“Thanks for volunteering for the Bangladesh project. I hear that you’re interested in epidemiology and want to learn about the tools and methods used to study disease outbreak. When assigned to a new outbreak like this one, we’ll look for patterns in the outbreak to try to piece together the puzzle about why the outbreak occurred. We’ll look for clues by assessing where the cases occur and who is getting sick. We gather data about patients including their gender, age, occupation, activities and what they ate prior to the illness. We also look for clues about the seasonality of the outbreaks. For example, many outbreaks occur near the Fourth of July because of warm, contaminated potato salad at picnics! I always try to think about where the illness came from and how it was transmitted to humans.Let’s get you caught up on the data we’ve already gathered and show you some of the methods we use along the way.”

Case Background:

This mystery disease has been studied since 2001, but we are still not sure what the disease is or how it is spread. I have prepared a summary of the available data for you to review. I’ll be asking you some questions to help you think about the data and to learn how an epidemiologist approaches problems like this one.
