MAINSTREETSHELBYVI LLE

The town of Shelbyville stretches far enough in the rural outskirts that actual boundaries are sometimes blurred. It makes for a perfect combination of what a community can offer.

And i t stands to r eason. Shelbyvi l le has been around so long, ever y corner is r ich w ith histor y. But as times continue to change and new always appears better, how does a community keep hold of the tr adi tions that make i t special?

This is the goal of Mainstr eet

Shelbyvi l le. The group is made up of people born and raised here, through generations of seeing incredible bi ts of culture come and go. And so, they str ive to r einvigorate the spir i t that is Shelbyvi l le, Indiana.

This is the group responsible for the Fir st Fr iday events that has done an incredible job giving the ci ty a r eason to get together each month. I t is also the foundation dir ectly r esponsible for getting and keeping some of the now tr ademark businesses in dow ntow n Shelbyvi l le!

Dr ive by the cir cle and notice a gather ing of people having a good time; odds are Mainstr eet Shelbyvi l le has something to do w ith i t.

Need to know something about an upcoming event in tow n? Mainstr eet Shelbyvi l le has the answer for you.

Don't just take my word for i t. Visi t mainstr eetshelbyvi l le.org and look at al l the information packed into one page! From business dir ector ies of ever y company in the histor ic distr ict, to ever y event taking place in dow ntow n Shelbyvi l le, i t 's obvious to see that home really is where their hear t is.

But the histor ic distr ict is a r elatively small section of a disperse community. At f i r st glance, you may wonder i f the greater whole is being left out to preser ve a few str eets. The new ly r evi tal ized Farmers Market tel ls the r eal tale.

Page 5: Hometown Living - Shelbyville - September 2015

5

Mainstr eet Shelbyvi l le found an intui tive way to use a famous piece of tow n land to aid and suppor t our other biggest past time: agr iculture.

You'l l f ind farmer and customer al ike pi led into the cir cle w ith smi l ing faces abound. As much as i t ser ves the economy, the Farmers Market also preser ves the r ich r ural histor y embedded in Shelbyvi l le.

The next Fir st Fr iday event of note is actually for the month of October. This month, as many alr eady know, is know n for a cer tain festival in Germany. Well thanks to Mainstr eet Shelbyvi l le, we can have our ow n Beer fest r ight in the hear t of tow n! For an extr emely marginal fee, you can tour the histor ic distr ict of Shelbyvi l le l ike you've never seen i t before. Brewers and vendors from al l over w i l l be l ining the str eets and offer ing a chance to taste the beer they have to offer.

But Mainstr eet Shelbyvi l le does so much more for the community than put on fun events. They know what the economy is l ike, especial ly in a market set in histor y such as ours. The sad fact is, not ever y business can stay af loat on i ts ow n. And when one goes, our whole tow n drops w ith i t.

Because of this, Mainstr eet Shelbyvi l le does ever ything in i ts power to help preser ve the businesses that cal l this tow n Home. From grant peti tions to clever consultation aid, the foundation has been l inked to the success of us al l .

Visi t the histor ic business bui ldings, enter the festivi ties, enjoy the venues. I f something in the hear t of tow n makes you smile, odds are Mainstr eet Shelbyvi l le helped make i t possible.

Travel along Washington Street just East of the cir cle, and you'r e bound to sense something sweet in the air.

That del ightful decadence is credi ted to Shelbyvi l le's new royalty in the wor ld of desser ts. From their ever popular cupcakes to their custom designed cakes, i t 's hard to f ind a person in tow n not absolutely in love w ith Sugar Coated Caker y.

It 's been four years since Sugar Coated off icial ly opened i t 's doors in September of 2011. Li ttle was know n of the family-ow ned tr eat shop at the time, least of al l what success i t would r each! But know ing what al l ow ners Mitch and Nickole Mitchell went through to make their dream a r eali ty, nobody should have ever doubted.

Over a year before Sugar Coated opened i ts doors, Mitch and Nickole had a long discussion.

"We realized there was a r eal oppor tuni ty to give Shelbyvi l le something i t didn't have," Mitch said. "Nickole always had a talent and passion for baking, so we decided to go for i t."

With a pr ime location avai lable in the histor ic distr ict of dow ntow n Shelbyvi l le, the timing fel l r ight into place. From there, i t took about a year to r emodel the bui lding and get i t r eady for business.

Like many new businesses, Sugar Coated fought to r ise to the top in i ts f i r st days.

"We really tr ied to f ind our identi ty that f i r st year. Even people who had heard of us didn't know exactly what we had to offer," Mitch explained.

Josie McLaughlin was a par t of the team from day one, helping the young Sugar Coated f ind i ts identi ty. A cul inar y student and daughter of one of the men

" We pr ide our selves on

being able to custom ize

cakes i n any way the

Page 16: Hometown Living - Shelbyville - September 2015

16

helping r emodel the bui lding, the hir ing of Josie was another instance that felt l ike fate for the new ow ners of Sugar Coated.

Expansion of the company f i r st began in the form of a second cake decorator. A year under their belt and reputation on the r ise, Sugar Coated Caker y had begun taking in more orders than Nickole and Josie could possibly f i l l w i th only twenty-four hours in a day.

Although i t 's a good problem to have, Mitch knew another hir e would need to be brought on for Sugar Coated to r eal ly f lour ish.

The hir ing was done when the Mitchell fami ly met Oksana Brow n, a cake decorator from Russia. The br i l l iantly ar tistic touch the new cake decorator works w ith is seen and celebrated to this day.

With the crew in place, Sugar Coated continued to take a far ther r each month after month.

"Word of mouth was the biggest r eason for success," Mitch said of the ear ly days. "I t wasn't necessar i ly about how many new customers we got, but about how many customers came back."

Travel into Sugar Coated's shop on

Washington Street, and you'l l see an ar ray of tr eats. Cupcakes and cookies of ever y f lavor imaginable l ine the glass cases of the left wall . The w indow display, however, tel ls another intr iguing stor y.

Wedding cakes are a staple of Sugar Coated Caker y. Being a par t of a couple's biggest day is something Mitch and Nickole cher ish.

"We pr ide ourselves on being able to customize the cakes any way the customer wants."

Sugar Coated is the only business around using fondant, a type of icing that can be formed into any shape. I t has only the l imitation of the decorator 's imagination. And at Sugar Coated, this opens the door to so many unique cakes.

Beyond standard word of mouth that comes w ith making tr uly del icious desser ts, social media can also be credi ted for helping Sugar Coated become a hi t. Ask anyone what their favor i te par t of Sugar Coated Caker y's business is, and the r esounding answer w i l l be the auction cakes.

Ever y day, Sugar Coated's Facebook page w i l l be l ined w ith multiple custom cakes that are l i teral ly auctioned to the highest bidder. The fun spor ting nature of

16

Page 17: Hometown Living - Shelbyville - September 2015

17

of the auction, along w ith the ar tistic design and great f lavor of each cake, makes the social media section of Sugar Coated an undeniable hi t.

Expansion has continued in Sugar Coated's wor ld. The ki tchen has been remodeled, and new products are implemented regular ly to stay ahead of the cur ve.

"It 's never about r eaching a cer tain stage. We just want to always be learning, and always getting better."

Sugar Coated is a proud member of Mainstr eet Shelbyvi l le. As the dow ntow n distr ict gains momentum, ever yone thr ives together.

Nobody knows what's next for Sugar Coated Caker y. The Mitchell fami ly is great at letting the oppor tuni ties present themselves. One thing is for cer tain, though. I f you want a cake customized to your del ights, or an assor tment of delectable cupcakes and cookies, you go to Sugar Coated Caker y.

NOTES FROM THE PUBLISHER

26

September has long since been considered back-to-school time of the year. Though school in our distr ict now star ts ear l ier, this is sti l l the month where the Fall semester is in ful l sw ing. Students are beginning to understand their assignments, teachers have found their routines, and school athletic seasons are under way.

Hometow n Living Magazine has always been an advocate for Shelbyvi l le helping Shelbyvi l le. And as always, the biggest for ce we can supply as a people for the community is to get out and about. The same goes for school athletics. People on the outside often don't know just how impor tant spectator s are to a spor t. Not just for moral suppor t, but f iscal suppor t as well .

Any spor ting event in the Shelbyvi l le system that charges admission is put into place to dir ectly aid the team. Training equipment, uni forms, even f i r st aid medical supplies are al l provided by a combination of booster club donations and admission r evenue. I f people don't attend the games, the programs w i l l fal l apar t. And from someone who works closely w ith some of these spor ts programs, I can tel l you they are impor tant to the future of our students. Lessons of leadership and dealing w ith tr ibulation, not to mention basic time management ski l ls; spor ts can help mold a student into a strong, functioning adult.

So come on out to a game or match this Fall . Tr y a spor t you don't know a lot about, you'l l see young people from our community pour ing their hear t and soul to achieving a goal. There are plenty of spor ts in the Shelbyvi l le school system that deser ve ever yone's suppor t. In r eturn they give al l they can; an incredibly enter taining game upon al l platforms.
