the reason

we get hired for big jobs is because

clients enjoy the fact that they have

a crew coming that they can rely on.

Clients know what to expect from us.

That relationship is important. My best

customer is the person who has had other

remodeling jobs, so they have something

to compare us to. This motivates me to

work hard, so I can maintain a full house

of licensed tradesmen.

My customers also like the way I bid the

jobs, because I’m transparent on the

numbers. So they feel like they’re part of

the budget process.

What trends do you see in home design and remodeling?

The biggest thing I’ve noticed is that

houses are being built differently. Now

it’s about an open concept. People want

big center islands and family rooms off of

the kitchen. It’s about taking a house and

turning it into a home that can service all

of your family needs.

10 | PROSOURCEWHOLESALE.COM

Page 13: Home Improvement ProSource Wholesale Catalog

When it comes to home remodeling projects, no room will give you more return on your investment than the kitchen. However, with so many elements to plan for, including appliances, cabinets and countertops, it can also be the most challenging room to remodel.

So how do you manage it all successfully? Here are three

helpful tips from the kitchen design experts at ProSource.

Before thinking about what to put in your kitchen, think about how you use it.Knowing how you use your kitchen is essential to planning

your space and making smart decisions about what should

go in it.

For example, if someone in the family loves to cook they

probably have an idea or two about the kind of appliances

they want. These tools for culinary glory should be

incorporated into the kitchen renovation plan first, because

they not only dictate the layout, but also the size of other

components around them.

Take an honest look at your space and budget, as well as your wish list. It’s not uncommon for people to begin a remodeling project

with more wish-list items than space or budget.

According to one ProSource designer, “Homeowners see

things on TV remodeling shows, but they often don’t realize

how much those things actually cost. It’s our job to include

as many of the items on their wish list as possible, given the

parameters of the kitchen and the budget.”

Cooking Up The Perfect Kitchen Remodel3 Tips From Design Professionals

Let a design pro help you make the most of your ideas, space and remodel.Your kitchen space is your canvas, and you have lots of ideas

on how to fill it. A design professional can offer the expertise

and resources you’ll need to do that successfully.

A ProSource kitchen and bath designer can help you do much

more than select cabinet designs and countertop colors. They

can also suggest ideas, such as convection/microwave oven

combinations that will help you maximize the usefulness of

the space you have.

With an understanding of who will be using your kitchen

and how they will use it, a design professional can provide

functional storage and access solutions, such as the

microwave drawers that have become popular with many

homeowners.

Peruse the kitchen inspiration images online and add those

you like to the myProSource Project Center. Then share those

ideas with your ProSource kitchen and bath designer who can

encourage you to consider all elements. Your finished remodel

can be the kitchen of your dreams – and an investment that

will pay off in increased home value.

Is That The Same Kitchen? Yes!

Many homeowners love the look of rich, dark cabinets

but don’t want to create a space that is too dark or

heavy. Lighting is used to great effect in this kitchen,

making the space appear light and bright. Cabinets

are placed sparingly around unadorned windows

in order to allow the maximum amount of natural

light to find its way inside and white frames make

the openings appear larger, showcasing the scenery

outside. Recessed lights around the perimeter are

both generous and understated, flooding task areas.

The hanging pendants are light and airy, and frosted

glass panels on upper cabinets reflect the white center

island, which is generous without being imposing.

Stainless steel appliances and accents balance

the dark warmth of the wood. The cool glass tile

backsplash lightens up the space; its horizontal lines

creating an open vibe. If you love the look of dark wood

cabinets, use light to open up your space.

The Latest Trends In Cabinets: Mix It UpWe’re seeing some exciting kitchen cabinet trends that don’t just play with a contrast in colors, but also with textures and materials, achieving statements both simple and luxurious, according to Eka Sukmawati, National Design and Merchandising Specialist at ProSource. In fact, be on the lookout for ways to mix the following elements.

A trendy look that continues for kitchen cabinets is a mix

of different colors and wood. But these combinations don’t

just include different paints and stains the way we’ve seen in

recent years. They take the look a step further by combining

multiple finishes.

Two-toned tuxedo kitchens are moving beyond the

combination of black and white. The look has welcomed all

sorts of combinations. The key is to pair colors with

neutrals such as white, gray, or a natural stain to achieve

a pleasing balance.

A big emphasis currently with designs is creating variations

of texture, which is as important as color when it comes to

informing design choices. Like color, texture can be used

to create a focal point and set the mood. Texture is an

especially exciting element because its subtlety lends an air of

luxurious sophistication—and current cabinetry is especially

sophisticated.

In the past, we saw light or dark-toned woods combined with

painted cabinets. Now we are seeing changes in texture with an

emphasis on finishes, such as distressed wood cabinets mixed

with high-gloss cabinet doors.

Some manufacturers that previously only offered stained and

glazed finishes are now offering textured laminate. They might

be replicas of a wood product, or they might be used as solids.

Either way, their greater resistance to scratches, scuffs, and

staining make them ideal to use in busy work areas.

White cabinets continue to be popular, but flat doors, clean lines,

and high gloss lend a fresh appeal. Black and gray stains are still

trending, but often with glossier finishes. Gray or black-toned

stains might be added to natural woods, like light maple, to

make them darker and more dramatic. Or natural finishes might

be used to bring out the subtle textures found in hardwood.

The eclectic design of this room works because of the juxtaposition

of textures: soft and hard, light and dark, rough and smooth. In this

space, wood flooring looks both elegant and timeless, while the shag

rug grounds the space, adding a layer of coziness under the sleekness of

the glass and steel table. The overhead fixture points light up to bounce

off the white ceiling, and wall sconces cast an intimate glow against the

built-ins. The simple fixtures don’t compete with the other elements

in the room, instead letting the light do all the work. Tell your story

in a setting where you can both entertain and be entertained by your

surroundings. Regardless of your design style, you can create a light-

filled dining room in which friends and family will enjoy lingering.

Living RoomWith ABold Color Statement

You don’t have to be an artist to achieve a bold,

balanced design. Start with a blank canvas. In

this space a dark hardwood floor, built-ins with

wide moldings and box windows speak to a

more time-honored aesthetic.

Nature was the design muse in this room. The

gold accents pick up the hints of dry grass

and afternoon sunsets in the view through

the windows, while the branches in the area

rug mimic the real thing outside. Natural light

works to great effect as well, casting light on

the wood floors and bouncing off the white

ceilings to add drama to the stage that is the

center of this elegant room. The homeowners

took their cue to go bold from the light blue in

the rug, bringing their space to life with bright

teal couches. The effect is an elegant, tasteful

space filled with character.

Laurie M.DESIGNER MEMBER – PROSOURCE OF BLOOMINGTON (MN)

Tell us about your business.I offer real estate staging, interior

redesign and home remodeling projects.

I work with my customers, incorporating

their lifestyle, wants and needs to make

their homes not only beautiful, but also

livable. I don’t just create “look see”

rooms; I give my customers something

that they’re proud to show off, but that’s

still family friendly.

I believe you only get one chance to

make a good first impression. I help my

clients create “rooms with impact” that

maximize their greatest asset: their home

or real estate listing.

Why do homeownerschoose you? What setsyour business apart?Usually they make a connection with

some of my designs. Then there’s the

interview process … you have to make

sure you connect with your customers.

I make sure to make a connection

with them.

What are the greatest challenges you face in your work?Sometimes it’s finding the right piece of

furniture to go in a room. At other times

it’s coordinating with my clients and their

needs. Or having a married couple agree

to create a mixture that reflects both of

their personalities and likes.

Sometimes I need to be a mind reader.

It’s important to get a feel for what will

make your customer happy. For a model

home, that depends on the demographic

for potential buyers.

What trends do you see in home design and remodeling?Right now gold is making a comeback.

I’m seeing a lot of metals in decor, such as

gold chandeliers and gold knobs. Usually

fashion trends come into design trends

– and right now gold is coming back into

fashion, design and decorating.

I’m also seeing black stainless steel

for appliances. It’s a darker color that

doesn’t show fingerprint as much, so it’s

not so high maintenance.

How did you get started in business?I officially started my own business in

2010, but before that I was staging for

other companies. I’ve always loved

decorating, and always had a passion

for it.

What brings you the most satisfaction in your work? It’s the compliments from the customers

- there’s big satisfaction in that. Also,

it’s about seeing how projects turn out. I

consider myself an artist and the rooms

are my canvas. I incorporate what the

owners already have whenever possible.

Staging is always a blank canvas. I bring

in things to make the rooms colorful and

pleasing for the eye. The first year one of

my builder clients used me for staging,

he went from selling 16 to 24 homes per

year. During the last two years I’ve staged

for him, he has sold about 30 homes each

year. I’ve also worked on two Dream

Homes and one Artisan Home.

Starting a remodeling project can be daunting for a variety of reasons, and many times homeowners can talk themselves out of it before they ever begin. Before you file your remodeling dream into your mental ‘unfulfilled’ file, consider these four reasons why people don’t start a remodeling project, and why you should ignore them.

Overwhelming ChoicesKnowing you hate what you have, but not knowing

what you want to change about your design can be

exceptionally overwhelming –- and cause you to put off

starting your project for weeks, if not months.

Why You Should Ignore ItYou should ignore this because, well, you’ve got to start

somewhere! Scanning the completed project images

from the inspiration section online, and adding images

to your project center, can help you generate tons of

design ideas.

Finding ContractorsYou may have grand ideas about remodeling your home,

but the idea of finding the right trade professional feels like

a game of roulette.

Why You Should Ignore ItYour local ProSource Showroom has a network of

qualified contractors in your area. Discuss your project

with one of our account managers and they can help

connect you with the right contractor for your project.

4 Reasons Why People Don’t Start A Project &Why To Ignore Them

Selling Your HouseA lot of times, homeowners wonder if making simple

upgrades will really increase the value of their homes. You

justify it by telling yourself that whoever ends up buying it

will probably want to choose what they put in anyway.

Why You Should Ignore ItMaking small upgrades to your house can go a long way

toward increasing the perceived value of your home.

The Number One Reason People Don’t Start Home Improvement Projects: BudgetMany times homeowners have big ideas about how they

want to change their homes, but don’t often have the budget

to back it up.

Why You Should Ignore ItEven if you don’t have the budget to completely gut your

kitchen or bathroom and fill it with stuff of your dreams,

there are still innumerable home improvements you

can make for a small amount of money that will greatly

improve the style and value of your home.

Which Flooring Goes In Which Room:Is This A Trick Question?Flooring is the foundation for the beauty and functionality of any home. It’s the foundation of your daily life. But at the moment, it may make you want to run away in horror. Or, maybe you just tried to ignore it until now.

Since we want you to love your home, let’s talk about that

flooring. What do you want to change? Do you know which type

you want in each space? Do you have an open floor plan and

want to use the same flooring throughout? Is your preference to

enjoy a mix of flooring types?

Asking which floorcovering goes in which room is not a trick

question. There are so many choices to consider. This is about

selecting the ideal floor for every space in your home.

We know you have your style and color preferences. This is a

rundown of other considerations and where each floor type

typically works best.

First Considerations§ Size of space

§ Function

§ Foot traffic

§ Ease of cleaning required

§ Children and pets

§ Moisture resistance

§ Expected lifespan of floor

Primary Floor Considerations By Room§ Bathroom: durability, ease of maintenance/cleaning, moisture resistance

§ Bedroom: comfort, quiet

§ Dining: personal preference

§ Entry/Hallway: durability, ease of maintenance/cleaning

§ Living: comfort, ease of maintenance/cleaning, quiet

§ Kitchen: durability, ease of maintenance/cleaning, moisture resistance

§ Laundry: durability, ease of maintenance/cleaning

§ Media: sound dampening, comfort

§ Office: comfort, durability

General Guidelines For Usage By Floor TypeEach type of floorcovering has its own unique characteristics

and recommended use. Here is a quick rundown you can use as a

reference when meeting with your local ProSource Showroom.

CARPET OR CARPET TILE

Carpet is best suited for spaces where comfort, warmth and

quiet are priorities. This includes the living room, office,

bedroom, hallway, stairs, media room and basement.

28 | PROSOURCEWHOLESALE.COM

Page 31: Home Improvement ProSource Wholesale Catalog

SOLID HARDWOOD

Solid hardwood is suitable for any room not sensitive to

moisture. Just do not install it below ground level or directly

over a concrete slab. Appropriate rooms include the bedroom,

dining, entry/hallway, living room and kitchen.

ENGINEERED HARDWOOD

Engineered hardwood goes anywhere a plank floor can go. Plus,

you can install it in above-grade and below-grade locations. This

means it can go in the same rooms as solid hardwood, but add

basement to the list as well.

STONE

Where you use stone flooring depends

on the room and which stone will work

best for that space. As stone is a hard

surface, comfort and quiet are likely not

as important to you as its beauty and

durability.

CERAMIC OR PORCELAIN TILE

Tile is a great choice for homes in humid

locations. It is ideal for an entry, kitchen,

bathroom, entertainment area, laundry

and the porch. Like stone, comfort and

quiet are not top priorities.

LAMINATE

Install laminate just about anywhere in the home such as a

bedroom, office, living room and kitchen. Check manufacturer

recommendations about placement in any moisture-prone

areas such as the basement, laundry and bathroom.

VINYL

You can use vinyl, whether sheet or tile, in many spaces around

the home. Find it in an entry, kitchen, bathroom, basement and

laundry room.

These are some basic guidelines to prepare you to make flooring

decisions that suit you best.

Review the inspiration for ideas, and add images you like to the

myProSource Project Center.

Bring your ideas and questions to your local ProSource

Showroom. We’re happy to show you selections that best match

your criteria. And we promise, no trick questions.

Choosing The Perfect Sliding Doors For Your SpaceSliding doors have hit the main stream. They can be seen in

office spaces and homes, both urban and rural, and of high-

end and moderate means.

So how can you decide if sliding doors are right for your space?

And which type best suits your design aesthetic? First, deter-

mine the purpose of the doors, then choose your style prefer-

ence and start exploring.

PurposeCOVERAGE

Clothes closets, kitchen pantries, even storage areas can ben-

efit from sliding doors that allow for easy access to the things

you need every day.

ROOM DIVIDER

Sliding doors serve well to separate spaces for different pur-

poses in any open space.

PRIVACY

Although some sliding door styles may not afford you com-

plete privacy, they will cut down on noise and give the illusion

of privacy, which is oftentimes all you need in your home.

Style PreferenceCLASSIC BARN DOORS

Unfinished wood with a wide diagonal

cross bar and hardware to match. You

don’t have to live on a farm, or even

in a 100 year-old home, to pull off this

door style.

CONTEMPORARY

Mirrored or glass sliding doors are

perfect for a sleek, modern space.

RECLAIMED WOOD

This style of sliding door is more typical of the trending barn

doors and is marked by salvaged wood.

STEEL

Heavy steel can add an impressive industrial feel to your

room.

FABRIC

Lightweight fabric barn-style sliding doors can be custom-

ized to fit almost any design preference, from traditional to

contemporary.

Don’t Forget The HardwareIn addition to being a functional element, sliding door hardware

adds to the overall design. There are styles and finishes for every

style of door and design preference.

From cheap chic to high-end haute couture, the breadth of styles

in sliding doors is almost as wide as your imagination.

Eric M.BUILDER MEMBER – PROSOURCE OF SPOKANE (WA)

last house I did had some grey tones.

I’m more eclectic. I like a timeless entry

and home exterior. On the inside, I’ll mix

contemporary and classic.

Why do homeowners choose you? What sets your business apart?I’m pretty good at what I do. I build a

superior product. My motto is, “Attention

to Detail.” I design all of my homes

myself, and draw my own plans. This

ensures each home has the look and feel

I require. Regardless of the size of the

project, I want it to radiate quality.

That’s why I like to have a spec house at

all times. When people come to me, they

want the Eric Madsen look, outside and

inside. Everything is proportionate. You

can see that I didn’t cut any corners.

What brings you the most satisfaction in your work?I’m really particular about my houses’

street appeal. That’s my number-one

concern. They have to ooze quality from

the street. Proportions and textures are

so vitally important to homebuilding.

That’s why I like to draw my own plans.

Tell us about your business.I’m a homebuilder. I always have one

spec, and one or two custom homes,

going at the same time.

How did you get started in business?I’ve been in the homebuilding business

for 25 years, being on my own for the last

nine. I received a degree in construction

management, and my first job was with a

homebuilder. I just kind of stayed with it.

I had always worked for custom

homebuilders, but found the quality in

my market wasn’t up to my personal

standard.

What trends do you see in home design and remodeling?A lot of people are going simpler and

cleaner. For example, more subway

tile and less deco tile. They’re getting

away from browns in hardware. The

Cabinet details enhance the look of fine furnishings

thanks to rich moldings, custom tile speaks to

elegance and refinement, and a comfortable seating

area coupled with warm colors and soft lighting add

just the right touches to this regal bath. The tub is just

as grand, with its marble steps that create a literal

ascent. The inviting execution of the vanity and tub

sends the subtle message that this room is a place for

relaxation and pampering. Throughout the room are

the gentlest touches of sea and spa, which whisper—

without ever shouting—that this regal bathroom could

reside in a country villa near the sea. Which is not a bad

place to spend a little extra time.

Tom S.INSTALLER MEMBER – PROSOURCE OF LEXINGTON (KY)

Tell us about your business.I’m a flooring contractor and the owner

of Bluegrass Flooring. We work in sales,

design and installation of custom stone

and tile. We design and install floors,

showers, backsplashes, inlays, borders

and patterns, and we turn out some

absolutely beautiful projects. I feel like

we not only add value to people’s homes;

we also add joy.

How did you get started in business?I’ve been in the building trade for about

30 years now. I started in one of the larg-

est architecture firms on the east coast as

a director of construction administration.

Then I worked for a luxury home builder

for several years, on homes in the $3 to

$9 million range. For years I did tile and

hardwood on the side, but it took until I

was 40 years old to start being a flooring

subcontractor. The only regret is that I

didn’t do this 30 years ago.

What trends do you see in home design and remodeling?People are spending more time educating

themselves on what they want to have

done. They’re doing more research and

asking for products by name. This is a

good thing. People are seeing products

on HGTV and educating themselves more

about those products and processes.

Large format tile is also a trend in the

last few years. For example, 12x24-inch

tile is huge, and tile keeps getting bigger.

I’m now seeing porcelain tile as large as

60x120 inches that’s made to look like

marble. This is new to our market, and to

the industry. It’s popular in Europe, and

will gain popularity here.

Wood plank look tile is also getting big.

It’s a great alternative to hardwood. The

challenge with these large-format planks

is that the subfloor has to be flat. There

is a lot of prep - the subfloor can cost as

much as the tile, but has to be done right

for the tile to install and work right.

Glass has also become quite popular,

and the cost of glass has dramatically

dropped.

Why do homeownerschoose you? What sets your business apart? We don’t have exclusive rights to

anything in this town. The only way we

can separate ourselves is by what we do

with it. It’s in how we use our materials,

and the respect we have for our clients’

homes.

I’m also a big believer in crystal clear

communication. I don’t want surprises,

and I don’t want my customers to have

them. At the end of the day, I’m installing

a product that’s going to last a lifetime in

someone’s home. I want them to under-

stand and feel comfortable about what

we’re doing.

What brings you the most satisfaction in your work?I have a passion for this industry, and for

what I do.

When the homeowner is happy, it really

makes me feel good about what we do.

It’s what drives me. My guys are crafts-

men. When we get reviews and clients

mention their installer by name, it makes

them beam with pride.

It’s always nice when you get to the end

and the homeowner says that they love it.

8 Must-See Features For The Ultimate Spa Bathroom Makeover

Walk-In ShowersPractical and useful, a walk-in shower with body jets and

rain showerheads is a major upgrade. And the best part is,

it’s not the sort of thing that you’ll install and rarely use. A

walk-in shower is a smart addition if you are planning on

staying in your home long-term, as it provides easy access

for people who are older and may have limited mobility.

Heated Floors and Towel RacksSay goodbye to cold feet. Not only is this high-end option

warm and cozy, it can also reduce energy costs over

time with no forced air furnace needed to create a much

quieter bath experience. Heated towel racks do exactly

what you think – they make your towels nice and toasty

for an enjoyable, just-out-of-the-dryer feeling.

Steam ShowersAre you a fan of the spa steam room? Indulge in a steam

room of your very own. The perks of a steam shower go

beyond luxury – steam bathing only uses, on average,

about two gallons of water.

Mood Lighting and MusicMany homeowners are also opting for mood lighting

and music in the shower as well. This is a must for the

technology lover and the music lover. Singing in the

shower may just become a full-fledged performance.

Floating VanitiesWhile they are not necessarily a spa feature, floating

vanities are a contemporary touch that provides the

feeling of being at a luxury spa. Floating vanities are

wall-mounted and require no legs. Under-mounted

lighting can add additional drama to the room and

anti-fogging mirrors mean you don’t have to wait for

the room to cool off before seeing your reflection – or

needing to clean watermarks later.

Programmable ThermostatsProgrammable thermostats give your water temperature

an automatic adjustment for the perfect shower

temperature, and many eco-minded homeowners can

breathe easily as high-end showers also offer reduced

water flow for environmentally friendly water usage.

Dual ShowerheadsShare your spa experience with your significant other and

add a second showerhead. Walk-in showers often have

plenty of room for two and with dual showerheads, there’s

plenty of water, too. Shower seats are another luxury add-on.

Free-Standing Soaking Tubs andHigh Tech JacuzzisSpa connoisseurs truly appreciate the luxurious

relaxation provided by a nice, long, hot bath, and you

can up the ante of your bathing experience with new

tub features like built-in vibrational acoustics which

vibrates the water to the beat of your favorite album.

Jet tubs now offer up to six types of bubbles to

choose from. In the mood for something fizzy? Go

for champagne bubbles. Want something with more

power? Turn on the jets.Contact your local showroom or go online at

Into The Blue

This bathroom uses all the colors you’d see

standing on a beach to entice your senses.

Large expanses of tranquil, Mediterranean

blues evoke the water. The countertop and

tub edge blend perfectly with the lower tile,

and the shower walls create an endless, sea-

meets-sky feel, effectively creating a sense of

continuity. Large floor tiles break up fish-scale

sized tiles, and their diagonal placement

leads the eye outward, providing a sense of

openness. Smooth, glass knobs and stainless

faucets mimic sparkling sunlight and beach

glass. The functional task lighting is daylight-

bright while understated enough to recede

even though their light does not. Uncluttered

simplicity lends an air of openness to this

space and provides a great way to send guests

(or yourself) on an island vacation without

ever leaving home!

SleepingIn The LapOf Luxury

Everything in this space speaks of luxury, comfort

and style. Heavy and light work together to

balance each other out in this dreamy space.

The cream-colored walls, wainscoting and wide

ceiling beams offset the heaviness of the dark

ceiling and wood furniture. The textures and

patterns in the plush bedding, thick carpeting

and accent pieces are woven together in subtle

harmony to create a smart, elegant space.

Warm lighting offsets the heavier draperies, and

light-colored fabrics surround large furniture so

that the room does not feel weighed down. Like

Top Flooring Choices For The Hottest Designs

CoastalGrey is one of the hottest home interior colors and a coastal

design is right on trend, incorporating driftwood grey hues

with hints of blue. You may also see coastal designs gravitating

toward whites, greys and mid-range stained wood grains.

A natural feel is imperative for this design and hardwood or

wood-look laminate will pull together the look perfectly. This

style leans heavily on light, weathered hardwoods which are

whitewashed or pickled, blonde maple and ash, or bamboo.

ContemporaryContemporary design is all about open space, clean lines, and

simplicity. This design typically opts for hard surfaces such

as stone or ceramic tile, bamboo, blonde woods like maple or

ash, or alternatively, espresso colored planks.

Contemporary rooms keep a polished look, so high-gloss

Deciding to renovate your home can be a daunting task

with the plethora of choices available today. It’s easy to

be overwhelmed when picking a style and determining all the

elements that will go with it such as: flooring, paint colors,

cabinet styles, furniture and decor accents.

To help, here are suggestions for flooring options to fit some of

the most popular designs.

hardwoods fit right in. If you prefer a softer feel on your feet,

carpet tile is an option that still fits with the design.

RusticA rustic design juxtaposes organic textures and shapes with

natural warmth. As you may have guessed, rustic hand-scraped

and distressed hardwoods are a natural fit for this design. Dents

are built right into the wood to give it a worn-look.

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly flooring option,

consider a wood-look laminate that also gets the job done.

TraditionalTraditional decor creates a cozy and comfortable environment;

as such, you’ll want to consider a cushy carpet in neutral tones.

You might even choose one with a subtle pattern for additional

texture. Grey and taupe carpets are especially popular at the

moment. Rich-toned hardwood is also a popular selection

within traditional design. Walnut, mahogany, cherry, oak – these

darker-toned woods bring in additional warmth, and a satin or

glossy finish will make your floors shine.

TransitionalThe best thing about transitional design is that pretty much

anything goes, and because it can be updated indefinitely to

reflect what’s trending, it will also be long-lasting.

You can incorporate just about any type of flooring into a

transitional design and it will work well so long as the room is

balanced: Stick with hardwood of any style or go with carpet.

Tile and vinyl can also be just as workable in a transitional space.

And of course, laminate is always an option as well.

Before you can begin your home remodeling project, you’ll

need to determine your budget. Fortunately, there are some

standard rules and tools that can help. Follow these five steps

to get a clear picture of the budget you’ll need to accomplish

your home remodeling goals.

Step One: Follow The 5 To 15% RuleThe rule states that your remodel project should cost no less

than five percent and no more than 15 percent of the current

value of your home.

Step Two: Determine The Scope Of Your ProjectDoes your room need a complete gut job or just

a minor facelift?

Step Three: Add Cost Of Living ExpensesOften it’s the day-to-day costs that get overlooked, causing

you to go way over budget. Be sure to take these costs into

consideration when planning your budget.

Step Four: Factor In The VariablesWith all the variables that can affect your budget, here are some

factors to consider:

HOME VALUE

Take into account not only what you think your home is

worth, but also the value of similar updated homes in your

neighborhood.

MOTIVATION

Make a list of factors that are motivating you to remodel.

NEEDS VS. WANTS

Once you’ve envisioned your dream room, you’ll have a

better idea of your absolute project essentials.

FUTURE

If your goal is to spend the next 15 years enjoying your

remodeled room, you might be willing to spend more than

if moving is part of your five year plan.

SIZE

If your room is larger or smaller than average, you may

need to increase or decrease your budget accordingly.

LAYOUT

If you already know you’re going to want an island appli-

ance added or an interior wall moved, you’ll need to spend

well beyond what a basic facelift would cost.

Step Five: Get A Pro’s OpinionProSource Showrooms offer expert kitchen and bath design

services, and many times can recommend unique remodeling

ideas that can save you money.

Once you’ve determined your home remodel project

budget, the best thing you can do is stick to it. That said,

even the most carefully created budget can be thrown off

by unforeseen costs. If so, follow suggested guidelines for

keeping your project budget under control.

Keep It Clean &Organized

Spending time in a disorganized, messy laundry

or mudroom can be a drain on your energy.

Boost your productivity with a clean, organized

space. With a little planning, it’s definitely

possible. Remember, you want everyone to pitch

in and help to keep things clean and organized,

so don’t make it too complicated.

Start with a plan that considers each family

member’s needs, and provide each person a

space of his or her own. Use cabinets to help

keep counters clear, install countertops at

the right height for folding laundry and add a

message center for family communication. With

a little planning, designing a modern laundry

or mudroom is achievable, and keeping it clean

and organized is possible. Your clean, organized

space is just a plan away!

Four Keys ToA SuccessfulRelationship With Your Trade ProAnyone who’s completed a significant home improvement

project in the past is aware of the potential pitfalls that arise

when working with trade professionals. For any decision with

a builder, designer, remodeler or other expert, there’s the

potential for disagreement on what can be done.

Most issues are happily resolved. And just like in any creative

endeavor, a little confrontation can be beneficial and usually

ends up contributing to the quality of the final product. In this

case, that would be your home.

To help you achieve your shared goal of completing a

fantastic project, here are a few tips that will result in a terrific

team effort: Avoid micromanaging. Resist watching over your

trade pro(s) every second. Respect their space and

be mildly flexible with schedules when it comes to

weather, emergencies, and so forth. Recommend

that you review progress-to-date at key pre-

determined stages.

Be clear up front what both sides expect in terms of

budgets and payment schedules. And never – EVER –

hesitate to discuss any money issues. It’s sometimes

difficult, but it makes life easier down the road.

Don’t be a boss; be a partner. In fact, tell him or her

up front that your goal is to facilitate a partnership in

which you agree to respect each other’s opinions and

trust each other’s judgment. Sounds like a marriage,

right? But in truth, if there’s chemistry in your

discussions from day one, you’ll be on a good path.

Communicate! This is critical in forging a partnership.

Discuss up front the importance of being open

with questions – and this is key – listening. It’s also

important to keep written records, even going so

far as to document conversations. This is a business

arrangement, right? Just be sure that you’ve made it

clear that you think such records and documentation

is a good thing – and not a way to “keep an eye” on

your hired help.

Ultimately, you want to feel like your relationship was valuable.

Believe it or not, it’s easier than you think. Partner with the right

person, communicate, let your people do what they do best,

and be honest, open and respectful about money. You can start

by finding great trade pros at ProSource.
