Greetings from the Dean

I am thrilled and excited to have joinedBrandon University as Dean of the School ofHealth Studies — a school that is known for itsexcellence in education and strong leadership. The theme for my first address is Transitions. I feel this theme is appropriate given therecognition we are offering in this newsletter tothe students who have successfully completedprogram requirements. Graduation is one of themost significant transitions in one’s life. Inreality, we face a lifetime of transitions. Somewe move through with ease, others we findmore difficult and stressful. William Bridges, a psychologist andpreeminent authority on managing change, describes transition as apsychological process that we go through in order to come to terms witha new situation. Each transition starts with an ending. This seemsparadoxical, but it is true. We must let go of the old situation, the oldidentity, and the old reality. This holds true for students entering theworkforce as graduates and for those of us starting a new position orchanging career paths. Bridges believes we then move into a “neutralzone” phase — the no-man’s land between the old reality and the new. Ifound myself in this neutral zone over the past few months as I anxiouslyawaited the start of this new phase in my career. By the time thisnewsletter is in press, I will have met all faculty and staff and received anextensive orientation to my role and new surroundings. Bridges calls thethird and final phase of transition a “new beginning”. It is this phase that Iam most looking forward to. This will involve getting to know manypeople who must also get to know me. It means listening and learning. Itmeans working with faculty and staff to establish a new strategic visionfor the School. It means forming partnerships with other agencies. Itmeans celebrating successes and modeling sound leadershipbehaviours. It means helping others deal with their own transitions thathave resulted from the arrival of the new Dean. It also means focusing onour students as our highest priority.

It is a dynamic and exciting time to be in health care and post-secondary education. I look forward with great anticipation to my “newbeginning” at Brandon University and the School of Health Studies.

Faculty members of the Department ofNursing, in collaboration with students, developed and implemented a PeerMentor Program in September 2007.Through this voluntary program, a peersupport network for Bachelor of Nursingstudents was created. Students in the thirdyear of the Bachelor of Nursing programfulfilled the role of mentors for thestudents in the second year of theprogram. Students interested inparticipating completed the formidentifying their common interests, agesand personal traits. Seventy-two studentswere paired and met at the initial MeetYour Mentor meeting. Group membersinteracted with ease and everyone enjoyedtheir social time together.

During the year, mentors have been

instrumental in maintaining contact withtheir mentees assisting them with specificcourse or clinical questions and acting assounding boards to minimize courserelated stress. In late November, Mentorsand Mentees met together to continue tostrengthen relationships and encouragesocialization and communication acrossthe different years of the program.

The Advisory Committee providesadvice and direction in the planning, implementation and evaluation of theBrandon University Bachelor of NursingProgram. For example, a current topic ofdiscussion is student clinical placements. This past year approximately 150 studentshave been involved in clinical nursingpractice, a key component of nursingeducation. Each student spendsapproximately 1640 hours in clinicalsettings during the Program. At theNovember meeting, Advisory Committeemembers provided ideas for individualstudent projects and suggestions for theYear 4 senior practicum placements. Thetopic of a computer booking system wasdiscussed and the experience of sendingand confirming requests for studentlearning was reviewed. This kind ofdialogue is important for the effective andorganized approach to planning forstudent clinical learning.

In 2004, members of the Departmentof Nursing under the direction of theDean of Health Studies began the work ofestablishing an Advisory Committee tothe Program. The terms of reference wereapproved by the School of Health StudiesFaculty Council in February 2005. This

Committee meets twice per year, andaddresses the requirements set forth in theCRNM Standards and Regulations forRegistered Nursing Education Programs. The Advisory Committee demonstrates tothe College of Registered Nurses ofManitoba that consultation has occurredwith the CRNM, relevant employers andother groups. The aim is to promote wideconsultation to meet current and futureneeds of the health care community.

Graduates of the Program are eligibleto write the Canadian Registered Nurses’examination. As new RNs, they are thenlicensed to practice nursing in theProvince of Manitoba or other provincesacross Canada. Brandon Universitymaintains several processes to ensure thequality of the Baccalaureate NursingProgram. As expected within theUniversity, the Program must meetstandards set by the Curriculum andAcademic Standards Committee of theSenate of Brandon University. All coursesand curriculum changes must beapproved by this Committee and bySenate. Because the graduates of theProgram practice as health careprofessionals, the Department is alsolegally responsible to the College ofRegistered Nurses of Manitoba and mustmeet the nursing education programstandards.

The Advisory Committee is composedof individuals from the CRNM,employers, alumni, current students, theDean of Health Studies, faculty members, and health care consumers. An alumnusof the Brandon site of the University ofManitoba Bachelor of Nursing program,Mr. Rick Paddock Thiessen, is serving asChairperson.
