PHES Press HOME OF THE SHARKS Principal’s Message Aloha Pearl Harbor Elementary School Ohana, I would like to say MAHALO to everyone who supported and attended our Annual Fall Festival “Birthday Bash”this year. It was great to see our community come together to celebrate Pearl Harbor Elementary’s 60th Birthday. This event would not have been a huge success without the support of all of you! I’d like to specifically thank our families, Honolulu Police Department, military partners, community businesses and vendors, and our very own PHES faculty and staff. MAHALO for making this an enjoyable and memorable event for our keiki. Can you believe that our first semester is coming to a close? Amazing! I know your children as well as our teachers have been working hard to meet their standards and academic goals. Keep encouraging your children to excel and finish the semester strong! On Friday, November 18th, I had the opportunity to present certificates to select students to highlight their perfect attendance and academic excellence. Each student should be proud of their achievement as it was very well-deserved. I’m so happy to see our students excel and I know more students can and will join them in the upcoming quarters. I appreciate those parents who were able to be in attendance to celebrate your child’s hard work and dedication to their education. This past Wednesday, we had our Principal’s Munch and Mingle. We had the privilege of hearing from our Curriculum Coordinators as they gave an overview of our curriculum. We were also fortunate to have a representative from Achieve3000 here to share some insights to KidBiz and Smarty Ants. We appreciate those parents who attended, as the information shared further equipped them with resources to help their children at home. As we wind down to the last few weeks of the semester, there are a few events to mark in your calendars: •December 19, 2016 at 6:00pm - PHES Christmas Concert (Featuring: Band, Ukulele, and Chorus groups) •December 21, 2016 - PHES Christmas Program We hope all of you will be able to join us in celebrating the holiday season! Our last day of school before the holiday break is Wednesday, December 21, 2016. Please enjoy the winter break with family and friends. Rest up and rejuvenate for the start of a new year and a new semester. For those traveling, please be safe and enjoy your adventures. Make lots of memories with loved ones! I am grateful for all of you and your hard work. Pearl Harbor Elementary School continues to strive for excellence in all we do. We appreciate your efforts and dedication to our school community. We can accomplish anything together! I truly am proud to be the Principal here at PHES and am indeed blessed to get to work alongside each of you as we continue to provide learning opportunities for our keiki. PHES Vision Pearl Harbor Elementary School envisions our students to be respectful, responsible, lifelong learners.

Mission and Vision

PHES

Vice Principal’s Message Aloha Pearl Harbor Ohana,

I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with your family and friends! I’m thankful for the opportunity to work with a dedicated faculty and staff who always have the student’s best interest in mind. I’m also thankful for all of the parents and families because of the support you provide for your child and their teacher. I’ve been blessed to work at PHES for the last ten years and extremely thankful for each and every student I’ve had the privilege to work with over the years.

Winter break is right around the corner and the students are already starting to feel the excitement of the holidays. It’s understandable to be excited, but please encourage your child to stay focused in school and continue to monitor your child’s progress until our Winter break which begins on Thursday, December 22, 2016.

Please use the designated drop off and pick procedures which involves you driving on campus. The number one reason for having these procedures is safety. We want to ensure that all of our students are safely arriving and departing each and every day. The students should not be dropped off on the street outside of the campus. Please abide by the procedures that are designed to keep our students safe.

It was wonderful to see so many students and families enjoying the festivities during the Fall Fest last month. Thank you to our hard

working faculty and staff for the countless hours they dedicated to ensure a quality event. A special mahalo to the planning committee and our custodial staff!! The event marked the 60th anniversary of our school and it was fitting to celebrate it with some cake. Thank you for your participation and support of this community building event!

Please contact our office at (808) 421-4130 if you’re interested in working as an adult supervisor or crosswalk guard. We are looking for a few individuals to provide supervision to our children before, during and after school.

Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you in the near future!

Happy Holidays!!

ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 English Language Learners)

Annual Test Window: January 17 - February 28, 2017

All active ELLs students in grades kindergarten through twelfth grade will be taking the ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 English language proficiency test. This test is for students whose first or home language is not English and measures your child’s ability to use the English language. The test specifically identifies how well your child is reading, writing, speaking, and listening in English. The four sub-parts of the test take approximately three hours on separate days during the regular school day.

Kindergarten students will be tested one-to-one. However, students in grades 1-6 will be taking the on-line version of the test for the first time this year. For the writing section, grades 1-3 will continue to use paper-and pencil. However, grades 4-6 will be completing the writing portion on the computer.

This test is very important and teachers and students have been working hard to achieve the best results. The results of this test will help teachers identify areas where support may be needed. The test also allows schools to monitor individual ELL student progress on an annual basis, a requirement of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Federal guideline require testing of all ELL students (e.g. Parent Refusal).

Please do not schedule appointments or pull out children during the testing window. Any questions or concerns, please contact Ms. Nakagawara (ELL Coordinator/Teacher) at 421-4130.

Bully Awareness Pearl Harbor Elementary School is committed to creating a safe environment for all students. We strive to continue to educate our students and staff in how to be a bully free school. All students are provided with character education lessons by their grade level counselor that focus

on bullying and what each of us can do to prevent it from happening at our school. We are also sending home an information sheet this month with some tips for parents on what you can do to help keep your child bully free. Together we can make sure our school provides a safe learning environment for our students to succeed.

Career Day Speakers PHES annual Career Day will be held on Friday March 31, 2017. We are looking for speakers to give presentations to our grade 3-6 students. If you are interested in sharing with our students or know someone who would be, please contact Mrs. Hangai.

Ruby Tuesday November Sharks of the Month

Kepueli Kindergarten, Ms. McCord

and

Isa Grade 3, Mrs. Kinoshita

This award is being presented to students demonstrating the attributes found in a personwith a growth mindset. In today’s society we often focus only on the end product rather than acknowledge the growth one makes. This award is an opportunity for all of us to celebrate the hard work and perseverance students have exhibited leading to their

academic gains. This award is not about how many MEs or MPs one has, but more about the fortitude and determination one displays on a daily basis because they want to

improve themselves.

Did you know??? Pearl Harbor Elementary School’s mascot is the shark. The shark is the "aumakua" or guardian spirit of Pearl Harbor. In an old Hawaiian legend, Pu'uloa is the name for Pearl Harbor. The area was once ruled by a chiefess called Ka'ahu. Ka'ahu lived beside a little stream that flowed into Pu'uloa. Often Ka'ahu and her brother went down to the harbor and swam for hours. A shark god liked to watch them. "They should be sharks and live in Pu'uloa”, thought the shark god and changed their form. Ka'ahu was changed into a shark along with her brother. The shark sister and her brother protect the waters of Pearl Harbor.

The Hawaiian Corner by Kumu Hūlali

/ December

At the beginning of the year, each grade is given a different Hawaiian Focus Concept/Value, which we take time to talk about and do group activities on to further our understanding about

them. I give the students examples of how these Concepts/Values were implemented in old Hawaii and ask them how they are important for us to practice or be mindful of in our day-to-

day lives and interactions.

Below are the 7 Hawaiian Concepts/Values, and the grades they’re assigned to. I do want to mention that like many Hawaiian words, each word below may have other meanings. The

definition given is the one we’ve used in class for this activity.

Using the pronunciation table above, try to pronounce the Hawaiian Concepts/Values on your own, and think of how they apply to your daily life.

It’s almost time for Winter Vacation!!! And in the spirit of the Holiday season upon us… Let’s practice this Hawaiian greeting.

Mele Kalikimaka a me Hau‘oli Makahiki Hou! (meh-leh kah-lee-kee-mah-kah) (ah) (meh) (how-oh-lee) (mah-kah-hee-kee-hoh-oo)

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone, and Aloha!
