keep

out dust. A hot

engine and

exhaust

system

can ignite

or

melt

some materials. Do not

use sheet

plastic

as

a

dust cover. A non-porous

cover

will

trap moisture

around

the

engine,

promoting

rust

and corrosion.

Removal

from storage

1.

Check

your

mower

as described

in

the

pre-operation

checks section

of

this

manual

(refer

page

11).

2.

lf

the fuel was

drained during storage

preparation,

fill the tank with fresh

fuel. lf

you

keep

a container of fuel

for

refuelling, be

sure

it

contains only fresh fuel. Fuel oxidises

and

deteriorates

over

time,

causing hard

starting.

3.

lf

the

cylinder was coated with oil

during storage

preparation,

the

engine

will

smoke

briefly at

start-up.

This

is

normal.

Mulching

grass

Mulching

cuts

grass

clippings into fine

particles

that fall through the turf

and decompose

quickly.

This returns

nutrients to the

soil and reduces the need for raking,

bagging and disposal.

Honda mower decks that

are

designed for mulching

have a

plug or cover

plate

to

close the

discharge

opening

and re-circulate the

grass

clippings through

a

special mulching

plate.

A relatively

slow forward

speed will help to assure thorough mulching,

especially

in

thick

grass.

Mulching

requires more

attention to operation

and

maintenance

than other kinds

of mowing. lt's very important

that the

grass

clippings

get

cut into fine

particles

and are distributed

on

the lawn

without clumping.

o

Always

wait for wet

grass

to

dry before mulching.

o

Mulch with the throttle

lever

in

the fast

position.

.

Keep

the inside of the mower

deck clean.

.

Keep the blade

sharp.

Mulching

Ieaves

lf

you

want to mulch

fallen leaves into

your

lawn, don't let them

get

too

deep before

you

begin. For best results,

start mulching while

grass

still shows

through the leaf

cover.

For

best

mulching

results, mow the lawn

frequently, cutting off less

than one inch

of

grass

each

time.

ln

growing

season,

you

will

probably

need

to

mow the

lawn

twice

a

week.

A counter-clockwise

mowing

pattern

is

the most

efficient for mulching.

This

is

due to

mower

deck design

and blade rotational direction. lf

your

lawn has

an irregular'shape,

or many

obstacles, divide it into

sections

where

you

can use counter-clockwise

mowing

patterns.

Gatching grass

Catching should

be considered

where

you

want the area to be clear

of

lawn

clippings

such

as around swimming

pools.

A

grass

catcher works like the

bag

on

a

vacuum

cleaner.

The mowing

blade blows air

through ihe

catcher

which

traps the

grass

clippings.

Clogged

grass

catchers will not work well. Always

empty

grass

catchers before they

become

packed

full. Wash

dirty

grass

catchers

with

a

garden

hose,

and allow them to

dry completely before

use.

A

clockwise mowing

pattern

will

give

the best catching

performance,

leaving the least

amount of clippings

on

the

lawn.

This

is due

to

mower deck design and blade

rotational

direction.
