You shouldn’t need a heap of gold to be green. Here are five simple, cheap things you can do to make your home — and your life — a little greener.

Seems like all the green talk today is about buying things: buy Energy Star, buy solar panels, buy tankless water heaters, buy new sustainable building products. Buy, buy, buy.

What’s a budget-minded home owner to do? Follow these five easy, cheap green nuggets of advice, of course.

1. Resist the temptation to buy.

If you’ve read this far, you’re probably already on board the no-buy boat. This first piece of advice is simply to provide vali-dation (replacing something that isn’t broken isn’t green, and it’s not too budget-savvy either, and so on) and to encourage you to stay on board.

So give yourself a pat on the back every time you tell temp-tation to take a hike.

2. When you do need to buy, buy wisely.

Read product labels. You might need reading glasses to accomplish this, but it’s worth it.

Don’t try to figure out each in-gredient — it’s much too hard to do that. Besides, a great many product-makers don’t even bother to list every ingredient.

Instead, train your eye to spot terms such as non-toxic, biodegradable, and petroleum-free, all of which give you the all-clear signal to go ahead and buy.

That helpful tidbit comes from WebMd, as well as this one: Beware of products that list a few specific terms, and then use non-specific terms such as “inactive ingredients” for the rest. And be leery of any products that list “fragrance” without telling you what ingredients make up the fragrance.

Be careful, though — label-reading can be addictive. Before you know it, you’ll be perusing the National Library of Medi-cine’s Household Product Database.

3. Dust off your Crock-Pot.Yep, your Crock-Pot is an energy saver.

An electric oven at 350 degrees burns 2.0 kWh in just one hour. But a slow cooker at 200 degrees uses only 0.70 kWh over seven hours. And, besides, it’s nice to come home to delicious aromas and a meal that’s ready to eat.

4. Go crazy for power strips.

The most pragmatic way to save electricity is to turn off elec-tronics when you’re not using them. But seriously, who does that?

Smart strips, which sense when a device is idle and shut off its power supply, are a good compromise. And they’re not that pricey. You can get one for about $25, although there are some pricier models.

If you do make the effort to hook up your computer and media equipment to a smart strip, it will pay for itself eventually.

How long will that take?

Depends on how much of a bad dog you were pre-smart strip, and how religious you become about using the smart strip, which is a perfect segue to the final piece of advice:

5. Just use less.

Turn off your lights, turn down your heat, turn off the water when brushing your teeth. Obvious? Yes. But it’s really one of the simplest, easiest, cheapest things you can do to be green.

Ask yourself (and answer honestly): Are you really paying atten-tion to your electric and water consumption? Awareness is half the battle. Maybe you need an energy monitor to goose up your efforts.

Make yourself think about it day in and day out. That’s the hard part.

Bonus tip: How to be a better recycler.

Mostly we see rubber bands on our newspapers, holding our hair back, binding our produce, or else piled in a drawer somewhere, forgotten. But a lesson from MacGyver tells us a rubber band can be surprisingly helpful in a pinch.

We’ve collected some MacGyver-inspired ideas from the Internet.

What MacGyver did:Made a makeshift motor out of a battery pack, some rubber bands, and an electric whisk. Attached the “motor” to a food trolley (mak-ing it move on its own) to confuse a motion sensor.

What you can do:• Remove a stripped screw. Lay a flat

rubber band over the head of the screw, which will give the screwdriver a tighter fit.

• Pry open a stuck jar lid. Wrap a thick rubber band around the lid and twist it off.

• Secure wooden slats on a bed. Wrap a rubber band around each end to keep them from coming loose.

• Wipe excess paint off your paintbrush. Wrap rubber bands around a paint can across the opening. Wipe your brush against the rubber bands instead of the side of the can. Paint falls back inside, leaving the grooves around the can clean, saving you paint and the hassle of a stuck lid.

• Get more use out of an old broom. Tie rubber bands around the bristles to tighten them.

Rolling up the Colgate tube to squeeze out every last dollop before you buy another one is a simple, smart way to save money, but did you know that toothpaste also makes a good adhesive, deodorizer, and cleaner (for other things besides your teeth)?What you can do:

• Patch small holes in your walls. Use a putty knife or butter knife to smooth the toothpaste into the hole. Then sand the toothpaste to smooth the surface.

• Erase crayon marks from walls. Grab some non-gel tooth-

paste and a scrub brush, then just wipe until the marks are gone.

• Shine chrome. Smear non-gel toothpaste on the chrome surface, and use a soft, dry cloth to wipe it down. The fine abrasive in the paste polishes the chrome to a spotless shine.

• Deodorize a baby bottle. Apply toothpaste to your bottle brush to scrub out the stale milk smell. Then rinse it away.

Perhaps one of the most popular examples of MacGyver’s resourcefulness is his use of the paper clip. It’s

small, it’s simple, and it has evolved beyond its original purpose of binding papers together. Don’t underestimate its potential–it could help you out of a tricky home repair jam one day.

What MacGyver did:The question is: What didn’t he do when a pa-per clip was within reach? MacGyver hotwired cars, picked locks, disarmed missiles, and everything in between.

What you can do:

• Unclog spray bottles. Unbend the paper clip and use one end to clear tiny clogs in your perfume bottle, lotion pump, etc.• Pit cherries. Unfold a paper clip at its center, insert one hooked end into the top or bottom of the cherry. Once you feel the pit,

lift it up and out.• Reach tiny “reset” buttons inside electronics. Unfold and

use the end to poke away.• Temporarily replace a broken zipper. Untwist a small

paper clip and slip the end through the zipper hole, twist it back, and unzip.

• Pick a small lock on a jewelry box, screen door, or a basic center key bathroom door. Untwist a paper clip and slip the end inside the lock. Then jiggle it to open the locking mechanism.

Being pre-approved for a mortgage loan doesn’t mean you are borrowing the money or that you are obligated to. It just means the lender must stand behind his written commitment to fund the specified amount unless some-thing changes with your situation. Think about how attrac-tive your offer will be to the seller if you submit it with a letter pre-approving you for the loan.

Can the lender change his mind?

Some situations could cause a lender to withdraw from funding a loan even after a pre-approval letter is issued. If your credit situation changes between the time the pre-approval letter is issued and the loan’s funding, then the lender could change the interest rate or even deny the loan application. So, while you’re buying a house, it’s important not to apply for credit cards or other loans that could change your credit situation.Avoid surprises in your credit

The best way to check out what a lender is going to see in your credit history is to get a copy of your credit re-port. This document lists your financial history, including total debt and whether you pay your bills on time. Regu-larly checking your credit report is the best way to spot identity theft, credit report errors or other blemishes that

could affect your abil-ity to buy a home.

Experiencing a theft, flood, fire, or other casualty loss is devastating enough. Now imagine trying to list from memory for your insurance claim every single item that was damaged or destroyed. The task becomes less daunting if you create a home inventory in advance and keep it in a safe place.

Creating a home inventory can be done with pencil and paper alone, but a digital camera and camcorder make the job easier. Set aside enough time to review your in-surance policies, dig up receipts, document your posses-sions, and figure out where you’ll store your records. One day should be sufficient.

A home inventory is essential

From appliances, plates, and glasses to collectibles, rugs, and furniture, the average home is packed with an array of items collected over the years. And while you may be able to list many of them in a pinch, chances are you’d miss some important possessions if you ever needed to reconstruct your home’s contents from memo-ry, says Mark Goldwich, founder of GoldStar Adjusters, a Jacksonville, Fla., claims adjusting firm.

“Home inventories are a must no matter what the value of the home’s items are,” says Goldwich. “If you’re going to insure your property and pay for that insurance, you really should be able to document the ownership and the value of the items that you’re insuring. If you don’t have proof of the items you owned, it makes filing your claim much more difficult.”

Your job doesn’t end once you’ve compiled a home inventory, a detailed list of everything in your household. Be sure to compare estimated values to your policy’s coverage to ensure that you’ll be able to replace your belongings in case of damage or theft, says Goldwich, who is the author of “Uncovered: What Really Happens After the Storm, Flood, Earthquake or Fire.” In some cases, he says, you can purchase additional coverage if the value of your possessions exceeds the limits on your homeowners, flood, or other disaster policy.

Take photos and video of possessions

Jack Hungelmann, author of “Insurance for Dummies,” says a picture can be worth more than just a thousand words—it can add up to thousands in cash if you ever need to file an insurance claim. Hungelmann recom-mends using a digital camcorder or camera to take pictures of each room to document your belongings. “I recommend that people open up their cupboards and drawers. Be sure you have a record of all the things you own,” he says.

Goldwich says that creating such a home inventory might seem daunting, but digital video—you can pick up a decent camcorder for about $150—can make the task much easier.

Homeown-ers can literally walk from room to room and record narrative descriptions of items. You should note whether something is an antique, for example, or if it has other qualities that make it especially valuable such as the size of a television screen or the type of stones in a piece of jewelry. Get close-up shots of serial numbers on electronics, power tools, and the like.

Filling in a printed checklist with serial numbers, brands, quantities, and estimated values will prove indispensible if

an insurance claim ever needs to be filed. The adjuster will likely ask for such a list, and you can use the video or photos

as proof of ownership. Download our free home inventory checklist to create your own.

Keep your home inventory safe

Of course, such documentation is useless if it’s destroyed in a natural disaster, consumed by fire, or stolen along with your personal computer. Hungelmann says that us-ing digital media allows you to store the files on online backup services like Carbonite.com or iBackup.com in case your home is destroyed.

If you’d like to save the $10 or more per month these services typically cost, you could also save the files on

a USB drive that’s kept in a safe-deposit box, at a relative’s home, or in your emergency bag. The bag should include essentials your family needs in case you’re forced to flee on short notice.

It’s also a good idea to keep a file with receipts and any ap-praisals of valuable items you own. Store these documents off-site as well. Goldwich says that the more documentation you have to prove what you owned and what it was worth, the easier the claims process will be.
