Message from the RabbiI would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to our annual journal dinner. Even though this is already the third dinner in our new Shul, it still never ceases to amaze me that we are actually celebrating our annual dinner in our own magnificent building. Just a few years ago we were on top of a bank with a maximum capacity on the busiest Shabbos of 180 people. In just a short period of time in our new edifice, we have had Shabbasos of over 450 people. It is absolutely incredible, and our appreciation first and foremost is to G-d for bringing us to this milestone.

However, Hashem also sent us some excellent messengers in the form of unbelievably dedicated lay leaders who worked tirelessly day and night to bring this project to fruition. One couple that stands out is our Guests of Honor this evening, Helen & Menno Ratzker. Their devotion and commitment to our Shul know no bounds. They are people who love to give, not for honor or personal aggrandizement, but because it’s a mitzvah and the right thing to do.

Their chesed and devotion to Shaare Zedek Hospital in Israel is legendary and is just a continued testimony to their gracious and generous hearts. In the merit of their generosity and self-sacrifice on behalf of the Jewish people, may the Al-mighty grant them and their entire family good health, happiness and much nachas as they continue to be involved with our Young Israel and other areas of the Jewish community.

Thank you all for coming and joining us this evening. Through your participation and involvement, you are helping to make our Young Israel and Jewish community “great again.”


Message from the Presidentועשו לי מקדש ושכנתי בתוכם

“They shall make a sanctuary for Me – so that I may dwell among them.” [Sh’mos 25:8]

That pasuk is written above our magnificent Aron Kodesh. It appears in the parsha we read yesterday, Terumah.

Coincidentally, Terumah is also the parsha I read upon my Bar Mitzvah 67 years ago. Tonight is the fourth of Adar, the date of my Hebrew birthday. Interesting how this all came together.

Generally, I have rarely addressed interpretations of Torah because it’s not my strength. In the case of Terumah, I would like to make an exception.

Terumah teaches us how all the utensils were to be constructed such as the Ark, Menorah, utensils etc. There were a total of four rings attached to the Ark. Through these rings, staves (poles) were placed so that the Ark could be carried on individuals’ shoulders. The staves, or poles, had to remain permanently in the rings!

Our “Mikdash Me-at” is also permanent but it is “carried” on a daily basis by a number of individuals numbering, at best, perhaps a minyan. They work, consult, shop, fix and maintain our edifice so that we can pray in a wonderful surrounding. We are equally thankful to many of you who “shoulder” the burden of keeping us financially healthy!

May we all work in a united way to grow our Young Israel Congregation to the level it deserves.

“So it was, whenever the ark set out, Moshe would say, Arise, O L-rd, may Your enemies be scattered and may those who hate You flee from You. And when it came to rest he would say, Repose O L-rd, among the myriads of thousands of Israel.” (Bamidbar 10: 35 & 36)

In the Torah, the above verses are enclosed before and after by an inverted letter nun, seemingly isolating and separating these verses. The Sifsei Kohen explains that this was due to the Jewish people’s sin. The Jewish people ran away from Sinai after receiving the Torah like a child, if not properly educated, might run away after school. Just like a child who is not properly educated might feel that school was dry, boring, and a burden, the Jewish people couldn’t wait to “get out” for a recess break!

Rabbi Hirsch here explains, however, that their leader Moshe, unlike everyone else, had the appropriate perspective. Moshe focused on the Ark. He focused on the Torah and not on the mere travel. Even on the road, Moshe was with the Torah. This is why before every journey Moshe began with a prayer that Hashem should protect the people. This is why when they stopped to camp, Moshe prayed that now and forever they should feel Hashem’s presence. Moshe was able to combine the constant with the new. To Moshe, the Torah was not just some dry, boring burden.Moshe viewed the Torah as constant, as exciting, as life. Even with The Jewish people’s nonstop complaining, Moshe continued to lead them faithfully and was occupied with their needs.

So, too, our leader and President Menno (Moshe) Ratzker and his wife Helen continue to lead our congregation even with all the complaints,


headaches, and challenges they deal with each and every day. Helen and Menno truly exemplify the theme of tonight: “And all those who occupy themselves in faithfulness with the needs of the congregation…” Our congregation is so blessed to have them leading us!

One of the main goals of our Youth Program is to make sure that every child is excited to come to our Young Israel. That each time they attend, they have a positive experience and are eager and thrilled to attend again. We want our children to be proud, ecstatic and overjoyed to be a part of our Young Israel! We want them to be thrilled about a Torah-observant life. We want them to feel it is fresh and new and something so essential, valuable and part of their life.

Message from the Dinner ChairAs Chairman of the Young Israel of Bal Harbour’s 2018 Annual Dinner, I would first like to thank all of you who supported this year’s efforts and made this the most successful fundraising campaign in our shul’s history. I would also like to thank all those who volunteered their time and skills to help put together this wonderful event. I especially want to thank Mali & Steve Schwartz, who spent countless hours coordinating the fundraising and the logistics of tonight’s event with stupendous results.

Our honorees, Helen & Menno Ratzker, were an invaluable part of this year’s success. Not only did they help with the planning of this evening’s Dinner, they also took upon themselves the task of fundraising in a truly incredible way, with a strong sense of purpose and perseverance that accrued a great benefit to our Community. Thank you, Helen & Menno, for all you have done and continue to do for our Community.

Having been involved with the Annual Dinner in one way or another for several years now, I have come to think of it as an appropriate time to thank the Almighty for the blessing of being a part of this Community and to celebrate all that we, collectively, have accomplished here. I think we are all incredibly fortunate to be a part of this growing community, with its magnificent building, its warm and diverse membership, its outstanding Rabbi, and its love and support of Torah. I think we should be proud of all that this Community has accomplished, from its humble beginnings in the Coronado Hotel less than 20 years ago, to the flourishing splendor we enjoy today. May we all continue our efforts to strengthen and grow together.

Please join me in thanking the Almighty with the blessing recorded in the Talmud, “Blessed are you Hashem…who has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this occasion.”

Helen and Menno RatzkerMenno was born in Amsterdam, Holland. He and his parents survived the Holocaust and came to America in 1947, moving into an apartment in Washington Heights. Helen, a native New Yorker, lived in the same building with her family. Helen and Menno both went to George Washington High School and, in the summers, worked at the same hotel in the Catskills. They got married in 1961.

Menno served in the U.S. Army, and Helen worked at the local TV station in “Dialing for Dollars.” Menno’s career in commodities trading included stints at Philipp Brothers (later Phibro, then

Phibro-Salomon) and Metallia, LLC, which he created with several partners.

In 1973, they moved to Monsey with their 3 sons, Paul, Michael and Jeff. Helen and Menno believed in community service, and were very active in Ashar (the local Hebrew Day School), with Helen serving as president of its Women’s Division. All 3 sons (and 2 future daughters-in- law) went to Ashar. Menno was President of Community Synagogue of Monsey, while Helen actively participated in its sisterhood. Menno also served as Vice Chairman of the Yeshiva University High Schools.

For more than 50 years they both have been very active for Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem – Menno was President of its American Committee and is currently Chairman. They saw the hospital go from 18 beds on Jaffa Road to 1,000 beds in Bayit Vegan.

They bought an apartment in Bal Harbour in 1999, at first only spending long weekends in Florida. They joined the Young Israel, then located on top of the bank on 96th Street. They both immediately became active in all its activities. Menno became Chairman of Development for the new building, and has served as president of our shul since January, 2016. It’s a position of greatsatisfaction mainly because of the wonderful people that make up its membership. They both love the area, the shul, and the warmth (inside and out).
