Johnson High School2019-20 Bell Schedule

First Day of School

• Students report to their assigned advisory homeroom to pick up their official schedule

• Mr. Comalander will email the advisory schedule and homeroom assignments the weekend before school starts.

• Posters will be posted throughout the building with alpha breakdown and advisory room assignments

What to Expect at Johnson• Best effort from all

– “Not to equal, but to excel”

• Teachers will work with students to reach their individual potential

• Communication is critical

• Teach kids to be self-advocates

• Homework – Increased expectations and time management is critical

Opportunities to get Involved• Extracurricular involvement was seen as one indicator of success in

our top performing students from all NEISD High Schools

• Involvement in school and community activities – Builds character and connections– Builds leadership and time management skills– Strengthens your high school resume

• There is something for everyone here at Johnson:– Academic UIL & Honor Societies– Athletics– Clubs and Organizations– Debate– Fine Arts: Band, Choir, Orchestra, and Theatre– JROTC– Model UN– Spirit Organizations: Cheer, Dance Teams, and Pep Squad

Tips We Share with Students (and would like for you to reinforce at home)

• Use your Agenda Planner (more details on next slide)

• Keep backpack, binders and folders organized• Make a “To Do” list each night• Establish a routine• Find at least one study buddy in each class• Use teacher web & tutoring resources• Use your family access portal account to check

on assignments – this is for parents AND students

Importance of Agendas• Every 9th grade student will be strongly

encouraged to have an agenda

• It is a very important tool that will be used to teach our students organizational skills

• We encourage parents to review them

Agendas cost $10 and will be available to purchase in Cafeteria at Cub Camp, Prep Days, and during the 1st week of school

Steps to Student Success• Attend class every day• Participate in class • Have a positive attitude• Manage homework well• Study and prepare for tests• Student takes responsibility for their own

learning and utilizes their resources• Students communicate with their teachers

Tips for Parents• Show interest and be available to help – listen to your

child• Communicate with teachers (parent portal, websites,

emails)• Encourage good attendance and school involvement• Be aware of grading cycles and when progress reports

and report cards are posted; see district calendar• Discuss classes and set goals with your child• Monitor your child’s social media• Monitor level of time commitment to activities • Read our weekly Virtual Guidance emails from

Counseling Office

Important Notes• Be aware of your child’s Graduation Plan and graduation

requirements

• From the Summer after 8th grade, semester grades count toward GPA and Rank. So every year is important – we encourage students to start strong

• All Grad Plans require passing the 5 STAAR End of Course (EOC) Exams:– English I and English II– Biology I– Algebra I– US History

Communication is Key• Check the Skyward family access on regular

basis• Email teachers if you have a concern• Attend Johnson PTSA Meet the Teachers Night

on September 17th

• Use the Johnson webpage resources• Attend our Parent Nights this fall• If your child will be absent more than 3 days in

a row, call Attendance Office for assignments

Course Concerns• Pre-AP and AP classes can be dropped

– between the 2nd and 9th weeks of the first grading period

– for 2nd semester (let counselor know in December)

• No requests for elective changes will be considered – Only exceptions due to financial and time

requirements:• Athletics, Band, Choir, Orchestra, Debate, JROTC or Spirit

How to Drop a Pre-AP Class Once School Has Begun

• Conversation between teacher and parent• Teacher will send drop form home with student• Parent signs the drop form first• Teacher signs the drop form• Teacher sends drop form to counselor who will

make the schedule change • Grade will be weighted and sent to new

teacher

Counseling Office Procedures

When can students meet with their counselor?• For schedule changes or questions:

– Before or after school– During your lunch period– Email questions anytime– Complete a request (found in counseling office) and

counselor will call student from class within 2 days

• Counselors are always available for emergencies

– Senior Parent Night on September 10th

– Freshman and Sophomore Parent Night on September 23rd

– Scholarship & FAFSA Night – October 7th

– Junior Parent Night on November 18th

mid September
