Dear Parent and Students, Welcome to Homestead Senior High School! Home of the Broncos; where, “It’s a Matter of Pride.” The academy programs that will be offered during the 2010-2011 school year represent an exciting expansion of curricular options for our students. The academies that were developed meet the needs and interests of all students while offering a number of courses created on a continuum of academic difficulties. Students will select a four year course of study within one of the following eight academies:

• Academy of Hospitality & Tourism (Magnet)

• Academy of Aviation & Aerospace (Magnet)

• Academy of Health Sciences

• Academy of Education

• Academy of Architecture and Construction (Technology Education)

• Academy of Information Technology

• Academy of Law and Public Service

• Academy of Visual and Performing Arts Research has defined a framework of four basic motivational components that all students need in their schools: relevance of schoolwork, a caring and supportive human environment, opportunities for academic success, and support with personal challenges. Recent studies have examined and expanded upon the four basic motivational sources and described how academies can address each of the changes in school organization, curriculum, and instructional practices that Homestead Senior offer. This curriculum guide will provide information on academy selection, registration procedures, graduation requirements, and general school information. For additional information, please visit our school, Parent Resource Center, your child’s counselor, or visit our website at http://homesteadhigh.dadeschools.net. Best wishes for the 2010-2011 school year. Sincerely, Kerri Maysonet Principal Homestead Senior High School

READ THIS BULLETIN CAREFULLY. SHARE IT WITH YOUR PARENT/ GUARDIAN.

After you study the bulletin thoroughly, select courses within your interest and discuss your selections with your parent/guardian. You will have an opportunity to discuss your selections with your teachers and counselor in order to evaluate your choices in light of your performance, your aptitude, and your future plans. You will complete a subject selection sheet and your parent/guardian will be asked to sign it to indicate their approval of your choices. A parent/guardian signature on the subject selection sheet indicates parental approval.

Course Registration Procedures Fall registration is completed during the preceding spring, at which time all students meet with their counselor to select courses. The following is an outline of the registration procedure:

1. Articulation - Registration materials (Curriculum Bulletin, list of courses offered) are distributed and discussed.

2. Academic Advisement - Students will have the opportunity to discuss courses with his/her counselor, teachers and parent/guardian, based on performance, career goals, and graduation requirements.

3. Subject Selection Completion - Each student will sign and complete his/her subject selection sheet, and secure the appropriate teacher recommendation and parent/guardian signature. Each student will then return the sheet to his/her counselor by the announced date. Teacher recommendations for specific courses are based on the student's present performance and effort. However, if a parent/guardian disagrees with the teacher's recommendation and wishes to enroll the child in a different course, he/she should: a. Speak with the child's counselor. b. Request a "curriculum override" letter. This letter indicates the parent/guardian’s wish

to enroll the student in a class for which the child was not recommended. c. Return the letter to the child's counselor. The school will then honor the

parent/guardian request. Honors Classes are available for the student who can benefit by participating in class work, which requires an understanding of advanced concepts and in-depth mastery of subject matter. All students have an opportunity to elect an honors course. Before making this selection, however, students should consider the requirements of the course and the profile of a student who is successful in an honors class. Bonus points may be earned for successful completion.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are designed for the high-ability student who is capable of handling college level work. These courses often necessitate the use of college level texts. Students enrolled in these courses prepare to take the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) Advanced Placement examinations in May. The School Board has assumed the cost of the exam for the May test administration. No decision has been made yet regarding funding for future years. Most colleges and universities grant college credits to students who score a 3, 4, or 5 on the Advanced Placement exams. Bonus points may be earned for successful completion.

Schedule Changes for the 2010-2011 school year should be completed by the end of June 2010. School personnel will be available during the summer to discuss individual situations relating to career/education changes. Schedule changes during the opening of school are based on the following criteria only: a) completion of a scheduled course during summer school; b) computer errors; and c) class leveling. AFTER JUNE 30, 2010, NO SCHEDULE CHANGES WILL BE GRANTED BASED ON A STUDENT’S CHANGE OF MIND.

The Bronco Academy is a school-within-a-school, utilizing interdisciplinary teams of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies teachers who share a specific area of the school building. Incoming freshmen are connected to a select team of caring academy staff who will use research-based instructional strategies to teach the curriculum, as well as address the students’ individual needs. Teachers work in a collaborative environment and are committed to the achievement of all students. The freshman course “Tools for Success” focuses on developing and honing personal and academic skills of the students entering ninth grade, while connecting them to their academic and career pathways that will define the next three years of high school. By focusing students on core academics, character building, and proper study habits, the academy prepares freshmen students for, not only the remainder of their high school career, but also for the challenges of becoming productive members of society.

AVID Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an instructional program that focuses on methodologies to help students prepare for and participate in a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum. Academy of Health Science Practical Nursing / First Responder The Practical Nursing Program at Homestead Senior High School was the first approved secondary program of its type in Florida, and is currently the only two-year high school nursing program in MDCPS. The graduates are eligible to take the examination to become Licensed Practical Nurses and begin an exciting career in health care. The Practical Nursing Program allows secondary students to receive specialized training while completing their high school requirements. It complements their academic achievements by offering honors credit for specific courses in the curriculum. In addition, it has received accreditation from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), and for the past six years has matched or exceeded the national passage rate on the Florida State Board of Nursing Licensing Exam. The First Responder is part of a team that provides pre-hospital emergency care and transportation to the injured and sick. This curriculum combines academics with hands-on skills and case presentations/scenarios in order to perform error free emergency skills. The Health Science Programs are excellent models for the School-To-Career initiatives leading to School Improvement. The major focus is Student Achievement through the promotion of high academic and behavioral standards. The classes are made up of smaller learning communities as the Florida State Board of Nursing governs two of the programs. The hospital facilities are our community partners, and allow our students the opportunity to apply their learning and critical thinking skills to make supervised workplace decisions. The curriculum focuses on higher achievement, promoting critical thinking, problem solving skills, communication, and cooperative learning. A percentage of the clinical grade is based on Curriculum Based Vocational Behaviors, which measures job related behaviors and personal qualities related to career preparation.

Academy of Education Early Childhood Education / Teacher Education The Academy of Education has two strands Early Childhood Education and Teacher Education. The Early Childhood program is designed to offer students the opportunity to earn a certificate in Early Childhood Education. Students who successfully complete this strand will receive 9 credits towards a junior college or opportunity for employment within the childcare industry. Students also are prepared for entrepreneurial prospects of owning their childcare facilities. Students who choose to pursue the Early Childhood Education will be able to create and manage developmentally appropriate, safe, healthy learning environments for children so that “every child will thrive”. The Teacher Education strand provides students with the opportunity to be actively involved in the teaching-learning process. Students who choose a career in Teacher Education act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussion and hands-on approaches to help students learn and apply concepts to subjects such as science, mathematics, or English; while preparing children for the world of work or college. The Academy of Education Prepares Students for the Future.

Academy of Architecture and Construction (Technology Education)

Building Construction Technology

The Building Construction strand is designed to prepare students for employment or advanced training in the building construction industry. The purpose of this strand is to develop the competencies essential to the building construction industry. These competencies include skills and knowledge related to safety practices, understanding all aspects of the industry, the use of hand and power tools, employability skills, human relations and leadership skills and related construction theory.

Motorcycle Service also helps prepare individuals for employment in personal watercraft and all terrain vehicle (ATV) businesses.

Academy of Information Technology Cisco Networking / Game Simulation and Animation

The Academy of Information Technology operates as a small learning community, providing a program of study that introduces students to the broad career opportunities in today's digital workforce and equips them with the personal, analytical, technical and communication skills they need to thrive. By introducing high school students to the broad career opportunities of the IT industry, AOIT opens the door to new options, with which students are better able to make sound choices for the future. The Academy of Information Technology is affiliated with Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) providing students with leadership training and reinforcing specific career and technical skills. The Academy of Information Technology has three strands to choose from: Cisco Networking, Game Simulation, and New Media Technology. Each strand prepares students to pass professional certification exams such as the Cisco Certified Network Associate

(CCNA) professional exam or the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA A+)

professional exam. Also upon successful completion of the academy courses and satisfaction of entry requirements

for Miami Dade College the student will be eligible to receive a maximum of 12 college credits with Miami Dade College.

Academy of Law and Public Service Criminal Justice Law Studies This program is for students who are interested in pre-law, law enforcement, and the criminal justice system. Students gain a better understanding of the operations, policies and procedures within the three components of the criminal justice system, criminal investigations, the American legal system, and the role of our government. ROTC Students who choose a career in JROTC learn how the U.S. Air Force is organized, lead, and operated, while learning how to organize and influence teams in their own school environment. Students get opportunities to practice peer leadership, public speaking, delegation, and organization.

Academy of Visual and Performing Arts

The Visual and Performing Arts Academy is dedicated to the artistic development of the whole child. Students will explore, develop, and experience the arts in several areas such as: Acting/Drama, Dance, Music (Instrumental / band), TV Production, Photography, Ceramics, and Visual Arts. Students who excel and achieve at the higher levels will encounter a curriculum that will include professional productions and performances, District, State and National competitions, art exhibitions, parades and resumé/portfolio work, just to name a few. The Visual and Performing Arts Academy teaching and training is geared toward the serious student who wishes to pursue the arts in either college or move on to a professional career.
