Look at the words above. What do you notice? Yes, they are all verbs and they either end in ‘d’ or ‘de’. Those that end in ‘de’ have a split digraph and this could be drawn in with the line linking the two vowels. Spelling – Words with spellings containing ‘sion’.

Look at the words above. What do you notice?

Yes, they are all verbs and they either end in ‘d’ or ‘de’. Those that end in ‘de’ have a split digraph

and this could be drawn in with the line linking the two vowels. Take one word such as explode and

turn it into an ending with ‘sion’ for example, explode becomes explosion. Now do this for all the

words from the list. Set up your page as per the next sheet. You will see that verbs ending in ‘d’ or ‘de’

(with the long vowel) use ‘sion’. What word class are they when ‘sion’ is added?

Chapter 9 Lesson 8 Estimating Amounts of Money

Worksheet Pages: 56-57

Lesson Objective: To be able to estimate amounts of money.

Lesson Approach

Look at Let’s Learn 4. How can we estimate the price of one smoothie? Do we estimate the total amount of money before division or divide before estimating?

During Guided Practice, you are going to estimate the total amount of money for three items by rounding each one to the nearest pound.

When estimating an amount to the nearest £10, compare the totals when rounding to the nearest pound and round to the nearest £10.

£15.50 to the nearest pound = £16.00 (because 50p is ‘5’ and above round up, 4 and below round down) and rounding £15.50 to the nearest £10 = £20.00

Guided Practice:

Activity Time – Make up or collect about four receipts, each one containing at least 6 items.

Estimate the total amount. How much are the totals? Are they very different to your estimates? Why /

why not?

Guided Practice answers

Items rounded to the nearest £

£45.80 = £46.00 £12.80 = £13.00 £32.10 = £32.00

£46.00 + £13.00 + £32.00 = £91.00 Therefore, the estimated total cost to the nearest £1 is £91.00
