Letter from the President
Aloha EWI Members, “Life is a puzzle, and we are the pieces.” - Unknown Do you enjoy building puzzles? Taking pieces that don’t seem to go together; however, when you take the time to look, you see the connection. In our busy lives, we don’t take the time to look and make a connection with the people we meet. Sometimes, we need to slow down and be present in the moment. I feel like our EWI events allow us to be present and make connections.
Join us at our March EWI general meeting, where we will be finding pieces and making connections with a scavenger hunt of downtown. We will have teams of 3 -4 people, and we will provide clues for EWI businesses located downtown as well as interesting sites in the area. When you RSVP, please let Karynthya know your social media skills. Social media will play a role in the scavenger hunt, and we want each team to have experts and novices. After the hunt, we will enjoy dinner at The Mandalay, and enjoy more networking opportunities. What a great time to bring a guest to EWI. Thank you, Karen Yonemoto, the programs committee, and Natsunoya Tea House for a successful event. The food was outstanding. Thank you to our own, Brenda Kanno of Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii, and Cheryl Ohta, of Hawaii Candy Company, in sharing with us their expertise. Welcome to our newest member firm, Island Events, and their representative, Kirsten Brenner.
Please save the date for our 25th Annual Golf Tournament, which will be on Friday, August 28, 2020. Remind your companies to sign up to sponsor, donate, or play in the tournament.
Remember at EWI; our vision is: To enhance professional growth and development within a diverse group of professionals while empowering them to make a difference as they inspire others. With Gratitude, Roseann Freitas Better Business Bureau Northwest + Pacific President, EWI of Honolulu 2019 – 2020

Island Events creates amazing group experiences throughout the Hawaiian Islands. They comprehend the organization of tourist services based on knowledge of their destination and market of events, incentives, and motivation. Serving as the primary liaison between the client and local vendors, Kirsten assists the growth of Island Events as the Oahu Program Manager.
Kirsten moved to Hawaii to attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa to study Communications. This later sparked an interest in events and she began career shadowing with Kat Lin-Hurtubise at Gourmet Events Hawaii. Her career shadow-ing opportunity later transcribed to the head assistant, the lead stang coordina-tor and nally the event producer for corporate-local events on Oahu. Kirsten was eager to further her event knowledge and experience, later joining the Island Events team.
Kirsten aspires to expand her event production experience by working interna-tionally with another DMC team. DMC work is the perfect blend of event produc-tion and learning everything there is to know about your surroundings. DMC's provide a special experience for each client that they may not have the ability to create on their own. This allows Kirsten to show all of the memorable and breath-taking elements of her surroundings and provide a memory to last a lifetime.
In her spare time, Kirsten loves to be in the kitchen. Her passion began with her grandmother, because food is the "best way to bring people together. A recipe doesn't have love and soul until you add it in!". With an adventurous spirit and love of the outdoors, Kirsten enjoys the beauty of hiking trails on the weekends. Each year, her personal goal is cross a new country o her bucket list and experience as many world beauties as possible.
EWI stood out to Kirsten because of the supportive, like minded people who's common objective is to inspire fellow women to reach their personal and profes-sional goals. Kirsten has always favored being apart of community and promoting optimism and encouragement. She is excited to see what connections and relationships she can build with EWI and uplift women in Hawaii.

How “Tsujiura” Became Chinese Fortune Cookies
Cheryl Ohta, Fortune Cookie Writer, Treasurer and HR Manager, Hawaii Candy Inc.
February Meeting RecapNatsunoya Tea House was chosen because of last year’s very positive feedback, cost, and tie-in to the speaker from Hawaii Candy, makers of most fortune cookies in the State;upcoming Girl’s Day (Mar 3) and Chinese New Year! And a little bit of education from our in-house parliamentarian, Brenda Kanno on Robert’s Rules of Order.
We had a fabulous meeting with lots of positive energy and lots of networking. Our new guests not only learned about EWI from presenter, Adele Tasaka, but we all know a little more about Robert’s Rules to take back to our respective businesses for better meeting management. We also heard that Fortune Cookies originated in Japan. And some of us also learned how to make origami (paper) cranes!
