People travel from far and wideto bask on the beaches ofWaikiki, traverse the cool

Koolau rain forests and swim with thefishes at Hanauma Bay. So why do welocals opt to vacation elsewhere whenwe have all of these treasures in ourvery backyards?

Well, because a lot of the time wedon’t know such activities exist. Orwe’ve grown tired of the same oldhiking trails and surf spots.

Luckily, there are still new adven-tures waiting to be discovered each

and every day. Take, for example, kartracing.

“Everyone loves it, and the adren-aline rush you get going 0 to 45 (mph)in 3 seconds is unforgettable,” saysWarren Cole, co-owner of PodiumRaceway Hawaii.

Cole and wife Michele joinedforces with two other married couples(Neil and Kelly Tsutsui and Mark andSheree Jeffries) to open Hawaii’s firstand only indoor electric kart racingtrack earlier this year.

“When we first opened we hadthree-hour wait times on the week-ends, but now that has calmed

down,” Cole says. While the crowds have settled

down a bit, there’s no stopping the funto be had at this Kapolei attraction. Inaddition to arcade games and privateparty rooms, the 44,000-square-footvenue houses a quarter-mile indoortrack that is strictly designed to thrill.

“The track offers straightaways forthe speed junky and various types ofcorners for the technical aspects of rac-ing,” Cole says. And thanks to the race-way’s 35 high-performance Europeanelectric racing karts, as many as 12drivers can safely compete side-by-side in a race against the clock.

“Racing to get my best lap time isa ton of fun!” says Cole. “Racing isnot like golf where you have a goodday and a bad day; every time you getbetter and faster, and the adrenaline-pumping fun never ends.”

Annual trackpass racing licensecosts $5.95 and is valid for one yearfrom date of purchase. Adult racescost $20 for 14 laps ($25 withouttrackpass), and junior races for chil-dren at least 48 inches tall cost $15 fornine laps ($20 without trackpass).

Even when off the track Cole andthe rest of the Podium Raceway crewlove to try other heart-racing activities,

such as skydiving or taking an under-water shark tour. For fellow daredevils, one activity worth trying is wake-boarding.

“Wakeboarding is a cool sport andexciting to learn,” says CormacO’Carroll, owner of Hawaii WaterSports Center. Located right on thewaters of Koko Marina Center (7192Kalanianaole Hwy.), Hawaii WaterSports Center offers professionalinstruction in wakeboarding, alongwith other water activities such as jetskiing, parasailing, scuba diving,water-skiing, snorkeling, and Bumper

Maalaea.“We have unparalleled views of both the

North and South shores of Maui, as well asHaleakala,” Martois says. “At Flyin Hawaiian, you visit and see things most people never getto.”

The island of Hawaii — betterknown as the “Big Island” — isthe youngest and most dynamic

in the Hawaiian chain, with geographicfeatures ranging from lava-spewing vol-canoes to cattle ranches and botanicalgardens. Famous for its majestic land-marks, including Mauna Kea, MaunaLoa and the active Kilauea volcano, theBig Island offers kamaaina a multiplici-ty of activities to enjoy.

Adventure-seeking residents can optfor airborne pursuits such as helicopteror airplane tours, which have become aBig Island signature attraction becauseof Kilauea’s eruptions. During nightflights over the volcano conducted byIsland Air, for example, visitors get abird’s-eye view of the red-hot lava.Thrill-seekers also can embark onzipline tours that allow them to soar overunique terrain, all while being harnessedto a trolley that rides on a zip cable.

“Right now, our zipline tour has eightziplines and there’s one suspensionbridge,” says Haaheo Neves, sales man-ager for Big Island Eco Adventures

(BIEA). “The tour itself is about threehours. In about two months, we shouldfinish our Wikiwiki course, a one-hourtour that has four ziplines.”

Many options are available for thoseseeking on-land adventures such ashorseback riding, ATV (all terrain vehi-cle) tours, hunting for big game orHummer safari tours. Open-range horse-back riding at Ponoholo Ranch, an11,000-acre cattle ranch located on theKohala Mountains, is offered by severalcompanies, one of which is PanioloAdventures. ATV tours offer visitorsrides on all terrain vehicles specificallydesigned for off-road trails, includingrain forest and waterfall tours. HummerSafari tours also are popular, as visitorshave the opportunity to explore destina-tions such as the Kohala MountainRainforest. At Parker Ranch, visitors canshoot for a wide variety of game.

“Yearly, we have goat hunting, boarhunting and pig hunting,” says PattiJohnson, who helps coordinate the hunt-ing reservations at Parker Ranch. “FromNov. 1 to the weekend of Martin LutherKing Jr., that’s wild bird hunting; themonth of March is spring turkey hunting.”

Exploring the Big Island can continuebeneath the surface. The Big Island israted as one of the world’s top diving des-tinations, with places such as the Kailua-Kona and Kohala coastlines being populardiving spots. Kona Honu Divers, forexample, conducts night dives in locationswhere large manta rays are frequentlysighted. Swimming with dolphins — pos-sible through companies like DolphinDiscoveries — is another well-liked activ-ity. Other popular water activities includestand-up paddle surfing — standingupright on a board and navigating using alightweight paddle, rafting and kayaking.Parasailing is another popular activity, especially in the Kailua-Kona region, where the water is clear. Lava boat toursalso are a hot new island activity, as boatcompanies such as Lava OceanAdventures provide passengers withfront-row seats to lava waterfalls on theisland’s east side. Visitors can explore theKailua-Kona waters by submarine orglass bottom boat tours provided byAtlantis Adventures.

Of course, there’s always more to doon the Big Island. Just check out the fol-lowing activities.

BY ROCHELLE SMOLINSKI

Get away from the urban jungle andrediscover Hawaii in the lush, greenwilds of Kauai.

With its sheer, carved cliffs draped in manyshades of fertile green and valleys meanderingto the sea, the Garden Isle provides the perfectplayground for kamaaina — those seeking quietrelaxation or those who want to get out andexplore the island through action-packed activi-ties.

From the casual to the spontaneous, Kauaiwelcomes visitors to experience her beauty in avariety of mediums.

Get a bird’s-eye view, for example, of the dra-matic Na Pali cliffs and Hanalei Bay on an hour-long chartered flight narrating highlights overthe entire island. Or, let it all hang out in theexciting ultralight tours, which allow you tosoar in an open-air cockpit with the wind onyour face and your hands at the controls.

For those who love the water and land, paddle

up Kauai’s only navigable river by kayak and goashore for a hike to see hidden inland waterfalls,or hop a boat and kick back for an easy, leisure-ly ride up the river while snapping pictures ofverdant tropical foliage.

Kamaaina also can choose to play on theunforgettable Kiele Moana Nine of Marriott’sKauai Lagoon Golf Club golf course, whichboasts the longest stretch of back-to-back oceanholes anywhere in Hawaii. Pair the Moana Ninewith the Mauka Nine for a full 18-hole experi-ence of plush green fairways and endless blueocean.

Aerial enthusiasts can rip through Kauai’svalleys on the longest zipline on the islandbefore taking a refreshing dip in the cool, crisppools in one of the island’s hidden coves.

Lucas Williams, 31, an equipment managerand guide trainer at Outfitters Kauai, has beenshowing people “the ropes” since 2002. Azipliner from the age of 8, when his grandfatherbuilt a zipline over a pond in his home state ofOklahoma, Williams has since taken up a num-

ber of outdoor sports to keep him occu-pied. “Anything to keep my feet off theground.” Williams said.

His favorite zipline remains Nui LoaTrek’s tandem 1,800-foot line for itsspectacular 360-degree views of theentire Poipu crater. The distinctiveWaterZip line, which allows riders tohang from a bar and drop at their dis-cretion into a pool below, also is anexciting event with the Nui Loa Trekpackage.

“Our zipline tours are a build up tothe big stuff. You see the beautifulHawaiian scenery and the panoramicviews, then after all this you get ontothe water zipline. It’s just an epic day.” Williamssaid.

For newcomers to Outfitters Kauai’s uniqueziplines, Williams advice is simple: “Bring yourgood attitudes and a camera.”
