HTT STAFF REPORT

NEW YORK — As the home tex-tiles industry gathers this week in New York for the spring edi-tion of market, it won’t be new colors, constructions or col-lections that will be the prime topic of conversation.

It will be all about paying more for less … and learning to live with it.

Remember the old saying about location, location, lo-cation? This week it’s price, price and price.

That pricing pressure is top of mind at market comes after a virtually unprecedent-ed period in which prices only

went in one direc-tion: down. At the same time, product quality was also going d o w n , b u t a s long a s they were in tandem nobody seemed to notice much.

But this is different: Prod-uct quality continues to de-teriorate, but now the cost of buying that product is on the rise.

And the big question this week is how far … and how much?

The reasons behind all of this are well-known. Cot-ton has nearly tripled in price

over this t i m e a

year ago and as the

mainstay of sheets and

towels, it is having a huge

impact on costs. Polyester , the

other main com-ponent of home

textiles products, is also escalat-ing as oil prices spike following the revolutions and turmoil in the Middle East.

The laws of supply and de-mand also are coming into play. An ever-more-hungry middle class in China is buy-ing consumer products, like

KEARNY, N.J. — Royale Linens will debut the For Your Home by Vicki Payne collection, fea-turing the inspiration of the de-signer and host and driving force of the nationally syndicated TV show “For Your Home.”

The launch will take place during the New York Home Fash-ions Market in March and will be shown in Royale’s showroom at 7 W. 34th St.

Frank Snow, Royale’s vp of merchandising, described Payne as “a cross between Bob Vila with the nuts and bolts and also a de-signer. She’s got a lot to bring to the table on that.” For the past 15

years, her “For Your Home” program has been PBS’s leading home and garden lifestyle show.

“Developing a design concept that is easy to understand and timeless,” said Payne, the author of nine books. “enhances the value and functionality of each room.”

NEW YORK — WestPoint Home generated solid top line growth during the recent year, although its margin narrowed.

Sales for the fiscal year ended Dec. 31 were $429 million, up 16.3% from 2009. Parent compa-ny Icahn Enterprises reported last week that mar-gin for the year fell 6.5% to $29 million.

Loss from continuing operations widened slight-ly to $42 million from $40 million in 2009.

Margin was particularly hard hit during the fourth quarter, dropping 44.4% to $5 million, which the company attributed to higher raw material costs, freight and goods shipped out of China.

Sales during the quarter jumped 17.1% to $123

million, primarily due to better volumes with exist-ing customers, the company said. Loss from con-tinuing operations broadened to $13 million from $8 million in the year-ago quarter. HTT

OPINIONTodaY

Forget about cotton prices and oil supplies and a billion Chinese people wanting new towels and all the geo-political ramifi cations and justifi cations of the world-wide economy and its myriad fi nancial subsets.

I have seen the future. And its name is Ga Ga.Not necessarily Lady Gaga. At least I hope not. The last thing we need is a world in

which people dress up in cold cuts, are spawned from giant eggs and wear home furnish-ings accessories on their heads. No thanks, that’s not what I had in mind.

But what Lady Gaga represents is yet another fundamental change in the sheet-and-towel-buying population of this country, and if this little industry of ours doesn’t fi gure out how to deal with that new demographic it will sell even fewer products and make even less

money than it does now … and that’s not called a future, it’s called a fi nale.

Just as the Baby Boomers represented a seminal change in the taste levels and purchasing habits of the consumer buying base and a gen-eration or two later the rules changed again with Generation X, the Ga Ga Gang — the group formerly known as Millenniums or Gen Y — is about to do it again.

Home textiles purchases skew older than apparel, so much of this new generation is not quite in the stage of their lives when they are making serious investments in their home furnishings. So, the indus-try still has a little time to get itself set in place for what’s to come.

But what is to come is going to be very different than what has come. This is a generation with amazing access to information and

pretty much zero tolerance for misinformation. It expects to get the correct take on things because if you don’t give it to them, they will go someplace else.

First off, they already have the answers and secondly, they have little if any loyalty to a brand, a store or a business. They will go with whoever gives them what they want.

So, they are not going to be fooled with infl ated, double-looped thread counts and poly-ester sold under the guise of microfi ber and brand names that have absolutely no bearing to the real world.

They are going to want a great price, but the ease of the purchasing process is going to be just as important. That’s what few people understand about Amazon: The prices are great, but they are not always the best out there. It’s the one-click buy that is the real appeal and when Amazon combined that with an annual fl at shipping charge, they really pulled away from the competition. It’s taken the rest of the online world two years to catch on to that and they are only now rolling out their own takes on the concept.

The GGG (Ga Ga Gang, get with the program here, will you?) is also all about individ-ualization. The Boomers wanted to be different but didn’t mind being the same as every other Boomer. Gen Xers didn’t much care either way.

But this new consumer wants something that is theirs and nobody else’s.That is going to represent an enormous challenge to an industry used to cranking out a

couple of thousand dozen of the same stuff and having a 6,000-mile pipeline to supply it.How it adapts its product offerings to accommodate customers who want a totally per-

sonalized product is going to have all sorts of impacts on product development, sourcing and distribution. How the ubiquitous bed-in-a-bag survives this onslaught remains to be seen. Nothing has been able to kill its place in the market so far, but the Ga Ga’s could be the ones.

Finally, there is the design of the product itself. Is this new generation going to want to go to bed in a room decorated like a Victorian bordello? I fear for the very future of dust ruffl es.

At market this week, we’ll start to see which companies get the Ga Gas and which ones just stumble around muttering “ga ga” under their breath. HTT

Ga-Ga’d

It was around market time in fall 2000. HTT had a big story: Discount Stores Now Stocking 250-Count Sheets.

It was a big, freaking deal. Luxury sheets at Kmart (Mar-tha was the fi rst out of the gate, natch), Target (perish the

thought Kmart would out-sophisticate the “upscale discount-er”) and, fi nally, Walmart (the fat kid who always arrived last

to the party). It was around market time in spring

2001. HTT had a big story: Sferra Intro-duces 1,020-Count Sheets.

It was a big freaking deal. Consider that at the time discounters started putting in 250-count sheets, luxury suppliers were doing a lot of business in 350-count. Sure, they were using much better yarns and much better fi nishing, but all the custom-er saw was a number on a label. So, some-thing over 1,000 threads? Wow!

It was around spring market 2002. HTThad a big story: 1,000-Count Sheets now

Available for a $99 Retail. It was a big freaking deal. At that time, Sferra’s 1,020 sheet

was tagged at $500. I called up the sales director for the supplier who had pulled

off this feat and asked him how the sheets felt. “Awful!” he said, “Like cardboard. But if a department store wants to do an end-cap promotion on a 1,000-count sheet for less than $100, we can do it.”

(You want a real laugh? All the afore-mentioned sheets were being sold open stock. Ah, history. It seems so … ancient.)

That’s how fast it all changed. And it’s changing again — just as fast.

For the foreseeable future, cotton will rarely travel into a product unaccompanied by poly, Tencel, Dacron, Ingeo or an-other alternative fi ber. At some point, I imagine the same bright minds who fi gured out how to spin yarns out of plant life and plastic bottles will be hard at work trying to do the same thing with nice, cheap dirt.

We are living in an infl ationary era where the new “fabric of our lives” looks to be microfi ber.

Ever since the thread-count wars exploded, suppliers and manufacturers have been searching for a path out of the insan-ity. Sferra ultimately launched a “Lose Count” marketing push to get out the message that thread counts had become mean-ingless. Mass market suppliers got behind solutions position-ing for their products.

Now that 220 looks to be the new 600, except to see thread count identifi cations drop into obscurity on sheet packaging.

We are about to come full circle. HTT

Editor’s Note: This is the fi rst in a series of occassional guest columns. Gene Manheim is a managing director at Herbert Mines Associates, a leading executive search fi rm spe-cializing in C-suite, senior-level and corporate board placement for retail, fashion, e-com-merce, hospitality and consumer product companies. The fi rm also conducts assignments for numerous private-equity and venture capital-backed companies. The fi rm’s clients in-clude Polo Ralph Lauren, Macy’s, Berkshire Blanket and Pier 1 Imports.

IN OU R R A PIDLY SHIF T ING R E TA IL world, the demand for experienced, high-ly successful executives has never been greater. But the search for talent remains a signifi cant challenge for companies that are looking for the best candidate to fi t their specs, especially since that candidate is often happy, well-paid and not looking.

So, the big question always surfaces: What is the best way to engage people who are not necessarily looking for a new opportunity?

Approaching this pool of highly attractive candidates is a different kind of dance. In-stead of calling people and immediately asking if they are interested in a particular op-portunity, we will say, “Are you interested in seeing if you are interested?”

The goal is to capture attention, to explain the exciting nature of the role and how it’s going to impact the whole company, and get them, as the dialogue progresses, to se-riously consider the opportunity.

You want to give candidates the room to think things through without feeling like they are being pressured. Often what’s most important to someone successfully embedded in

a company — the person we refer to as “happy, well-paid and not looking” — is whether the new opportunity is going to be compel-ling enough to get him or her to leave a good current position and company where they are successful and secure.

We counsel our clients not to move too fast when they fi rst meet someone, and to be cognizant of the fact that the candidates in the early going are exploring the opportunity, so it’s really a two-way di-alogue. For example, in a fi rst meeting it is not a good idea to start drilling a candidate about his or her resume and desire to join the company, when the candidate may not have made that decision yet.

We also tell clients to not be insulted if after the fi rst meeting the candidate doesn’t seem to be chomping at the bit for the posi-tion. We will explain that this is more like a “fi rst date.” The per-

son has a job, a family, a home a thousand miles away. This is a big step. So don’t extin-guish the possibility that this could be right simply because he/she is not yet as excited as you would like.

In addition, there is a new atmosphere in these post-recession times. Prospective can-didates used to get more excited when they heard about a new opportunity: “I’ll sell my house quickly, my spouse will fi nd a new job” was not an overly optimistic reaction.

Now they hesitate more. They are valuing the job they have more. They worry about the “last-in, fi rst-out” phenomenon — that they could move to a great job, but sudden-ly there could be a scaling back of the work force even at the senior levels, with the new person at greater risk. Plus they have more concerns about fi nding employment in the new city for a trailing spouse.

The housing market also has defi nitely thrown a wrench into the process. People im-mediately question whether they can relocate if they have a house to sell. The challeng-es include how long it will take to sell and whether they’ll take a fi nancial hit, which they can’t afford.

All of this means that our interaction with candidates has to be different today. We have to understand that the issues I mentioned — last-in, fi rst-out concerns; housing; trailing spouse — are creating more anxiety than they did fi ve years ago. This makes the more nuanced approach all the more relevant when contacting potential candidates. What we’re asking them to consider is more of a big event and potentially traumatic than it would have been pre-recession.

We try to be more sensitive to the candidate’s situation, to respect their concern. And we explain that we believe if they investigate the opportunity, they will fi nd it very com-pelling. Once a candidate is enthusiastic about pursuing the position, the issues and challenges are all open for discussion and can be successfully addressed if both parties want it to work. HTT

ATL ANTA — Trade show organiz-er Messe Frankfurt North America is teaming with online sourcing market-place MFG.com on a trio of shows that run in concert at the Jacob K. Ja-vits Center in New York.

The shows are Texworld USA, Home Textiles Sourcing Expo and In-ternational Apparel Sourcing Expo, which take place July 19 to 21.

“The idea of unifying the online and offline sourcing experience for both buyers and suppliers makes sense,”

said Tony Forcucci, global director of the textiles and apparel sourcing mar-ketplace at MFG.com.

David Audrain, president and ceo of Messe Frankfurt North America, said MFG.com will help exhibitors “extend the value they receive from our shows throughout the year.” He continued: “Adding MFG.com to our existing col-laborations with Stylesight, Lenzing and our other partners makes our shows in New York that much more valuable, must-attend events.” HTT

NEW YORK — Family-run fabric house Kravet Inc. was the winning bidder for century-old, fabric and trim house Brunschwig & Fils, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January.

After what family-run Brunschwig & Fils described as a “spirited bidding against Sovereign Partners,” Kravet won the auction. Pending bankruptcy court approval and closing on the sale, Kra-vet is expected to commence operating the Brunschwig & Fils business by the end of this month.

During the Chapter 11 transition, Kravet provided $4 million in post-bankruptcy financing to Brunschwig & Fils to ensure the company would be a fi nancially sound trading partner during the bankruptcy period.

W h i t e P l a i n s , N . Y . - b a s e d Brunschwig & Fils has for the past 111 years been run by the Peardon family,

providing interior design and decora-tor services, as well as upscale fabrics, wallcoverings, trims, lighting, furniture and accessories. Its iconic brand name “drew signifi cant interest from nation-al and international, fi nancial and stra-tegic potential bidders,” the company noted.

Brunschwig & Fils operates show-rooms in 21 cities and a design studio in the New York D&D Building. The company has international distribution in 24 countries.

Founded in 1918 by the Kravet fam-ily, Kravet has transformed itself over the years from a small family-run fab-ric house to a major home furnishings company. It is a fourth-generation fam-ily-run company, and one of the world’s largest privately held distributors of fab-rics and home furnishings with loca-tions worldwide. It also owns high-end brands Lee Jofa and GP&J Baker. HTT

The prints will be available in two to three months, accord-ing to Tripp Hornick, coo.

RICHMOND, VA. — Carpen-ter Co.’s consumer informa-t ion s i te , SleepBetter.org, announced Dr. Lisa Shives has joined the company’s multi-year campaign to educate America about the importance of sleep as its resident sleep authority.

She will provide medical insights, offer tips for improv-ing sleep health, conduct orig-inal research and help shape the development of Carpenter’s sleep solution products.

“Lisa Shives is just what the doctor ordered, so to speak,” said Dan Schecter, vice presi-dent of consumer products at Carpenter Co. and creator of SleepBetter.org.

“The SleepBetter product

development process has evolved to a point where it increasingly translates data from sleep studies into technology advanced bed-ding products,” he added. “This evolution created the need for an experienced physician as part of our team. Dr. Lisa is a leader in the burgeoning sleep medi-cine sub-specialty and has thou-sands of her own patients.”

Shives is one of only a few practitioners with a fellowship in Sleep Medicine in addition to board certification by both the American Board of Inter-nal Medicine and the American Board of Sleep Medicine.

She is the founder of North-shore Sleep Medicine in Chi-cago, which works with more

DUQUESNE, PA. — American Textile Company’s product introduc-tions for the New York Home Fashions Market this week were devel-oped using consumer research to incorporate consumer trends, shopping habits and product preferences.

The manufacturer focused on providing affordable solutions that address a variety of consumer needs in updating the basic bedding category. The changes include more stylish designs, new fabrica-tions and innovative packaging.

ATC has broadened the Aller-Ease Bed Bug line with new items and fabrications for a more comfortable and stylish sleeping environ-ment, while maintaining protection from bed bugs. Bed bug travel items have also been developed as travel continues to be a key area in the spread of infestations.

“Understanding the consumer, her shopping habits and what influences her purchasing decisions has become a major focus of our marketing strategy,” said Mette Odom, vp of marketing for American Textile Company. “Our products provide smart, simple solutions to make her life easier and provide a healthy sleeping envi-ronment for her and her family.” HTT

American Textile Company Takes

Consumer-centric Approach

MUMBAI, INDIA — Alok Indus-tries has set up an internal Tex-tile Technology Group to help it create new technologies.

Alok’s research looked at key decision-making factors a con-sumer considers when making a textiles purchase. The Textile

Technology Group (TTG) focuses on enhancing those aspects of the product, using Alok’s research and development facilities, labs, plant and machinery.

Arun Agarwaal, ceo of Alok, said that given current cotton prices, “We felt this investment

was necessary to provide added value in basic categories, like solid-color sheets and towels.”

One of the advances to emerge from TTG is Sheer Soft, a pro-prietary fi nish that makes fabric softer and gives bedding “a super-sheer feel.” HTT

Universal Home Fashions Focuses on Casual looks

BY JENNIFER WHITE-KARP

NEW YORK — Universal Home Fashions is keeping it casual.

The manufacturer is unveil-ing products for the New York Home Fashions Market, includ-ing 47 bedding programs, 29 window programs and 45 bath programs with an emphasis on informal looks.

The move mirrors a shift away from the luxury trend of seasons past. “‘Luxe’ is not dead; how-ever it’s certainly not as impor-tant as it once was,” said Chris Certosimo, president. “Our focus is going to be directed

toward the casual customer at smartly priced retails.”

Business has been strong for the privately owned $75 mil-lion company, said Certosimo, enabling Universal Home Fash-ions to acquire a third cut-and-sew facility this year. “Fortunately all of our facilities are in the Hangzhou region [of China] allowing for bet-ter control of the finished prod-uct,” he said. “We are currently selling to most major retailers on a direct basis or drop shipped out of our 100,000-square-foot ware-house in Deer Park, N.Y.”

Among the bedding collec-tions Universal will be show-

ing to retailers is Noah, which is a matte poly satin with a sheer metallic voile overlay, fi n-ished with horizontal earth tone embroidery in a wave pattern.

Leon is a window collec-tion created with double-lay-ered space-dyed chenille, and features satin metal grommets. Bath programs include Chris-tina, a slub faux-silk horizon-tally-pieced with large-scale flocked floral motif. Its high gloss debossed resin accesso-ries feature a decal motif and are made in its resin facility in Guangzhou, China. HTT

NEW YORK — Emmy award-winning television designer Christo-pher Lowell and home products global sourcing company Fayette-Renaissance have joined forces to create a new line of bedding and bath textiles.

Lowell is represented by global brand licensing agency Beanstalk, which secured the strategic brand-licensing agreement.

Set to hit the shelves of specialty retailer stores, online member-ship sites and TV shopping networks by this spring, the new prod-uct lineup will include fashion bath towels, bedding, sheets, throws, blankets, window treatments, decorative pillows and beach towels – all inspired by Lowell’s style.

“The combination of Christopher’s recognized and reputable brand with high quality manufacturer Fayette-Renaissance is a per-fect match,” said Dan Levin, managing director, Beanstalk Los Angeles. “We anticipate the resulting product line will be both a branding and retail success.”

As a result of the partnership with Christopher Lowell, the prod-uct line will feature “pre-coordinated luxury solutions that instill design confidence in men, women and couples,” the company noted. “Customers can expect high-quality items at a competitive price point with fool-proof color schemes.”

TORONTO — Auggie is introducing a line of 100% cotton mix-and-match bedding for kids. Sheets, duvets and decorative pillows in the new line include petite prints featuring kid-friendly desgns, like robots, but done in a styl-ized way to keep adults happy.

The company reports that its looks tracked so well with adults that a number of designs are now available as queen- size quilts. Aug-gie is an offshoot of Canadian design firm Augutina. HTT

New York – Bedding from Hallmart Collectibles for the New York Home Fashions Market will feature updated styles in embroidery, jacquard, chenille and large panel prints, according to Saf Ijaz. Hallmart is offering its largest number of introductions ever, including about 400 new styles of toss pillows, thanks to increased capacity at its Chinese facility.

NEW YORK — Home fashions house Ellery Homestyles is adding a regal touch to its product lineup this summer with the launch of its new King Charles matelassé collection.

The engineered design is produced in Portugal of 100% cot-ton and is stone-washed for a luxurious hand. Ellery described the collection as a “sophisticated design [that] is steeped in historic Charleston’s decorative arts culture blending European, Caribbean, British and Asian infl uences.”

Budd Goldman, ceo, said Ellery is working with Historic Charles-ton Foundation “to bring Charleston’s classic, decorative motifs and style to home fashion products that consumers can enjoy in their own homes.”

The collection includes a bedspread, coverlet, bed skirt, shams and pillows that come in eight colors -- white, ivory, sunshine, pow-der blue, provincial blue, fern, scarlet and birch. It will be available at retail this summer.

Said Richard Gaskalla, director of retail and licensing at His-toric Charleston Foundation: “Ellery’s stellar interpretation of the New King Charles Matelassé will enable Historic Charleston Foun-dation to raise more awareness for our mission of historic preserva-tion.” HTT

NEW YORK — A top Canadian home textiles company is set to make inroads into the U.S. market now that it has scored a license agreement with an iconic American brand.

Safdie International’s line of Warner Bros. cartoon character- and super hero-themed hooded fl eece throws will be shown at the New York Home Fashions Market this week.

The license agreement is a coup for the division of Safdie & Co. Inc., according to Mark Burke, U.S. national sales manager of Safdie International. “Everyone knows Batman,” he said.

“We’re not new to Canada,” said Burke, where Safdie sells its throws and fl eece sheet sets and Star Wars-licensed products, “but we’re new to introducing our licensed characters in the United States.”

The Warner Bros. fl eece throws will be made out of 300-gram coral fl eece with a high pile. With seven designs, including Bugs Bunny and Tweety-Bird, the oversize products double as a blanket and dress-up item for children. There are glovelike spaces for children to put their hands.

Burke said the product is aimed at box, department and specialty stores with a $19.99 to $24.99 retail price.

Comparisons to the Snuggie blanket, which is sold for under $15 at Wal-Mart and other stores, seem inevitable, but Burke said Safdie’s product is quite distinct. “This is a heavier weight, almost twice the pile height” as the Snuggie, he said.

If the Warner Bros. fl eece throws prove successful, Burke said there may be potential to apply the license to other Safdie products.

Safdie International also creates a juvenile product called Cuddly Creatures, pillows that turn into animals. HTT

NEW YORK — Sinomax, a man-ufacturer of memory foam mat-tresses, mattress toppers and pil-lows, is emphasizing the safety of its products being shown at the New York Home Fashions Mar-

ket this week. Its memory foam products,

such as the PureFoam collec-tion, have earned the CertiPUR-US seal of approval from an inde-pendent laboratory; this indicates the bedding products are free from harmful elements such as dioxins, lead or formaldehyde. The CertiPUR-US seal is being displayed on packaging.

“While other manufacturers have earned this designation, Sinomax is taking a step further to brand its collections as purity products,” said Steven Romero, vice president of marketing. In addition, he said, Sinomax uses soy-based polyols and activated

charcoal, ingredients that com-bine to deactivate odors.

Questions about the safety of memory foam products arise occasionally from retailers, said Romero. In October last year, Dr. Oz, the surgeon and televi-sion health guru, warned about dangerous fl ame-retardant chem-icals found in many household objects, including memory foam.

However that warning did not have an impact on Sinomax’s market share, Romero said, as its products do not contain the chemicals.

Collections with Sinomax’s PureFoam technology include the Balance PureFoam Line, with a 1.5 inch topper and con-tour pillow; the PureFoam Spring Line, with a 1.5 inch topper and spring pillow and Comfort Equa-tion 2.0, with a 2-inch topper. Opening retail prices range from $40 to $80 and mid-point-prices range from $99 to $159. Some

1.5 inch toppers retail for less than $70 for a queen size, Romero said.

Also being shown at mar-ket is a new washable mem-ory foam topper, an inno-vation that extends the life of the topper, as typically

memory foam can’t be washed and can pick up odors over time.

The ability to wash the top layer keeps it fresh and usable over a longer period, Romero said.

The Elegance Wash-able memory foam line features a box-quilted

removable pillow-top with a lin-ing of washable memory foam

over a core of clus-tered memory foam. Similarly there is a washable memory foam pillow with

a removable memory foam-lined cover. Prices range from $150 to $189.

In Sinomax’s Season’s Best line, a new pillow has a split personality for dual cli-mates. The Sherpa-Tencel pil-low offers cosy Sherpa fabric for added warmth on one side and airy Tencel fabric on the other. HTT

In addition to TENCEL®, Lenzing Group is a world leader in marketing and manufacturing the man-made cellulose fibers Lenzing Modal® and Lenzing Viscose®.

The enviable attributes of TENCEL® – soft feel, cool touch, easy care and moisture management – coupled with Lenzing’s dedication to sustainable manufacturing are propelling the brand to new heights and cementing its place in the home textile industry as an example of how to provide a great-performance fiber with all the right “green” attributes.

SUSTAINABILITY & ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Lenzing was environmentally responsible long before it became fashionable.

TENCEL® fiber is natural and biodegradable. Made from eucalyptus wood pulp, which is sustainable, the raw material is culled from responsibly managed forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Unlike cotton and hemp and other fibers touted as “organic,” no pesticides, herbicides, defoliants or fertilizers are used.

Beyond the forest floor, Lenzing continues to maintain a strong environmental policy throughout the closed loop lyocell manufacturing process of TENCEL®. Also to be noted, at its lakeside Austrian headquarters, where Lenzing Modal® is produced, the company recycles waste streams and recovers by-product. The company manages its water overflow temperature to within 2 degrees Celsius of the River Ager (which is fed by the lake) to lessen the impact on the surrounding ecosystem. In fact, by products of the manufacturing process provide energy for the plant. And, the remaining wood sugar xylos is converted into Xylitol sweetener for sugar-free candy.

AND THE WINNER IS…

Lenzing’s mission to be front and foremost of the sustainability issue has not gone unnoticed: the company has garnered awards and eco-certificates from around the world. Most notably: European Flower Award for setting new standards in the field of sustainability and eco-technologies; The European Award for the Environment for its low emissions production; Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certificate, which ensures that no-harmful substances in textiles; and IS0 9001 certificate for its quality management systems.

THE TENCEL BED

While constantly achieving excellence in the environmental arena, it is ultimately its fiber that defines the company. In any product where it is used – whether in basic bedding, shell fabrics, luxurious sheeting or top-of-bed products – the use of TENCEL® fiber has functionality, a purpose in the product.

The applications for TENCEL® are exceptionally versatile. In sheeting, it offers a smooth hand with moisture absorption, cooling properties and bacterial growth reduction. The fiber’s structure makes its 70 percent more absorbent than cotton in channeling moisture away from the body.

As a down-free alternative TENCEL® Fill offers increased insulating properties and has shown to reduce growth of dust mites without chemical additives.

In comparison to other “organic” fibers, TENCEL® attributes stand out: it is, of course, natural; it remains soft through repeated washings with no pilling; dyes penetrate it 100 percent to provide lasting color. In numerous documented studies the use of TENCEL® was shown to improve sleep among individuals who consider themselves as having sensitive skin.

TENCEL INNOVATION

Lenzing leads in fiber innovation in response to its customers’ needs and anticipates the market, producing the only cellulosic micro fiber available in TENCELmicro®. It has introduced specialty products such as TENCEL®C, the wellness and beauty fiber containing Chitosan, which has a skin cell-renewing effect.

Most of United Feather & Down’s successful bedding programs use TENCEL® for the fiber’s look and performance as well as its well-documented sustainability story. The Sleep for Success! program, endorsed by Dr. James Maas, uses TENCEL® as both fiber and fill to achieve a product that promotes a good night’s sleep. “The reason consumers like TENCEL® is for its moisture management and its skin sensitivity,” said Bob Hickman, Senior vice president of Sales and Marketing, United Feather & Down. “It has all the right esthetics: sheen and softness as well as durability and washability.”

At Portico Home + Spa, the use of TENCEL® is key to creating the luxurious feel to its GENIUS collection of sheeting. The blend of 60 percent TENCEL® MICRO / 40 percent organic cotton give the products a wonderful soft hand. “Consumers are so wrapped up in what thread count their sheets are that they don’t realize what is truly making their sheeting feel so amazing,” noted Megan Wiseman, brand director, Portico. “Our GENIUS collection is the solution for luxurious sheets that are softer on the skin and gentler on the earth. We chose TENCEL® for 3 reasons: for its sustainability, which is important to us; its luxuriously soft hand; and its breathability,” she said. The company has also developed a quilted robe of 45 percent organic cotton/45 percent TENCEL®/10 percent recycled polyester for hotel and spa properties with sustainable practices.

The luminosity and durability of TENCEL® helps to create a better performing product, according Steven Romero, Sinomax USA, which uses a 50 percent TENCEL®/ 50 percent cotton blend in a covering for its ComforZen pillows and mattress toppers. “TENCEL® provides great moisture management and ultimately dryer, cozier sleeping conditions both in summer and winter,” he said.

Lenzing is continuously working to enhance the performance of TENCEL® fiber itself and finding new applications to make the best use of its unique product attributes. And, Lenzing continues to solidify its role as a fiber innovator and environmental pacesetter; the industry is watching as it rolls out its 2011 expansion plans.

Encouraged by an improved sales pace in the back half of 2010, area rug suppliers are march-ing into the New Year with a bevy of fresh looks set to roll out at the various winter markets kick-ing off in January.

Suppliers said they are rapidly fi lling their appointment books for the markets, giving them cause to feel assured that buyers are returning to their showrooms to write orders and stock their shelves with new products in the coming months.

Whether traditional or modern, new looks are meeting somewhere in the middle with many nature-inspired palettes and organic design elements dominating the season’s trends.

“We are seeing big trends in tonal and textured looks,” explained Steven Peykar, principal, Saddle Brook, NJ-based Nourison. “So we have developed a number of new lines that utilize multiple textures, whether by using different yarns or different constructions like hand-made with cut-and-loop textures or others.”

Here is a sampling of some major rug suppliers’ latest product introductions for winter 2011. HTT

DALTON, GA. — After an almost s ix -year absence, Mohawk Industries’ Karastan Rugs is again participating in the High Point Market this spring.

The last time Karastan was part of the biannual market was October 2005. The com-pany said it is returning now to reconnect with the furni-ture and design community at this long-standing venue for the industry.

“Our updated product line is perfect for all furniture retailers and designers, and High Point is

the best show to see those cus-tomers,” said Tammy Foubert, product manager for Karastan Rugs. “We plan to enhance our existing relationships with our furniture and design accounts, and are excited about adding new accounts in specifi c mar-ket areas.”

Karastan’s showroom will be located in space C409 at the International Home Furnish-ings Center (IHFC).

The upcoming High Point Market is scheduled April 2 through 7. HTT

Karastan Makes High Point

Market Return PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. — Looking to speed up the rate of its drop shipments to its West Coast customers, upscale rug house Safavieh recently pur-chased a new warehouse in Fon-tana, Calif.

The company is calling the new 150,000-square-foot site, which has 35-foot high ceilings, a “strategic move” that brings Safa-vieh’s total warehousing space in North America to 1,000,000 square feet, including its other facilities in Easton, Pa.; a new distribution center in LaSalle, Ontario, to service company’s growing Canadian customer base; and its site here at head-quarters.

“Speed and efficiency will be greatly improved by splitting inventory in locations on the East and West coasts, which is particularly important for west-ern state retailers in all chan-nels,” said Arash Yaraghi, prin-cipal. “The move is particularly significant for smaller dealers west of the Mississippi, because these customers are as concerned about shipping costs as they are about speed of delivery. Our cus-tomers in western states will see their freight rates significantly reduced.”

Since 2008 when Safavieh implemented its state-of-the-art logistics program, the company said one of its main competitive

advantages has been the ability to ship product within three days.

“The new distribution centers in California and Canada will expand our warehouse stock lev-els to provide immediate deliv-ery on over 1,000 programmed designs, each in more than eight sizes and several color schemes,” Yaraghi noted.

In addition, he continued, the company’s sales momentum in Canada and the United States’ West Coast “has been building for years, and we are projecting increased growth in these mar-kets. The new warehouse and dis-tribution centers meet our needs while providing ample space for future growth.” HTT

textiles, at a faster and faster clip. In the meantime, facto-ries making textiles in China are shutting down or moving into more lucrative and sophis-ticated product categories.

Add in crop shortages, Pak-istani politics and a few other factors, and you have a perfect storm of pricing pressure.

And the answer across the board seems to be to offer less … for more.

Home Textiles Today editors surveyed a broad cross-section of executives in the industry on what all of this means and got an equally as broad array of pos-sible scenarios. All of it is spec-ulation — some of it educated, some more far-fetched — but it’s quite likely that some of the following things are going to happen.

The thread-count war is probably over. In an era when you could fi nd 800, even 1,000-count sheeting in just about every distribution channel, old standbys like 180s, 200s and even 250s became has-beens. Now when more threads mean more cotton, we are likely to see a return of lower thread-count sheets with the premium weaves becoming more exclu-sive again.

All-cotton sheets, the back-bone of the business for a gen-eration, will almost certainly lose market share to blended constructions. But while this is an obvious solution to sky-high cotton prices, it is not a pana-cea: Polyester is going through its own costing issues and the core all-cotton customer is not going to take to blends all that easily.

Top-of-the-bed products, such as comforters, spreads and duvets, will most likely go on a diet, losing a few inches here, a little sewing detail there. Fills will also be a little lighter, no doubt.

On the bath side, lighter and smaller towels will become a fact of bathroom life. Again, coming after an era when big-ger was better and towels ap-proached gargantuan sizes and weights, there is plenty of terry-ground to give up but eventual-ly the consumer is likely to no-tice they aren’t drying off quite as quickly as before.

Certain higher-cost con-

structions, be it wovens, com-plex prints or even specialized products like fiber-reactive prints, will become less preva-lent in the marketplace. Again, these types of products will re-cede to the better end of the market, where they once exclu-sively lived many years ago.

It won’t just be product con-struction and specifications that will be impacted. The very process of buying is like-ly to change. Retailers may end up deliberating less on making their buying decisions to lock in prices when they believe they are most advantageous. The days of endlessly waiting out suppliers for lower prices may be ending.

Quality control, which, de-pending on who you are talking to, may have been more win-dow dressing in the fi rst place than many are willing to admit, and could become less of an el-ement of the sourcing process. If there’s very little quality to check, it may not take much of an apparatus to do so.

Where products are actual-ly made could change. Not that this means wholesale return to domestic manufacturing, something that would require enormous capital investments for which there is little appe-tite. But some U.S.-based cut-and-sew renaissance is a possi-bility as is renewed interest in NAFTA-country manufacturing in places such as Mexico and the Caribbean. Cutting ship-ping costs and times is one way to control costs.

How many of these things will actually take place, when — and how long they will last — remains uncertain. The in-dustry has been through cri-sis — both real and imagined — before and seminal chang-es in a business this large and this fragmented on the supply side are rare. It’s only usually in hindsight that it becomes clear what actually happened.

But it’s fair to say that rare-ly has the American home tex-tiles industry had to face such a daunting array of challeng-es and one way or another, it’s going to mean a fundamen-tal change in the nature of the products the industry sells and the way it which it sells them. HTT

March 13, 2011

The collection debuts with four designs ranging from un-derstated formal to urban chic with clean lines and enhanced by product detail. There are two feminine beds and two mascu-line beds. The line also includes a core solid color sheet program constructed of 60% cotton, 40% Tencel.

“The colors in the designs are rich and fully saturated which

allow the consumer a wide lat-itude in selecting paint and ac-cents to personalize the room’s fi nal décor,” Payne said.

Marla Stuchel, Royale Linens’ director of design, said Payne’s focus on design and detail “an-swers the consumer’s desire for el-egant bedroom ensembles that are affordable and of high quality.”

National sales manager Mark Lipsey said Payne’s show has a strong following among edu-cated women, 25-50 years old with home values in excess of

$500,000. “This demographic classification is the same con-sumer group that better depart-ment stores focus the major part of their advertising efforts in reaching,” he said.

Payne will be in Royale Lin-ens’ showroom Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of market week.

Also during market, Royale Linens will be showing what Snow called “experimental sheets — construction blends we think will be important going forward.” HTT

development/marketing. “In today’s world, with 42%

of in-store sales being infl uenced by online activity, the infl uence of the Web cannot be ignored,” he said, noting that Gen X and Gen Y together now constitute a larger population group than the Boomers.

He added: “Today’s 7-year-old

has a smart phone — and taking mom and grandma down a differ-ent path [of communications].”

The younger-skewing de-signs employ popular imagery such as skulls, text boxes, sun-glasses, peace signs, hearts and surf boards.

“This is a very different sort of beach than we’ve ever done,” said Gretchen Dale, coo, Loftex.

Texter Dude and Tweetie Sweetie will be featured on a

new Loftex USA website along with Facebook and Twitter pages to connect with consumers. The site is scheduled to launch in February 2012.

“Texter and Tweetie will do the blog,” said Booth. “They’ll blog about a virtual tour of all the great resorts. When they get home, they’ll share their photos on Flikr. And they will do links for where people can buy their towels.” HTT

NEW YORK — Same-store sales were below plan dur-ing the fi rst week of March — a month whose com-parisons will be heavily impacted by Easter moving into April this year, according to the Johnson Red-book.

“The fi rst week of March was the small-est week in expected sales volume, and therefore unrepresentative, making it too early to determine the trend of the month as a whole,” said Catlin Levis, Redbook an-alyst.

Comps for the week ended March 5 rose 2.0%, with comps up 4.8% at department stores and just 0.7% at discounters.

Retailers saw better movement in apparel during the week, said Levis, with soft lines driving the busi-ness at department stores. HTT

A Later Easter Makes for Softer March Comps

WASHINGTON — Import cargo vol-ume at the nation’s major retail con-tainer ports is expected to be up 11% in March over the same month last year, said the monthly Global Port Tracker report released by the Na-tional Retail Federation and Hack-ett Associates.

“These numbers show solid in-creases over last year and are evi-dence that our nation’s economic recovery is continuing to build mo-mentum,” said Jonathan Gold, NRF vp for supply chain and customs policy. “Increases in imports are a clear sign that retailers expect sales to continue to climb in the next sev-eral months.”

U.S. ports followed by Glob-al Port Tracker handled 1.2 mil-lion TEU — or twenty-foot equiv-alent units — in January, the latest month for which actual numbers are available. That represented a 5% in-crease from December and up 12%

from January 2010. In addition, it was the 14th con-

secutive month reflecting a year-over-year improvement after De-cember 2009 broke a 28-month streak of year-over-year declines.

One TEU is one 20-foot cargo container or its equivalent.

February, traditionally the slow-est month of the year, was estimated at 1.12 million TEU, which trans-lates to a 12% increase over Febru-ary 2010. March is forecast at 1.19 million TEU, up 11% from a year ago; April at 1.24 million TEU, up 9%; May at 1.32 million TEU, up 5%; June at 1.39 million TEU, up 5%; and July at 1.45 million TEU, up 5%.

The first half of 2011 is fore-cast at 7.5 million TEU, a 9% gain from the fi rst half of 2010. For the full year, 2010 totaled 14.7 million TEU, a 16% increase from 2009. Last year’s percentages were high

because 2009’s 12.7 million TEU was the lowest level seen since 2003.

But the recent political turmoil in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and else-where is driving up oil prices and will likely increase shipping costs, warned Hackett Associates founder Ben Hackett.

“Oil supply is going down as a number of nations have dropped out of the production cycle,” he ex-plained. “Freight rates have been decreasing but that will not last long as fuel costs are factored in.”

Global Port Tracker, which is produced for NRF by the consult-ing firm Hackett Associates, cov-ers the U.S. ports of Long Angeles/Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle and Tacoma on the West Coast; New York/New Jersey, Hampton Roads, Charleston and Savannah on the East Coast; and Houston on the Gulf Coast.
