Revision GuideMass Number = Protons + Neutrons
Atomic/ proton number = Number of protons (also Number of electrons)
Protons have a positive charge (+)Neutrons have no chargeElectrons have a negative charge (-)
Atoms
Energy shells/ levels have maximum 2 electrons in the first shell and maximum 8 in the other shells. Beryllium has the electron configuration of 2,2 as atomic number 4 (= 4 electrons/ protons)
The number of electrons in the outer shell is linked to the group the element is in. Group 1 elements have 1 electron in the outer shell, group 6 electrons have 6 electrons in the outer shell

Metals - The more the electron shells the more reactive the element as there is less attraction between the negative electron and the positive nucleus (protons)
Group1 is more reactive than group 2, which is more reactive than the transition metals
Non-metals - Group 7 more reactive than Group 6. Group 8/0 – The Noble gases are unreactive as they have a full outer shell
Non- Metals - The more the electron shells the less reactive the element as there is less attraction between the positive nucleus (protons) and the electron that the non-metal is trying to receive from the metal
Less reactive
Revision Guide
Carbon*
Hydrogen*
* Non-metal. Metals below Carbon can be displaced from their compounds when reacted with Carbon. Hydrogen can be used for metals below this gas eg Copper. Metals above Carbon are extracted using electrolysis.
