1Welcome Home Alumni

welcomehome

On the heels of the Vice Presidential Debate, I encourage you to join us for Homecoming Weekend. In the pages that follow, you will find a schedule full of activities to ensure your time back on campus is a memorable one. This year promises to be unforgettable – we will dedicate an iconic symbol for our campus; celebrate the dedication of a new residence hall; honor distinguished alumni and outstanding athletes; cheer on our student-athletes; and delight in several musical performances throughout the weekend. Homecoming at Centre is also a special time to welcome backalumni who are celebrating reunions.

When you arrive on campus, please be sure to stop by the Chenault Alumni House to check-in and pick-up your 2012 Centre Debate commemorative gift.

As always, I look forward to seeing you,

Megan Haake Milby ’03Director of Alumni Affairs

4:30pm Lincoln Statue Dedication • Crounse HallPlease join us at the entrance of Crounse Hall for a dedication honoring the link betweenAbraham Lincoln and Centre College. The 12-foot sculpture serves as public art for thecampus community, embracing Kentucky’s “greatest son.” The Centre connection to President Lincoln traces back to his friendship with 1826 Centre alumnus John Todd Stuart, who served with Lincoln in the Black Hawk War, later provided Lincoln with his firstlaw books and eventually became Lincoln’s first law partner. The statue, created byLouisville artist Ed Hamilton, depicts a young Lincoln reading a law book given to him byStuart. At the base of the bronze statue, a Lincoln quotation to appears: “I will study andbe ready.”

The statue was unveiled Sunday, August 26, immediately following the College’s OpeningConvocation ceremony, which played host to noted Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer.

Crounse Hall is home to Grace Doherty Library and is located between Sutcliffe and Young halls.

Sociology professor Beau Weston got an NEH grant to develop a new course on “The HappySociety.” While studying happiness among both individuals and nations, he reached a surprising conclusion: Most people in the world are happy. Rich and poor, in rich countriesand poor countries. Of course some people are unhappy. Some are in misery, and suffering terribly. But people are good at solving problems. It is working. In large ways and small, the world is getting better. And we can be inspired to work for an even better world.
