Although you want to buy your furniture beforeyou move in…WAIT…until you are actually livingin the space. Otherwise you might be extremely disappointed in your purchases. Most times whenthe furniture is delivered, it doesn’t fit through thedoor, or is too long or too bulky for the room.

What type of furniture to buy? Instead of a longsofa and chair, maybe the room would be betterwith a loveseat, an armchair, and a recliner. Keepin mind that you still need room for end tables, etc.– Consider a swivel-rocker-recliner to replace anarmchair. It positions easier in a reading corner orin an entertainment area. – A large armoire in asmall room is okay if you create balance with adark wall colour, large framed art and rich carpets.

What style of furniture to buy? Your sofa, chairs,headboards and draperies should last many years.Trendy-colour fabric will quickly make thesepieces look and feel outdated. Rather, choosecolours that are a shade lighter or darker than yourwall colour, so furnishings work well together andmaintain timeless.

You’ve always disliked your sofa? Then don’t continue to match accessories and paint colour to it.Have it reupholstered, or donate it, or simply get ridof it. If you don’t like it today, chances are youwon’t like it next month. – Save your accessorymoney and put it towards a piece of furniture youwill enjoy.

How many different woods can we put into oneroom? The rule is a simple one: do not introducemore than three different wood tones in a room;that goes for flooring, cabinetry, and furnishings.Otherwise you might want to re-stain some of thepieces to create a more consistent look.

What main paint colour is needed for open concepthomes? If your home has bright open spaces, selecta main paint colour that is slightly darker thanyou’d normally paint a smaller room. – The largerthe space you’re painting, the more tone depth yourwall colour needs to have.

What colour hue is needed? Lighter on the top,darker on the bottom. Floors are usually a darker,deeper hue than the walls: ceilings are lighter thanthe walls

Painting the garage door & front door? The garagedoor is not the first thing that people should seewhen they drive by, so paint it similar to the rest ofthe house to blend in, and paint the front door acomplementary colour so it stands out. You mightwant to add some different size flower pots paintedin the same colour/shade. It’ll make for a grandentrance without the expense.

What is your room’s focal point? While everyspace needs one focal point, most people never figure out what that actually is. In the living room,the focal point is either the T.V., the fireplace, orthe view from your window…whichever you enjoymost. In the bedroom, it’s the headboard; in thebathroom, it’s the vanity. If you don’t have a head-board, add some eye-catching artwork or tapestry,or consider painting the wall behind the bed a dramatic colour.

Where to place furniture? Instead of placing allyour furniture up against a wall, try dividing a longnarrow room by using the two-thirds/one-thirdrule: make two-thirds of your room the main seating area, and one-third a space for a desk, reading chair, or piano. Don’t be afraid to show theback of a chair or sofa. If possible to position thesofa as a room divider, place a sofa table behind itwith a reading lamp and some books to create acozy area...
