Hong Kong from the 1950s to the 1980s, there was a place where33 000 people densely resided. It was a lawless zone ruled bythe Triads, a district of prostitution, modern slavery, gamblingand drug abuse. It was known as the Kowloon Walled City.

In 1994, the government finally made the decision to demolish itcompletely. It was the time for people to put the Walled Cityin their memory, and the time for Hong Kong to turn a new page tobe a modern city towards the future.

Eccentric French graphic artist, cartoonist and photographer, Fred Boot, left his

digital designer life in Paris to continue his artistic journey in Hong Kong in 2007. 

The objective of his latest project—The New Walled City—is to present a myriad of

contemporary facets of Hong Kong in graphic documentary form, aiming to bring to

life a global portrait of a city facing many challenges. In it we can see drug

addiction, modern slavery, immigration control, freedom of speech, and

environmental challenges. A multimedia project consisting of photography, graphic

design, comics, collages and videos, Boot’s work provides a forum for the city’s

most humble revealing aspects on the other side of physical and mental walls.
