Workington is situated on the West coast of Cumbria at the mouth of the river Derwent and is steeped in history, with someparts of the town dating back to Roman times. In the 18th century, with the exploitation of the local iron ore and coal pits,that Workington expanded to become a major industrial town and port. Iron and steel manufacture have always been part of Workington's heritage, and it was here that the famous Henry Bessemer first introduced his revolutionary steel makingprocess. In recent years, with the decline of the steel industry and coal mining, the town has diversified into other forms of industry. Steel making finally ended in August 2006, despite being an efficient plant with a full order book. There arenumerous churches throughout the town, and the parish church of St Michael's has stood on its present site since the 7th century.
Workington is well served with amenities. A brand new shopping complex in the middle of the town has just recently opened,with all the well known high street retailers being part of the regeneration of Workington town centre. Workington Sportsand Leisure Centre has swimming pool, squash court, multi-sports courts, health suite, sunbeds and a gymnasium. The localGolf Club was established in 1893 and has good facilities, with the course taking in views of the western Lakeland mountainsand of the dramatic coastline.
