At Homecoming this year, alumni can reach out and touch a piece of elon history – literally. The bell that hung in the tower of the Main Administration Building, which was destroyed in the 1923 fire, is on display in the Alamance Building rotunda.
The bell served as a beacon for elon’s earliest students, calling them to class and chapel from its perch atop the tower of “Old Main,” one of the first three buildings constructed on campus. But on the morning of January 18, 1923, wrote alumnus and historian Durward Turrentine Stokes, “the old college bell, making its last clank, plummeted down from the tower” as Old Main was engulfed in flame.
The bell survived its fall mostly intact. After it was plucked from the rubble, the bell was housed in various rooms and closets on campus. raymond Beck ’75 discovered references to the bell’s existence while researching another aspect of elon history and remembered seeing the relic in a closet in Carlton library. Along with Professor emeritus George Troxler and a metallurgist from N.C. State, Beck tracked down the bell and confirmed it as the one that hung in Old Main.
This summer, the bell became part of an exhibit in Alamance. It sits on a podium surrounded by plaques explaining its history as well as a metal cornerstone box that was placed when Old Main was built in 1889.
“It is a visible link to our past and a reminder of the rebirth of elon after the fire,” Troxler says.

the Senior OakAs men worked to clear a grove on the land upon which elon would be built in 1889, one tree managed to survive the axe. The tree stood near where West Dormitory is located today and “grew from the ground in a curve the height of a man before its trunk straight-ened out,” Stokes wrote. William S. long Jr., son of elon’s first president, encouraged his father to save the old white oak for its aesthetic value.
For decades, the tree, dubbed the Senior Oak, became an icon of elon, the go-to spot for photographs, friendly gatherings and marriage proposals. But in 1980, the tree was struck by lightning and the following year was cut down. The Senior Oak lives on as a collectors’ item; the felled tree was cut into more than 800 pieces and given to elon donors.

Library Moving DayPeople scoffed at President emeritus J. earl Danieley ’46 when he said he wanted to move all the books from Carlton library to the new Mcewen library in a day. But after all 67,000 volumes had been shelved in Mcewen by 5:05 p.m. on July 15, 1968, it was Danieley who got the last laugh. More than 200 students, faculty and community members took part in the move, plied by the promise of a steak dinner at the end of the day for any person who carried 10 loads of books. Dr. John G. Truitt (at right) brought a wheelbarrow to contribute to the effort – the same one he’d used to help move books into Carlton library when it opened in 1924. Stokes wrote, “There has never been a more cooperative occasion at elon College before or since.”

National Champions elon athletics made history in 1980–81 when it hosted the first national football championship held on North Carolina soil. On their home field at Williams High School in Burlington, the Fightin’ Christians won back-to-back NAIA Division I football champion-ships under head coach Jerry Tolley. In 1980, led by star running back Bobby Hedrick ’83, elon defeated Northeastern State, 17–10. The following year, the Fightin’ Christians rode the leg of kicker Phil renn ’84, whose 23-yard field goal on a bitterly cold day sealed elon’s 3–0 victory over Pittsburg State. The victories marked the first time in NAIA history a pri-vate school had won consecutive football championships.
