Bronson is accepting home-sewn face masks. They will be used in appropriate areas to conserve the supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) for areas that require medical-grade equipment.

Home-sewn masks aren't a replacement for medical-grade PPE. They won't be used where proper PPE is required.

It is essential that nobody involved in the creation, distribution or delivery of homemade masks have any symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, cough, shortness of breath) or have recently been exposed to anyone experiencing these symptoms or who has been tested positive for COVID-19.

Mask Templates Bronson’s Patient & Family Advisory Counsel along with clinical staff members have collaborated on a mask template to best fit current needs. The hospital is currently in need of large adult and standard adult face masks. Masks made from other templates will also be accepted. When received, the maskswill be washed before being delivered to Bronson locations.

Materials • 100% cotton fabric outer layer; or muslin, pillow ticking or cotton/poly blend if breathable – White/ivory, unprinted material is best if available – Clean cotton bedsheets can be used as long as they are clean, unstained and breathable• Cloth for interior liner – Cotton diaper cloth, cotton sheets or same material as using for the outer layer• 64 inches of either 3/8” or 1/2” inch cotton twill tape• Sewing machine• Light colored thread• Printed mask pattern• Cutting device (scissors, rotary cutter with mat or Cricut/Silhouette craft cutting machines)

Donation Drop-Offs Bronson will be collecting the acceptable new/unused personal protective equipment, supplies and hand-sewn masks from businesses, organizations and community members at the following five locations Monday through Friday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.:

Centre St. • Battle Creek: Bronson Urology Specialists, 4441 Capital Avenue Southwest • Paw Paw: Bronson LakeView Outpatient Center, 451 Health Parkway • South Haven: Bronson Family Medicine, 930 Blue Star Highway

All donations must be dropped off in-person.

Keep In Mind 1. Masks must be able to hold up to commercial washing. 2. Masks must not be too heavy or hot on the wearer’s face. 3. Work in batches (cut many, then sew many). 4. Use teamwork with others if they are in your home. 5. Every mask matters. Thank you for your helping your community!

Instructions

Prep• Wash all fabric before cutting it out.

(All donated masks will be washed by the hospital before use, as well.)• Choose the large or medium pattern, located on the following pages, and print the pattern.

Print the pattern on card stock, or trace your printed piece onto cardboard for a more sturdy pattern.

• Cut multiple pieces of the fabric pattern by folding cloth into stacked layers. Suggestion: Cutting four layers is easily done with a rotary cutting wheel.

• Weigh the pattern down with heavy bits like lead weights, stones or knives.• If you have a Cricut or Silhouette cutting machine, the original designer has a file on her

website which you can download to your machine for the standard adult masks (they have labeled as size large).

• If using a printed fabric, be very careful to ensure that each layer is mirrored. Otherwise the print will be on the wrong side.

• Use two pieces for each layer. Careful cutting in layers of two or four helps the alignment for the next step.

Sewing• Stack the front faces of the fabric together.• Stitch the center seam of both pieces.• Flip the outer layer to right side out.• Slip the outer layer into the liner layer.• Open up the mask and put the outer edges of the entire mask together. Pinning helps.• Stitch around the entire mask at about 1/8”. Be sure to leave a 2” opening along the bottom

of the mask.• Turn your mask right side out the using handy opening along the bottom.• Poke the corners out with a pointy, but not sharp, object.• Tuck the raw edging of the opening. Now as you continue to sew around the entire mask,

you will neatly close the opening.• Evenly attach one 32” tie to the front of one side of the mask.• Repeat the same process for the other side.• You did it!• Take your finished mask to a safe donation drop off location, as listed above.
