Africa Renewal: To what extent do the SDGs relate to Africa’s vision as spelt out in Agenda 2063?Maged Abdelaziz: Based on our discussions with the African Group at the UN and the African Union, the two agendas are mutually supportive and coherent. There are some differences, but these do not in any way affect how the agendas are implemented by both organizations.
What are these differences?Agenda 2063 is much more specific on the targets to be achieved. In education, for instance, the SDGs talk about achieving universal primary and secondary education, while Africa’s Agenda 2063, in addition to targets on primary and secondary education, set a specific target of increase in tertiary education. Water security is another example. The SDGs call for a substantial increase, but Agenda 2063 calls for a specific increase. The same goes for other targets, including ICT..
