Week 3 14/05/18
From the Principal’s Desk
Welcome to week 3. WOW what a start to the term we have had. Already
this term we have fit in a Roxy Gallery Opening Night, a cross country and
Mother’s day.
Excursion to the Roxy Gallery—Wednesday this week!
This Wednesday 16th May we are planning to take the students to the
Roxy Gallery to enjoy the display once more. Parents are welcome to join
us at the Gallery if you would like.
The students will be transported by staff in private cars with Mrs
Crane, Mel, Rhonda and myself.
We will travel in at 2pm and return to school by 3pm in time for
normal home time collections and buses
There is no permission note included for this excursion and it is a whole
school excursion K-6, so importantly, if you do not wish your child to
attend please make arrangements to collect your child prior to 2pm on
Wednesday and you will need to notify the school.
If your child still requires a booster seat please contact the school so
that we can make arrangements.
If you would like to collect your child from Kyogle at the Gallery be-
fore we return to school please phone and arrange this.
We will be leaving the Gallery at 2.45pm sharp to return to school.
NAPLAN- Online
This week we begin NAPLAN for all year 3 and year 5 students. We are
completing most of these online this year. The only assessment not on
the computer will be writing for year 3. This will continue on paper.
Tuesday 15th May – Reading and Language Conventions
Wednesday 16th May- Numeracy
Thursday 17th May- Writing
We will be holding the assessment in the morning of each day. We will
make it as enjoyable and stress free as possible. It is a good idea to
talk with your child to see how they are feeling about NAPLAN and to
reassure them. A good breakfast and goodnight
sleep are also very helpful.
Simultaneous Storytime
On Wednesday 23rd May we will have three of our
COLOURSS schools visiting us to participate in a
‘Trading COLOURSS’ day. Afterlee, Rukenvale and
Collins Creek schools will come to Wiangaree to
participate in some combined athletic activities,
story time and other planned trading COLOURSS
activities. Transport, uniform and lunches as per
normal school day for Wiangaree students.

Why creativity is so important for whole
brain development.
“Parenting ideas” expert contributor, Dr Jenny Brockis,
explains why creativity is so important for whole brain
development and the 4 main ingredients for fostering
creativity. “Research tells us that those kids who con-
tinually access creative outlets are the more success-
ful students, because creativity is linked to whole
brain development. Brain wise, creativity is important
for the development of language, problem solving,
reasoning skills, understanding and learning.
Creativity is messy
Creativity is full of mistakes
Creativity is make-believe
Creativity is mucking in
Creative kids
Whether your child is six or sixteen, managing their creativity starts with sharing the value we
hold for the arts and new ideas. It’s about taking trips to an art gallery, a science show or museum.
It's about travelling to different places, trying different foods and learning about different cultures.
It's about reading and sharing books, and talking to our kids to encourage an ongoing sense of
wonder and curiosity about their world.”
Top tips for fostering creativity:
1. Give permission for freedom of expression.
It's not about you or what you think is the right way to
create something. Encourage your child to explore, and
create on their own terms while having fun.
2. Encourage play
Encourage active unstructured play that takes them away
from the TV, tablet or computer for a while.
3. Foster originality by being accepting of difference.
While some rules are important to keep our children safe,
being allowed to do things their way when developing
ideas, is what helps shape their individuality. - Extract from Parenting Ideas written by Michael Gross.

LUNCH BOX CHECK IN
Myth: Processed foods are bad
Firstly, I don't like to refer to any foods as "bad". Food fuels the body, but has a role in so many
other areas of our life - it provides enjoyment, it can be social, it is a way we show love. Referring
to food as good & bad can lead to emotions such as fear & guilt.
Processed foods have a role in our busy lives - salads
that are pre-chopped, frozen fruit / vegetables,
pasta sauces, canned fish / beans, bread & cereal / dairy
products have all had some form of processing, but all
make healthy eating easier. Processing can also help
retain nutrients & fortify products (eg with calcium or
folate) making them more nutrient dense.
That being said - some processed foods (such as chips,
chocolate, sweet biscuits & sugary drinks) are better left
out of the lunchbox & only eaten on special occasions.
A good rule of thumb is to look at the ingredients
list - choose processed foods that do not have fat, sugar
or salt in the top 5 ingredients.

Roxy Gallery
Last Wednesday we held our Roxy Gallery Opening Night. It was
wonderful to see so many of our families there to celebrate the
students work. It was such a wonderful evening and a real cele-
bration of the fantastic talents of your children. They really did
produce some quality pieces. If you haven’t had a chance to
take a look, don’t panic it is still on display until the 2nd of June.
Thank you to those parents who brought food to share and
help make our night successful.
District Cross Country
The Child Oral Health Service would like to remind parents and carers of
the importance of regular,
supervised oral hygiene. -When children start school they are often keen to be as independent as
possible. Most children don’t have the skills to brush their own teeth well
enough to prevent decay until age 8-10, depending on their level of
dexterity. -Thorough brushing twice per day prevents significantly more dental decay
than brushing once per day or less often. - Help your child gently brush their teeth and gums twice per day with a
small amount of fluoride toothpaste
District Cross Country
On Friday 4th
May we held our District Cross Country at The Risk Public School. It was a beautiful
sunny day and the students that attended had a wonderful time. Well done to all those students
who did attend and participate and ran their hardest. Special congratulations to Blythe for coming
3rd
in the 11yr Boys race. He will now progress to the Zone Cross Country held at Corndale PS on
Friday 1st June. We wish him all the best at the next level.
Next year our aim is to have 100% participation from our Wiangaree students.
