Leonard played six seasons in the National Football League after a four-year college career that included stops at Mississippi, Troy, and Lees-McRae. A native of Toccoa, Ga., Leonard was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the 1992 NFL Draft, where he spent the first four years of his career. Leonard went on to play one season with the Minnesota Vikings and one with the Carolina Panthers before retiring in 2001. Leonard is now the CEO and founder of Wheeler Enterprises, Inc., a company which specializes in personal and executive coaching to facilitate growth and development meant to improve their clients’ quality of life. He is also an active member of the NFL Players Association, serving on the association’s financial committee and has also served as a member of the Board of Directors for the NFLPA.

Allison starred for the women’s soccer team as one of the first four-year athletes in the program’s history, leading the Bobcats to a 63-17-1 record and a trio of conference championships during the school’s transition to a four-year institution. A native of Hendersonville, Tenn., Allison garnered all-region and conference player of the year honors as a senior, while finishing her career ranked second in program history in total assists (36), third in match-winning goals (12), fourth in total points (108), and tied for seventh in total goals (36). Allison is now the Dean of Students at her Alma Mater.

Carla almost single-handedly redefined the sport of collegiate cycling, quickly becoming the most decorated rider in the history of the sport before passing away in a tragic training accident this past January in her native South Africa. During her career with the Bobcats, Carla collected 19 individual and team national titles, while becoming the first cyclist in collegiate history to win a national title in each of the four disciplines, accomplishing the feat during the 2008 season. In 2010, Carla finished 10th in the women’s race at the World Road Championship in Australia. She finished eighth, representing South Africa, at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, and also won the “Best Young Rider” award at the Tour de L’Aude stage race in France. She also signed with the HTC-Highroad’s professional team that same year.

HOMECOMING 2011

When President Barry M. Buxton arrived on the campus of Lees-McRae College in June 2010, he brought with him a 20-point revitalization strategy for the College. One of the goals outlined in the strategy is, “Build a distinct Lees-McRae College brand.”

The Communications and Marketing Committee, formed in the fall of 2010, has been working on developing a new marketing tagline for Lees-McRae College. Implementing a new tagline is the first step in building our brand. After six months of hard work, and lots of input from a variety of sources, the Communications and Marketing Committee pitched a new tagline to President Buxton. The President endorsed the tagline in July, as did the Alumni Board. Faculty and staff are on board, as well.

“Your Future Elevated” best describes who we are as an institution and what we promise to do once a student is enrolled. There are many secondary taglines that the College will use with this primary phrase such as, “Success Elevated,” “Learning Elevated,” “Adventure Elevated,” “Expectations Elevated,” and your Homecoming theme this year, “Good Times Elevated!”

As always, if you know of a high school student who would make a great Bobcat, please contact the Office of Admissions at (828) 898-8723. The prospective student’s application fee is waived if recommended to LMC by an alumnus, so start recruiting today!

Become a Class Agent! There has never been a better way to give back to your Alma Mater than to engage your classmates in the life of Lees-McRae College. A Class Agent reaches out to classmates and connects them back to LMC. A Class Agent helps find lost classmates, updates contact information, shares important class news with the College, and encourages classmates to make an annual gift to the Lees-McRae Fund. In addition, a Class Agent provides valuable input to the Office of Annual Giving and Alumni Relations on how to best communicate the message of the Lees-McRae Fund and other important announcements with alumni.

If you are interested in serving as a Class Agent for your class, please contact Michelle Vance Scott ’86/’90 at (828) 898-2489 or [email protected].
