Florence-Carlton High School Academic END RESULT Very Impressive by John C. McGee At the University of Montana 2,959 students made the fall semester 2009 Dean’s List. To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must be undergraduates, must earn a semester grade point average of 3.50 or higher and receive grades of A or B in at least 9 credits. No grades below a B are allowed. Ravalli County placed 174 students on the fall semester 2009 Dean’s List. The following list gives a breakdown of individual schools graduates. As your superintendent, I have been thinking of the many fine activities that have been taking place in our high school. Not only have our students excelled, but they succeed well beyond their high school years. No standardized test can define our school. However, the end results of our graduates can and do provide some very compelling ex-amples of the excellent education our students receive while at the Florence-Carlton School. The accomplishment of placing 47 former graduates on the fall 2009 Dean’s List for the University of Montana is a very strong example of educational excellence. I am very proud of these former graduates and congratulate them on a job well done.
The Missoula Lowe’s store was very kind by donating a new stove/range to the Florence School Lunchroom. The new one replaced the stove that only 2 burners worked and the oven door would not stay shut. Such a great donation. THANKS!

Thinking About Your Future Education?
Over the course of a school year, our students are offered the opportunity to compete in differ-ent academic competitions. Different grade lev-els are also asked to take different assessments throughout the year. Selected students partici-pate in two different math contests each year, of which our students have fared quite well, with several students earning top honors. Our Jun-iors take the Montana University System Writing Assessment, and last year we finished in the top quartile in the state. We send groups to the Sci-ence Olympiad, where we have again had top finishers. We sent a group to Billings for the recent Science Bowl for the third year in a row. We are creating a current events team for our first venture into a Current Events Bowl. Our ACT scores show that we have more students who meet the four benchmarks than does the state. The new MAP tests that we have also show how our students do on a national level, and we have a vast majority of our students scor-ing over proficiency, on par with the national average. And our CRT tests are coming up in March. Last year did see a drop, but we have worked hard to make gains this year. The academic competitions we are involved with are quite challenging. Our students enjoy par-ticipating, as I was fortunate enough to witness this past weekend. I was a last minute fill in to take our Science Bowl team to Billings. I had an excellent weekend with the students on our team. It was very interesting watching the different teams involved and seeing what it would take to make us even more competitive in these types of competitions. I was definitely a proud Falcon this weekend!

We are trying to start a bike education pro-gram in our PE classes. If you have an old bike laying around that you would like to donate, please do so. We appreciate your help. We will be collecting bicycles for the middle school and elementary. Middle School bikes are typically 26" mountain bikes. Bicycles I choose to rebuild for use in the elementary schools. First choice: High quality BMX frame 20" tires, 6&1/2" crank arms. Reinforced handle bar, hard plastic seat, with quick release. Coaster Brake. Second choice: Good quality "mountain bike" frame 20" tires 5&1/2" crank arms. Reinforced handle bar, hard plastic seat, with quick release. Coaster Brake. Rear hand brake ok in addition to coaster brake, I pull the front brake off the bike. These bikes are used on the playground or in the street near the school. They are not for long distance...proper fit is not required to introduce scan, signal and dodge skills. We just need to be close.......once you par-ticipate in the on-bike lessons you will un-derstand. Typically we: 1 patch or replace inner tubes 2 replace handle bar grips (no cookie cutters) 3 repair or replace saddle 4 grease bearings, lube chain. 5 adjust a few spokes.

The Florence 6th grade students were greeted to a surprise guest on Wednes-day, February 3rd. When they filed into the old gym they knew something was going on, but were not quite sure who would be coming to see them. They had many guesses as to who may join them in the old gym that morning such as President Obama, Britney Spears and Mrs. Backus. As the anticipation built, Brent Reser (U of M Asst Marketing Director) and Ty Palmer, a U of M receiver, for the past 4 seasons entered the gym to begin the presentation. Brent and Ty soon revealed that they were there that day to recognize 3 of our Florence 6th graders for reading excellence and good citizenship. Soon a fuzzy acrobat named Monte burst into the gym and a frenzy of excitement was punctuated by some cool dance moves and some gifts tossed out to the crowd. It was possible at this point that the students forgot about the Read-ing and Citizenship recognition during all of this fun. After Monte threw some foam balls and other items out to the kids Brent and Ty took the time to make a nice presentation to Rebecca Seegraber, Danika Greer and Jessica Dufresne to honor them for high academic achievements. It was very nice to have The University of Montana take time to visit Florence School and to recognize these students. Thank you for coming out to Florence.

Just a note to offer up a hearty THANK YOU to all students, parents and community members who planned and organized, helped decorate, donated desserts, bought tickets to the show, served, plated desserts, washed dishes, brewed coffee, loaned tables and dishes, procured donations and helped clean up after our 9th An-nual Le Cafe Chocolat on Saturday. Thanks so much as well to Mrs. Ogle and our performers, accompanists and emcees. I think anyone in atten-dance could see how much this means to our students to have an opportunity to share their talents to such a captive audience. We hope you enjoyed the special instrument performances, group performances, soloists and even some dance numbers!
If you have any pictures to share, please let us know. We also welcome comments and suggestions to improve future shows. As always, you're invited to our regular meeting on the first Monday of each month in the Choir room at 7:00 p.m. -- park and enter the school through the doors behind the new gym. Thanks again for your support.

Twenty students were honored at an Accelerated Reader Assembly on January 27th. Each student honored earned 50 points or more in Accelerated Reader. Mrs. Miller’s class earned a trophy for having the most students qualify. Six 3rd graders from Mrs. Miller’s class were honored. Here are some of their thoughts about the program.
I like the Accelerated Reading Program because I love to read. I enjoy taking quizzes on the books I read. When I get 100% on my test I feel awesome! I love to receive prizes and trophies for reading. That’s why I like to earn 50 points! Makenna Liles First, I love to read. If I read I can go anywhere! If I want to go to Paris I can. If I want to go to New York I can. You should try traveling through books! Isabel Sage: I enjoy the A.R. Program for one, I LOVE to read. Another thing is I really enjoy being tested. I also like winning the prizes, but I could live without getting those prizes. I also learn how to memorize things. That is why I enjoy the A.R. Program. Natalie Dulac I enjoy Accelerated Reading because it makes me smarter. Books give me facts about animals, dinosaurs, and reptiles. I like getting prizes and trophies. I think everybody should do Accelerated Reading! Ethan Post The Accelerated Reading Program is easy to me because I like to read and take quizzes. I also like the prizes. The type of books I like to read are mystery books because sometimes they are scary. Shannon Byrne I like to read and take quizzes and I like to learn true facts about animals. Make sure you read carefully. You can get a good prize like a stuffed animal or a trophy. My opinion is that every-one should do it. Brendon Hill
Accelerated Reading Assembly The Florence-Carlton School District will be holding a Trustee Election on May 4, 2010, in the New Gym , voting hours will be published in the next Falcon View. Two Board of Trustee positions are open, each for a three-year term. These positions are cur-rently held by Mr. Jim Shreve and Mr. Leo Hansen. Nomination Petitions to run for a Trustee position are available at the District Office. There has been some confusion in the past for voters who reside in Missoula County. These voters need to come to the New Gym to vote or complete an absentee ballot. Absentee ballots are available to all voters who will not be able to come to the New Gym on May 4th and vote in person. “Application for Absentee Ballot” forms are available at the District Office, at the Courthouse in Hamilton or Missoula, or can be mailed or faxed to you. Important dates to remember are: • March 25—Final date to file a nomination
petition with the election administrator. No candidate may appear on the ballot unless he/she meets this deadline. Nomi-nation Petitions are available at the District office. No person signing a petition may sign more nomination petitions than there are trustee positions open and they must be a registered voter in the district.
• April 4—Voter registration closes. A voter
must register by this deadline to vote in the school election. Voter registration cards are available at the District Office or at the County Election Offices in Hamilton and Missoula.
• May 3—Deadline for absentee requests.
Absentee ballots cannot be requested after 12:00 (noon).
• May 4—Election Day.
